The Valley Railroad in Essex, Connecticut operates their 1989 built 2-8-2 Mikado #3025 on fall trips. The 3025 is an SY 2-8-2 Mikado, built in 1989 by the Tangshan Locomotive Works in China for the Knox & Kane Railroad of Pennsylvania. It ran on the K&K for about 15 years and was sold the Essex Steam Train in 2008. Following a rebuild and an alteration to resemble a New Haven Railroad J-1, the new 3025 has been an active part of the Valley Railroad.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds of steam on the Connecticut River! Don't forget to comment, like, share, and subscribe for plenty of great railroading action from all over the eastern USA!

Very smooth railroad. The locomotive is well balanced and the track seem well maintained. Nice Job!

Despite the engine isn't the same as how it looked when first coming to America and running on the Knox & Kane till they closed in the early 2000s and then damaged in a fire its good to know thx to the Valley Railroad its been running again thx to their dedicated work and even making it look like a New Haven J1 even if its not exactly the same as what 1 would have looked like in the steam era.

Never heard of this train, but they did a good job "Americanizing" her. I always hate seeing a diesel on the end, though. Makes you think the diesel was doing all the pushing and pulling.
@DynamoProductions-trains
@DynamoProductions-trains 11 жыл бұрын
The diesel was on the rear of the train because the lunch train was tagged onto the rear of the regular excursion. The diesel and the 3 lunch train cars unhooked from the consist at the end of the line, the diesel hauled the lunch train back to Deep River ahead of the 3025's train.

When did they unload the last native made engine from the steam days?. Maybe someday they'll haul one in and fix it up. The 4014, a massive project, too 5 years and a lot of money to return to operation. But, it is a massive engine, the largest ever made. Wonder how many smaller projects are under way out there. I've read now where quite a few museums are turning to China to buy steam engines.
@DynamoProductions-trains
@DynamoProductions-trains 5 жыл бұрын
The last new American steam engines were built around 1950, while China was still building new steam through 1989. There are six Chinese steam locomotives in the US, and Essex was responsible for kicking off that trend.

I can say that if you’re looking for boiler first only, you’ll get a max of 2 or 3 shots per run, rather difficult to chase with the lack of a major route which would normally allow for easy catch up at other railroads like Conway Scenic or Hobo Railroad
@trainern8

@@trainern8 Yep he's correct, Essex is tough to chase thanks to the train speed and the road routes. Whenever we go, we usually set aside two days to get a full video worth of runbys.

Although correct, most referred to the engine as 58, and the engines cab bore the number 58 for a time,that is why we say that it was numbered 58.

how do trains get their numbers?
@TheLpbrennan
@TheLpbrennan 6 жыл бұрын
Janet Vonnik Do you mean trains or locomotives? Regularly scheduled trains were assigned numbers in the timetable to identify them. Odd numbers usually mean a south or west bound train; even numbers for north or east bound trains. The public knew the train as the Twentieth Century Limited, but to New York Central employees it was 26 to Chicago and 25 to New York. Amtrak still does this: The New York to Miami trains are the Silver Meteor and the Silver Star, but to the crews they are 97 and 98 and 91 and 92, respectively, with the odd numbers being southbound. If you mean locomotive numbers, most railroads numbered them in groups, so similar types were identified that way. On the Atlantic Coast Line, light 4-6-2 Pacific types were numbered in the 1500 series. The ACL engine displayed in Jacksonville is number 1504. Every railroad usually numbered engines by type. Trainmen identified them that way. On the Southern, a forty-five hundred was a Mikado 2-8-2, similar to the engine in this video, and normally a freight locomotive. This pattern of numbering continues with diesel locomotives today. You'll notice engines with the same first two numbers will often look alike. One final note: Railroaders refer to engine numbers like this -- 3025 is called the Thirty-twenty-five; the Southern 4501 is the Forty-five-oh-one; the Florida East Coast 153 is the One-fifty-three.

I have noticed that 3025 has very quiet exhaust (chuffing). Does that have something to do with it being Chinese?
@DynamoProductions-trains
@DynamoProductions-trains 10 жыл бұрын
The volume of the exhaust is due to the easy grade along the line, the engine simply doesn't need to work hard to operate the excursions. And although the engine is Chinese, the design of the 2-8-2 ShangYou (better known as the SY) is based off an American Locomotive Company (ALCo) design from the 1920s.

They were at a crossing or station in pretty much every shot in this video. Regulation mandates the bell be activated at the sign for the crossing (whistle post). This also extends to station areas and engine service tracks. Every shot in the video is of one of these situations/locations
