South African employees love cheap labour. Employers prefer understaffed overworked employees paying them on overtime rather than to employ another person to do it. South Africa's economy is dependent on cheap labour, they will not employ someone with a degree that they have to pay more if they can get someone who is cheaper who can do the same thing, with doctors fortunately they are not as easy to replace with cheaper labour but it means hospitals are not willing to employ more doctors because it means less profit for them.

That's actually true. No one should teach you basic things like understanding the SA economy. Many students are clueless when it comes to linking their studies to real world situations. It's really no one's fault that they do not take the time to educate themselves how the SA business ecosystem is set up so they can choose correctly. Understand what problems exist and study something relevant. Some of them can't even tell you what they're passionate about, they just study and hope! It doesn't work like that.

Skills mismatch is also caused by the fact that universities are mostly theory based and so a student graduates but still needs to be taught some practical skills and uncover the practical side of what they studied in varsity. The answer is one TVET Colleges to be built. Just now if you need a professional black plumber, welder, builder you have to look for a Zimbabwean. The reason is that the government there took deliberate steps to ensure that not only academic strength is built but took steps on practical skills. Where have you heard that one qualifies for a course only theoretically and have to go round knocking on business that is sometimes not prepared to assist.
@khalalelorathebe6049 ай бұрын
South African institutions should do more practicals than theory because at the end of the day , it is all about experience. The problem with South Africa is that they focus more sending doctors in other countries while we need doctors ourselves. Instead , they can send PhDs to other countries to study then bring the skills back home since other countries have advanced education system...Another thing is that how can Universities hire professors who are not familiar of what they are lecturing , if professors do not know the field they are in , then where are we going as a country ?...

@edb32779 ай бұрын
The ideal plan for a way out is to not assume that there is a job out there waiting for you but instead augment your skills with other needed skills. Think what are the problems that need solving in this country, how can you resolve that problem? Your PhD or other degree is just the start, the problem of a country changes every day and technology advances every 14 days. We all know there is a lot to do to get us in aposition where our children can have a choice it's our job to build and pave the way to get us to that point and yes make a little money along the way. Think what can I do for my country not what my country can do for me. All the best.

a lot of opportunities are missed because graduates hold fast for the top jobs instead of considering entry-level positions -get your foot in the door first any way you can, humble yourself get to know the managers, once in they will recognize your abilities and promote you or you might be exposed to more companies that will be willing to give you a shot because they know you- trouble is very few want to do that as egos are in the way- do whatever comes your way and work from that point- I realize the income is the goal, but make experience and exposure the first goal and be willing to be patient- instead of just assuming you will be hired for what you qualified for - my 2 cents

Theres a whole gap in the value chain we are not a part of. We just dig minerals, then car parts are brought back and we just assemble. What about the purification steps of the minerals, the engineering part of it, the creative product development side

Before nsfas there was a skills shortage, we know that. Nsfas bursary scheme closed that gap and niw we graduates for every field in the country, there is no skills mismatch there is just no jobs. By 2030 a honors & even some Masters programs will not mean anything in this country. The pace of graduates doesnt meet the country's rate of economic growth thats it. It will just be harder to get into NQF 9 & 10 in the future bcz of this and more ppl will be unemployed and the job market is gonna take advantage of that.

IT jobs have graduate positions that state 2-3yrs requirement. Government has talks about removing requirement in reality that changes nothing companies will wait till they find the person who is not probably just far older than a graduate but has experience aswell

I agree with this. The government invests a lot in education ( both basic and higher education) but the Return on Investment is negative. The government does not properly prepare students with entering the job market. The government should properly invest in education by driving students to enroll more for qualifications that are on demand, i.e. STEM subjects, IT, Finance, Business.
@edb32779 ай бұрын
Agree but let's not rely to much on the government, they are there for the infrastructure. The people are there to build and progress the country, it's why we need to have more graduates in STEMS and arts. If we seek change we first need to look within ourselves. We are here to lead, not to be led.

Let us start by unpacking this thing called "skills mismatch".... what do we need for our economy to grow? we have jobless growth in SA and what other metrics can we use to practically make sense of our economy, the real one!!!! I also "think" a focus on the university curriculum as a response is a bit late for an intervention. Would it be useful to speak the employment sector to get their opinions on this- this is complex!!! post covid our govt said there is no shortage of work- so we have to open those channels where this work sits, for this work to be formalized so people can "employed"!!!!
