He's got such a beautiful head and he looks pretty big next to his mum, for his age! He won't grey, he's got zero hyperpigmentation and plenty of foal camouflage - test him and you'll see.

I know exactly how you were feeling. The visible signs of colic are so fast. My old horse who is at the other spectrum of the age scale at 27, had colic recently. The vet wasn’t optimistic but treated with a muscle relaxant, massive pain killer and I spent nearly five hours alone in the barn as twenty litres of fluid was pushed through him whilst distracting him with rubs and encouraging not to go down. The vet told me before he left to let him out after the drip had finished, which I did but spent the rest of the night checking on him. A round 4.30 am he asked to go in a new paddock and did a poo as he walked through the gate. The vet’s surgery rang early morning and were surprised that he was doing fine as the vet suspected a twist. Like you I was so worried and happily like Vali, Dan pulled through and is doing well on a new diet to add more roughage as his hay consumption has gone down. I hope Vali’s operation is a success and he has no need of another one. They are such big strong animals in so many ways but vulnerable and fragile when it comes to their internal make up.

Meg, I’ve been through colic so many times, with my different horses over the years, and it never gets less scary! In fact, my retired mare just colicked today. I’ve just been in hospital, and am on pain meds and shouldn’t drive, but the second I got the text from my barn manager that my beloved mare, Landra, was colicking, I took off like a bat out of hell to get to the barn. I got there just as the vet did. Thank the Lord it was just a mild impaction, and the good old nasogastric tube and stomach pump, then mineral oil pumped in helped the situation. But Landra has had a torsion colic when she was younger, which obviously required surgery. She’s 21 now, so I worry even more. I totally empathize with that panic and sense of helplessness. So sorry you had to go through that, but so glad Hobbit was on scene to catch it early, and that Vali got his surgery and is ok. I know you have to be SO relieved ❤
@yogurtboxerАй бұрын
So glad Vali is doing well ❤ So, so important to go with your gut. My Arab, Bart, was unwell. Vets did tell us based on scans they thought he had bone cancer in his jaw. There were some options and of course we didn't want him to suffer. But my gut was telling me to pursue it further. After other testing and a procedure, turns out it was a massive abcess and horrendous infection in the jaw that presented like cancer on testing. Thankfully, he healed up well and was never sick ever again. This was when he around 11 yrs old. He turned 33 in Feb 2024!!! ❤🥰😘

Had one indecent that I landed up texting my Vet late at night only to discover he was on holiday in Israel. Bless him he contacted me immediately and stayed in touch, informed the clinic about the situation etc. etc. Worth the money and having a good rapport with your vets. Again Meg, always go with your gut feeling. Major dittos on that.

hobbs is a hawk eyed horse nainy glad she was keeping a close eye and got the vet out asap yes I have had a phone call like that when my fur baby got knocked down by a car and had a call from my step dad to get home quick . (Bacardi was ok after but had a broken pelvis/hock so took 4 months to get her back walking and even then the leg heeled a bit odd so she had one leg a bit shorter than the other )but she adjusted ok cats usually do. im so glad vali is back home and im crossing everything that he gets better and the less invasive thing will work XXXX

glad to hear vali is going to be okay! as a pet parent myself (though to a cat so nowhere near the expense of a horse) i always say there's no price on peace of mind. i've taken my baby to the vet before over just a tiny little bump that turned out to just be a leftover little spot from one of her routine shots she'd gotten recently. the amount of relief i felt was worth every penny i paid the vet to just feel around and find another little spot just like it and confirm that it was probably nothing but that they'd keep an eye on it at future vet visits.

All of us who've had pets or animals knows that dizzying, sinking feeling of helpless uncertainty. It's hard to think of much worse. So glad the little fella pulled thru ❤❤❤ It's funny how similar colic in horses is to gi stasis in rabbits -- or maybe not because it's literally the exact same thing. I've had house rabbits for over ten years and so many times they recover via the car ride to the vet! But of course when it's a serious blockage, getting to the vet and into surgery is required. Do you guys ever do fluids on your own at home, tho? It's something that's really helpful for my little guys. (But of course we don't have vets that will drive out, just an exotics vet with limited hours a long drive away, so we *have* to do a lot ourselves. Still, always good knowing you can)
