I remember my first ever Valve game was Portal 2. At first, I was playing a pirated copy of the game that used the version of the Valve intro where the guy doesn't move at all. Couple years pass and I get Steam and buy the game legit, but the version of the Valve intro is the one where he turns his head to the camera. First time I saw this, it scared the shit out of me.

I love these games but Left 4 dead has NOTHING in the story department, portal is just chele being toyed with by Glados and Wheatley and Half Life, well, 2 wasn't necessarily that strong story wise. Its the interactions in the games that matter. I'm not dissing these games either I'm just saying, well, it's kinda like how Dark Souls tells it's story. Speculation. I really love Valve's brand. I think it's easily the strongest example of branding in the gaming industry, actually. There's something edgy, weird, avant garde about the soundtrack and the imagery they use.
