Guess I'm a Valvoline Man now. Been looking for something to put in my '76 350sbc. High Mileage plus some synthetic MMO sounds like the ticket.

I prefer the original naphthenic regular MMO. More solvent of crud than the synthetic MMO PAO, but just less suited to Long Drain Intervals.

That 76 350 has a flat tappet cam more than likely, I would run the Valvoline blue Diesel oil because it has alot more zinc and phosphorus than the other oils shown. (I've worked at my uncle's machine shop off and on since I was 16 and I've seen a lot of cams that get wiped out because folks aren't using oil with plenty of zinc and phosphorus. I also have over 2 million miles logged (alot of unlogged miles too 😂) with only Rotella t4/t6 in my semi, mostly t6. I run Rotella in my tractors, both of my Silverado pickups (1994 & 2005). Both of these trucks have had Rotella since I bought them new. Since I have a lot of equipment I buy 55-gallon drums of Rotella for fairly cheap. I even like using the Rotella in my new zero-turn lawn mower and back in the day I used it in circle track racecars.

just a thanks for the memory. in the 70's my dad would use nothing but havoline. i know, it doesn't apply anymore. but i asked him why. he just said it's the only oil i'm not allowed to use at work. he worked at pontiac engineering as a 'mechanic'. he built the prototype engines, ran them until they blew up, took them apart to find flaws. the oil back then just had less wear on the engines. and their goal was to destroy them. he was really good too. if you seen 'smokey and the bandit' he built that car. two really. got to see them before the movie on bring your kid to work day. i even got to see the fiero when it was a clay model. he hated that car. it's engineering was all wrong. guess the valveoline reminded me. so thanks. and remember, if you love what you do, no matter the work, you never work a day in your life. and seems you're loving it.

@peter the engines my dad built weren't meant for production. it wouldn't have made 'practical sense' production wise. cost effective to build as many as they did on the line. add that to the year it was done.. still the 'gas crisis years'. they were 'factory hot rodded' so to speak. can't remember the difference in the horsepower. it was quite a bit though. the others that were wrecked in the movie were factory. there are video's about one i know of, geez, i might look them up to see the differences myself. been a long time. refresh my memory. with a 😁i got to sit in one of them still in the building. but yes, they were built special.

@@jerryjeromehawkins1712 just thinking, i might have sat in his car, before he did. i did look a bit more into it, there ended up to be 110 of those cars built. but, without question, i certainly did sit in one of the first two. and more than likely, it was his.

@peter i'm old now. wish i still had it. it was a one off 'bobber'. 9' long. had the '67' xlch engine. knuckle head. but bored and stroked. even had the heads ported and polished. nothing but frame, gas tank and engine. kick start only. back in '93' my neighbor wanted it. and i wanted his '82' berlinetta camaro. he had the v-6 pulled out, with a 350 turned to a 383 ci stroker in it, with full headers and 3" duals. tranny built, rear end too, and frame even added. it wasn't built for that type of engine. even had the dash lights changed to red . super cool. so we traded. if i'm not mistaken, the bike is, or at least was at finches' in michigan. he wanted the bike too. so if memory serves, finch bought it from him. but might have gave you a helluva run.

I.ve owned GM's for many years. Always have used Valvoline in my GM'/ and now I even have a 299,00 Sienna. Using Valvoline High Mileage. Years ago I bought a brand new 1978 Z28 4 speed 350 Camaro. Went in for my first free oil change. Took it out and drove about 100 miles. Went back to the Dealer and asked what oil they used. They said Quaker State. I said put it back up on the Rack and get that stuff out of there. Could tell I my Brand new car it was running rough. I told them Put Valvoline oil in that Camaro. Smoothed out almost instantly. Been running Valvoline ever since. Especially in my GM vehicles. Great job on this video. Reenforced what I have known all along. The people at Valvoline have Oil down to a Science. Where it can be trusted in any vehicle.

Owning a few older cars, I am pretty old school when it comes to motor oil and prefer to stick to a high SAPS European formula meeting ACEA A3/4 at a bare minimum, but preferably MB Sheet 229.5 and Porsche A40 as well. This means I primarily run Mobil 1 FS 0W-40, but their new "Super Car" formula isn't worth the Buffalo poo on a nickel. I was looking to switch to Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30, but EM managed to foxtrot up that formula up as well, which ultimately means Amsoil Signature Series 0W-40 will be my go to. With that being said, I have been quite pleasantly surprised with Valvoline Euro 5W-40. I bought it to run in a Mitsubishi 6G75 3.8L SOHC V6, which was run on the quite possibly the cheapest oil possible by a previous owner, probably with extended drains, causing a lot of varnish build up in the heads. Paired with an OE Toyo Roki filter, I put the Valvoline in and told my friend to drive it for 3,000 miles. Long story short, we did an oil and filter change after 2,978 miles and I noticed there was now a lot of shiny metal under the valve covers just by looking through the fill hole. The oil came with with a bit of a red tint to it as well. Looking at an oil VOA, it does have a lot of calcium in there (3,000+ ppm), but this was not what I expected from an oil that cost $26 for 5 quarts. After the second oil change, it got better and eventually ended up looked super clean under there. What was supposed to be a "cheap Group III synthetic" turned out to be what my buddy continues to use today after 3 years. Of course I'm looking at only a single aspect here - detergency and cleaning ability - but sometimes what appears to be a mediocre VOA proves otherwise in a real world application.
@FordBossMe
@FordBossMe Жыл бұрын
So this is where we need to look at detergent different there's too much bad information on the internet and calcium and magnesium are not going to clean what's already done to the engine it's going to keep things from getting worse but it is not going to actually clean and I think that's where people get hung up
@balkanca
@balkanca Жыл бұрын
Correct, there's more to cleaning than just CA and MG alone. For instance, GTL and esters have great cleaning abilities, which is where Red Line and some Mobil 1 and Pennzoil products shine. That said, I would love to find out what base oil blend Valvoline uses in its Euro 5W-40. The MSDS only tells part of the story.

What most armchair chemists dont and cant calculate based off these very very limited oil analysis is the quality of the base oil and its ability to perform the functions additives are intended to supplement. An oil with an impressive additive package likely has that extreme amount of additives to actually meet the grade requirements. Mobil 1 has low additives... while also being the worlds leading producer of petroleum, the top earning company in the world, and having a completely vertically integrated ownership from production to refining to marketing end products. They can literally produce the best refined products in the world in house. Valvoline has to go out on the market and obtain contracts for base oil supply as they ONLY blend and market motor oil... that might be a large reason why its stuffed with moly.

They need the correct spec stuff, and if you have one keep receipts, You'll be passed over on selling time unless you do, Cams I read wear fast and junk yards all are full of diesels with valve cover off em, cause they took the car in with a noise only to be told Dummy you didnt but the correct spec oil your engine is toast. another thing is companies that say Suitable for vs approved, there was a big law suit over the term Company got off saying Hey I said it would work not approved for its use.

It's right there with it the only reason the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is not as high with the additive pack it's because they use a gas to liquid formula so it's 99.5% cleaner and more pure than most oils so they don't need as much additive pack but I would be tempted to possibly say that I like both about the same

Personally most impressed by the Valvoline Advanced for under 75,000 miles and High Mileage MaxLife for above that. Obviously you could just use the high mileage stuff if you want but I like the balanced add pack, viscosity, and flashpoint of the advanced while also being so readily available for even 0w-16 oils like some of the new Toyotas in my life. Just changed a 2014 Sienna with 120k miles using the high mileage maxlife 0w-20 (super affordable which is awesome) because your videos turned me onto the advanced. Definitely glad I bought some after seeing the oil analysis and thanks so much for making these videos.

For some reason, I seem to normally use another brand oil for my motor oil on my car (I typically get what's on sale), but then I use Valvoline on my motorcycle, Valvoline for my rear differential, and Valvoline for my manual transmission and automatic transmission. Walmart doesn’t carry Valvoline 0-16 and I’m tried of the high- mileage stuff, this oil looks great and it’s probably the best next to the Toyota 0-16 . Don’t go over 6,000 miles on a oil change. I’ve been changing oil at 3,500 miles. Even if people are planning on selling their cars after 3 to 6 years, it’s immoral to pass on car to someone, a car that has gone over 10,000 miles without an oil change, that’s my opinion .. THANKYOU! I have been running Valvoline Advance in my GM truck and thinking about thinking about switching to their high milage and this made my mind up to do it. I run Valvoline because it uses less oil between oil changes than Mobile One I put Pennzoil Platinum once and with less than 500 mile the oil turned very dark black. So I went back to Valvoline. I agree 5,000 MILE OIL CHANGES.

It's possible it was black from cleaning out the engine though, so now I wonder is the made from natural gas oil better at cleaning and suspending contaminants...I'll have to do some research. M1 does seem to get dark a bit fast too, also could be heat cycles. Switching to Valvoline though next oil change.

This makes me feel good about using Val fs hm 0w20 in my oil change on my 2003 F150. It has 413,000 on it and this is the first high mileage oil ive used in it. It runs smooth and quiet like always. It has the 5.4 2 valve, and has never needed any internal work. As a matter of fact its all original except the alternator and heater hose ( of course except tune ups and a ptfe? valve, brakes, maintenance) .

Why do you use 0w20 on your 5.4 2v?
@michaelhungate7506
@michaelhungate7506 3 ай бұрын
@flimflam6547 the 0 weight oils get to the vital parts on startup much faster than a 5 would. The truck has 419,000 miles on it now and I'm on my second oil change with the 0w20 and will not be changing back to 5w20. The 520 is fine, I just prefer to use a thin oil to circulate the oil faster on a dry startup. Actually the high mileage version of any oil is the thickest in that grade so the 20 is a thick 20. I never knew that for example a 5w20 oil varies in thickness from a thin 520 to a mid weight 520 to a heavyweight 520 . This is with all modern oils.

@flimflam6547 so far, purrs like always. If you're engine is in good shape, it should be fine. Your at 309,000, that's an accomplishment! I used to use 20% marvel mystery oil in with 530, which works fine too. With the marvel in it, I figured it thinned it down to a 2?/25? or something like that. I'm not a great mechanic or anything like that but I do know how to maintain an engine. Also, with having an F150 of this model, there are plenty of forums on everything about them. Oil forums are very informative. Bob's the oil guy is one. These new oils with the GF6A rating are supposed to be ideal for timing chains and the plastic guides

If its a European model I use the same just the Euro version. I wanna start looking into the racing stuff for my full out custom whips with serious engine work. looks like a good oil that ultra HM, I have always used either valvoine/penzoil or quaker state full syn what ever is on sale. I’ve been a long time Mobil 1 and Valvoline synthetic oil. Recently I switched to Pennzoil Platinum synthetic in my 07 Avalanche because of the occasional lifter tap from the junk afm crap. I feel like it makes a big difference. Next time I will try Pennzoil Ultra Platinum synthetic and hopefully it works even better. In my 14 Chevy Cruze I’m currently using Mobil 1 high mileage synthetic because I already have a couple gallons of it on hand. My honest opinion on Amsoil is it’s overpriced and overrated. I know it’s a good oil but but like you said I don’t think you get what you pay for with the price and extra work required to just find the oil. Also like you I don’t like going more than 5k miles on an oil change and so that’s another reason why Amsoil doesn’t work for me. I don’t care what the manufacturer says, I don’t trust an oil in my engine for 20k-25k miles like Amsoil claims.

Great videos as always man… Hey out of all those what would you choose for a vehicle older of course runs great but burns about a quart every thousand miles… With the ingredient combination being something that leans in the direction of possibly slowing that down I understand the full synthetic and all that stuff behind that is not exactly the greatest either but I don't mind and little bit if I can get maximal protection and performance of the engine… Thank you for your response
