This video takes an existing painting and extends the value range to enhance the composition and to punch up the dominant area.

When I taught watercolor classes, I had a baggie of grey and black torn shapes of construction paper that I would place into students paintings to show them how a darker value would make their painting pop. They started to visualize the possibilities!

That's a good strategy. I too have done this. I have also painted on their paintings(with their permission of course)

Great point! It only took me 30 years to learn that watercolor is like golf, the fewer the strokes the better the score.

CARL!!!!!!! Just rediscovered your KZbin channel. How I love to watch you paint while listening to you explain. Keep 'em coming. It is very motivating and inspiring....keeps me at my easel. I saw your painting, "The Cable Drum," posted in the UWS fall exhibition. It made me happy, and reminded me of sitting in your workshops in Ephraim. It's the mark of a true artist to make a piles of junk look beautiful. Nobody can do that as well as you.
@CarlPurcellArt

Thanks, Vaughn. I guess I don't think of the pile as junk, only as an arrangement of interesting shapes.

This is an informative, well-presented video on enhancing the tonal range in watercolour paintings. Placing a BEFORE and AFTER image adjacent to each other at the end of the video would have strengthened your message. Cheers.

You're very welcome! There are so many little things that we as instructors hardly think about as we paint, but that are questions in the minds of students. I'm glad you found this helpful. Thanks for the comment.

A wonderful tutorial Carl. This is a great illustration of how a composition employing by design a full tonal range makes for a broader diversity in contrast and hence greater visual stimulus. There are two major needs that a viewer of art craves either knowing or unknowing - One is difference & the other is ambiguity - both have the ability to capture and retain the minds eye in a depth of cognitive dialogue.🙏

Thank you, Andre for that very insightful comment. One could walk into a painting class and without seeing any of the paintings, give the advise that they need to increase the range of their values. That would probably hit most of the paintings.

@@CarlPurcellArt This is very true Carl so why don't painters give such advice ? I guess they are just painters and not educators !
