Not a bad video at all. Thank you, I am now convinced that I can change successfully change my gaskets. It would definitely be a good Idea If I also changed the spark plugs while I have that intake off. Thanks again.

If I can do it, then you can as well, all it takes is patience and the right tools.

@@BeastboyRichie before you replaced your valve cover gasket did you have blue smoke on startup after car sit for hours?? By the way nice Maxima

Please do not use so much sealer as the extra sealer can be pushed to the inside of the cover then come loose and stop up oil passages. Valve covers leak due to the rubber drying out and shrinking. By using the full set of gaskets for the cover, bolts, and spark plug tubes you will stop the leak. If a sealer is used just a nice uniform bead around the whole head will be fine. I still think you did a good job.

Thanks, that's a great point you brought up. I learn through everyone's comments and suggestions.

I am glad you took it the right way. I started working in a shop at age 14 and I am 57 now. I still learn new stuff as things change. I watched your video and learned what I needed to know and that is what tools I need to take with me to do that job. My toolbox is way to big to just pitch in the truck and go do the job but by watching it done now I can just pitch a few things in a tool bag and be set to go. I wish you all the best and hope a toolbox comes your way soon.

By the way, if you're not replacing the rubber grommets around the bolts of the valve cover often the cover will start leaking soon as they also shrink. Here is a trick, Take an old bicycle intertube and cut out some circles about the same size as that grommet and poke a hole in the middle. Put the bolt in the hole you just made in the middle and bolt it down. The added thickness of the intertube will make up for the shrinkage of the grommet giving you the downforce you need on the main valve cover gasket. Just go by a motorcycle or bicycle shop and ask if they have any tubes in the trash. LET THEM KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO CUT THEM UP. for the rubber and not going to reuse them as Intertubes by patching them.

72+HourBoB You are right on point. A nice bead should be all that's needed for the gasket to work without going back to do the job again. The one thing I tell people is when one changes plugs? They'll notice a much better performance in the engine. The 3.5 is one hell of a motor. If taken care of? One will have a very good motor for many many miles! Peace.

You make it look easy my mechanic gave me an estimate for 160.00 same car same problem I think it’s fair.

When you removed the rear valve cover bolts you said to remove in the reverse order of the tightening sequence. the order that you mentioned is the same as the tightening sequence from my Haynes manual, so what is should look like is loosen from 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and ,1 bolts. Otherwise that seeing you can do this job with a raggedy tool kit motivates me to do this job because my tool box is not much better.
@BeastboyRichie5 жыл бұрын
Correct, loosening is 10, 9, 8 etc. It's a relatively easy job once you remove the intake manifold. All it takes is patience and the the right tools. And watch all the videos u can.

I just replaced all of my plugs (3.5 2004 3.5 motor, Nissan Maxima). The #3 plug had oil in the sleeve. I cleaned the sleeve with paper towels as I did the coil. Replaced with new plug and clean coil. Snugged everything down. I will monitor that side of the motor for leaks. I do have to say once anyone pulls the mani off? You never forget how to do it again. The first time is challenging. After that? No Prob. If I notice a leak again? Gasket time. As much as was I intimidated with this job? I got it done. Even with those two hard to get at bolts that hold the "tunnel to the throttle body assembly. The right tools makes the day. Peace

Thanks for posting this, will be helpful when I do this on my 02 hopefully this week, tired of it stinking while I drive... also the chipmunk voice in the sped up sections cracked me up 😂
@cedricmiller43703 жыл бұрын
Did the leaking valve cover cause yours to have a slight burnt smell when driving?
@BenTh173 жыл бұрын
@@cedricmiller4370 Yes, it’s most noticeable when you are idling or have just parked the car. I am actually in the process of replacing the covers and gaskets now. It’s a small leak and I never have to add oil but it sure smells bad.

Yo, get on craigslist or go to a habitat for humanity store. They should have some toolboxes for real cheap.
@BeastboyRichie5 жыл бұрын
Good idea, I should have done that long ago.
@midgard91365 жыл бұрын
You should try to swap out that intake manifold in exchange for the 350z/g35 intake manifold/plenum. No need to remove it to get the the rear valve and coils.
@BeastboyRichie5 жыл бұрын
I actually thought about that since the g/z manifold design makes more power but I don't know how well it will fit since the engine is in a different direction.
@midgard91365 жыл бұрын
It fits perfect. The bolt holes line up. U just have to cut the elbow that goes to the throttle body and swap it...we met before (Altima headers)
@BeastboyRichie5 жыл бұрын
Ohh, what's good bro...am definitely gonna try it. Is that the setup you're running? Am curious to see how it looks like.
@midgard91365 жыл бұрын
I bought it (revup) but haven't installed it yet. I need to port/polish it and I need one of those racing spacers to replace the gasket. My winter project. Btw I found that g35/350z had special editions called "revup", which came with upgraded intake manifold.

Obviously a late comment. But, fwiw. some older cars that might have imperfections and might need some RTV (silicone). Felpro has been making gaskets FOREVER. As long as the gasket surfaces are clean and not warped, just follow their instructions. If the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve is working, there should be no reason oil will seep out of the valve cover gaskets unless they are not sealing at all. Basically, the vacuum created by the intake will want to suck the oil back into the valve cover. Extra RTV, usually is not the solution. i didn't watch the rest of your video, but hopefully it worked for you.
