This is really good. I think understanding value is fairly simple. The real problem arises when you try to consciously distribute and group values across a painting. In what ratios should the lightest lights and darkest darks be? How should I group the scattered light and shadows (especially while drawing from a photograph), etc.? These are some common problematic questions that arise when one starts painting. Some people, after going through a lot of good paintings, might have a natural inclination to do these automatically by trusting their instincts, while others will require deliberate practice like the western schools of painting, narrowing it down to a few variables and working on that alone, like the color block exercises.
