Still bringing up that old shit? The boys could play instruments, tho not as good as the Crew. Mike is an accomplished songwriter, and the Crew never wrote one song...ever. The New Monkees of the 80s came and went in a blink, but our guys are cemented in the Walk of Fame. Any more Monkee trivia, Debbie Downer?

In 1966-68 I knew a girl in the neighborhood, I was like 8-9 yrs old and she was a total Monkees fanatic! Everything Monkees she had, all the music, all the merch she could get and every issue of 16, Tiger Beat and other magazines that had the Monkees in them and she would play their music endlessly and I would also watch the show as well so hearing these songs again, some that I haven't heard in nearly 50 years REALLY brings back memories of a time of innocence which is long gone and dead.

Thanks once again Kenn for your outasight work. I can't help wondering if Louie Shelton's amazing work was Donny Kirschner's way of letting the boys know that, like so many others, they were OK for a touring band, but not for studio work. I remember thinking that Rob Grill was a terrific bass player based on Midnight Confessions--haha. Carol Kaye was truly great, and she has written some wonderful books--both autobiographical and about bass technique. She used to offer Skype lessons, which is like learning art from Michelangelo! She's in her 80s and remains one terrific woman.

Louie Shelton plays lead guitar on Valleri which Mike Nesmith had to mimic on the TV show.

@@cinematic35 Well i knew that much of their music was played by other musicians in the background, but I thought Mike did his own thing since he was the most accomplished mucisian in the group. But oh well! still my favorite song! thanks for the FYI

@@ralphsanchico2452 Actually Peter Tork was the most accomplished musician in the group, which Michael himself acknowledges. Peter studied music in college and played multiple instruments brilliantly; I especially loved to hear him play banjo. It was Louie Shelton who played the famous amazing flamenco guitar here. I always like the story of how he taught Michael to play the song so Nez could mimic it with authority in the episode "Captain Crocodile." Not to worry about Michael though; he's a terrific singer, decent guitar player and most would regard him as the best songwriter of the group.
