Valley Transportation Authority Light Rail in Action - January 2016

An in-action video of the San Jose LRT, operated by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority. Filmed in January, 2016.
The VTA operates 2000-2004 built KinkiSharyo LRT units. We see these units in action in Downtown San Jose, and at Ohlone/Chynoweth station for the junction between Santa Teresa and Almaden.
The VTA previously had UTDC units built in 1987, which were sold in 2003 to UTA in Salt Lake City, Utah and Regional Transit in Sacramento, California.

I was born in San Jose 13 years ago. I remember these light rails being the best. In 2021, I Moved to San Diego, with October, 2021 being the last time I rode one of these. Nice to see even 7 years ago they still are working well. And still happy that these light rails are still operating as of 2023. It’s only a matter of time until VTA replaces these.

While filming VTA light rails, be careful. The light rail drivers get very pissed off if you are filming close to the track.

+Jason Dick I always stay behind safety barriers/gates/fences. I also use a small point-and-shoot which cannot be seen from a distance.

Is the Green Line light rail reliable for daily commute between San Jose and Mountain View? My son is going to intern in Mountain View and plans to live in San Jose. Are there a lot of delays during rush hour or it's always on time?

Cruise Lover it's a longer route. The Caltrain is a lot quicker, though a bit pricier and less frequent. The VTA LRT is mostly reliable from what I've seen, but I'm only an occasional visitor to San Jose.

Welwyn22 I have a question. Before the Almaden shuttle got discounted in 2019 why did the Winchester-Mountain View line get the civic center signs when it’s around 10 pm? And why do the Santa Teresa-alum rock light rails run until 2 am?

Regrettably, I don't know the answer to any of those questions. I wasn't even aware until recently about the Almaden shuttle being discontinued.

The Winchester-Mountain View line no longer exists. It is now known as the Winchester- Old Ironsides light rail. Also with the Santa Teresa- Alum Rock light rail, that no longer exists. A new orange line was implemented. Starting from Mountain View to Alum Rock. The Blue line now terminates at baypointe.
