I think its not the debts, because if that was the case he would've stopped with the gambling terms due to trauma. Gathering information on the wrong person would highly likely be not possible as well since Cypher's information gathering skill is top notch, to the point where he couldn't be detected nor even anyone would get any information about him. I think it has more something to do with Kingdom and what they did to his hometown, his family probably died due to armed conflict that forced him out to join Valorant Protocol.

I never even thought about that... But then if kingdom did something to his family, why would he have joined valorant which is owned by kingdom?

Technically Kingdom and Valorant Protocol share some ties but it's only limited to the fact that the Original 4 of the Valorant Protocol used to be Agents from Kingdom and that they both have Monopoly over their respective Earths, including the Weapons, Spike and the Defuser. Cypher even says this in his voice line when he plays on bind. "What has Kingdom done to this town?! However pretty their lies are, they're just sucking my city dry!" Kingdom having to do with their deaths is just a speculation, since I doubt Cypher would join the Valorant Protocol without him benefiting from it, Kingdom most often being displayed as an antagonist alongside Omega Earth.
