Is it mentioned in the Ramayana that Sita was found in the fields as opposed to the popular notion of finding her while ploughing, as if buried. Or is it your interpretation? Please let me know and any reference would be greatly appreciated.

Janak discovered the child as he was clearing the land. In Sanskrit, land that has been ploughed is called Sita, that therefore Janak named her as such. The child was probably hidden by the undergrowth or weeds and not buried under the ground. Valmiki has not given their ages. But one clue we have is that Sita's marriage has been on Janak's mind for some time.
