I fell in love with this movie when it came out on VHS (gawd, I’m old) for three main reasons: 1. Cleavon Little as Sebastian. Awesomeness personified. And I never once thought he was a vampire, strangely - I always believed that he was just the Countess’ “familiar”, so to speak, like a much cooler and sexier Renfield, granted immortality in order to keep her company. Huh. 2. The dance scene is cheesy but awesome. Fight me. 3. 18:41 - Exhibit A: Jim Carrey is the sexiest vampire I’ve ever seen. Rawr. 🧛🏻 I also freaking love the Countess’ wardrobe, omg 🖤❣️

We had our own set of challenges but, really, it was the last time young people seemed to have actual fun.

I really love that you talked about the difference between objectification and female empowerment. Thank you so much for that!
@handler88387 жыл бұрын
No one that does this is dumb or unaware, is simply a demographics thing. If you see women objectification heightened, is clearly with hetero males as an audience in mind. In 1985 there wasnt a huge female demographic running to see monster films. The monster and the fantastic have always been a guys thing until very recently, therefore the entertainment created was majorly unconcerned about females perspectives. Long story short, if your audience is male centric, you are going to create male centric content more often than not. Women need to f sh*t up too, women need to make mistakes. Women can be vain, shallow, dumb, exploitative, naive, irrational, vindictive, self centered etc etc etc. I definitely do not think all content with females present need to empowered, or positive role models. that just means there wont be any variety in your storytelling.
@legogirl87 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I agree with what you're saying. I do know how it was in the 1980s and I can see why women were portrayed the way they were back then. It still does not make it ok though and it's important to talk about it. The reason why is to make sure that the objectification does not happen in new media, which sadly it still does... Sure, it's much, much better now compared to the 80s but we still have a long way to go. Just because a few non objectified but still sexy characters exists does not mean that the problem is gone. And also, no matter what gender they are, a character is suppose be a human, a person. And a person is not perfect. A person fails sometimes or do good things or bad things etc.
@legogirl87 жыл бұрын
None of them. Both are bad because they can pressure women and men to act in a certain way, women thinking that they need/have to be desirable all they time and men thinking that they need/have to be disposal all the time. It should not be about living up to what many expect out of a gender, it's about choice. If woman wants to be desirable then let her. And if a man wants to be disposable then let him. True, choosing to be desirable is something that can't be done all the time since that's something in the eye of the beholder. But a person/character can be desirable without her/him being objectified. Exempel, Esmeralda from Disney Hunchback of Notre Dame. She has her moments of being very sexy and desirable, and she's probably very much aware of that she's attractive. But that's not all she is. She has personality, she has an arc, she is a person and she's not in the story to be something sexy for the male audience to look at. She's more then just a very attractive woman.
@dimodrenchev50527 жыл бұрын
Legogirl - are you a child? A woman need to embrace her female nature and believe me most of the men i know do not want just sexy hot woman and nothing else , its way more complex then that ..most of the men want a partner and a friend and also smart and interesting person , only the little boys and the old fools desire just hot woman and nothing more then that , a real men want many many things ,just like the real women ...we have 7 000 000 000 or more human beings and good technology and science , to be with some sexy human is easy ,to find person worthy to be loved is the rare thing .. you believe in stereotypes of the same movies you dont like , how many times you have talk with men about what they really want of women - probably not so much or you have talk with some fools if you really think all that men wants are stupid sexy women !
@legogirl87 жыл бұрын
Where did I ever say "I believe that all men just wants hot women"? What we are discussing here is how women and men are portrayed in media and how this can effect real people. As I wrote in the third comment in this thread, portraying women only as beings that should be desirable can put pressure on women. And portraying men as beings that should be disposable all the time can put pressure on men. I know that not all male/female characters are portrayed like this ( I took Esmeralda from Disney's Hunchback Of Notre Dame as an example) If a woman wants to be sexy, let her. If a man wants to be disposable, let him. It's their choice.

10:30 Jim Carrey was actually typecast in these bland, straight men roles at the time and he hated it. It was only when the Wayans allowed him to do whatever he wanted on "In Living Color" that he was allowed to be wacky. The character he is doing in this movie is the same as his character on an NBC sitcom he was doing at the time called "The Duck Factory".

Honestly I think one of the writers came up with the joke of someone having to get laid in order to not die and then their partner saving them by having a quickie with them at the last minute and the whole movie was just them trying to figure out a way to build up to that joke.

The twist of this movie is not that the vampire is a female. The twist is; though the female vampire is older, wiser & trying for a younger man using all her skills; the younger girl doesn't wear revealing clothes, nor is she loose, the young girl thinks of winning against a vampire's tactics & will not give up that easily. It is silliness, but well done & a new twist of the vampire's sexual energy in the sense of innocence in the girl vs. maturity of the female vampire.

why didn't she just abduct a younger boy lock him away until he turns 18 and then eats him. for that matter why is biting some guy so difficult? chain him up and just drain him like a pig. seriously your a evil monster, act like it. you know the idea of a character willing to sacrifice their humanity to obtain their ideal of perfect beauty can be very interesting. especially if you add in some insane hatred of all things the character finds ugly. if you've ever played bioshock you know how disturbingly terrifying such a character can be.
@Khenfu_Cake7 жыл бұрын
sonicloyalfan I thought the exact same thing. "She needs to bite a virgin three different times, so she has to seduce them." Or she could just use her vampiric super strength and get the blood that way. Unless there is some weird rule that they need to be willing or something. I dunno; just seems like a non-issue to me.

kinda seems like they thought that since the movie is a comedy the villain can't be intimidating. of course who framed roger rabbit is a comedy and yet judge doom isn't just intimidating, he's freaking terrifying.
@PassTheMarmalade19577 жыл бұрын
More like they thought that since the villain is a beautiful woman, the only way she can be at all intimidating is in the "I'm going to steal your man" way. The whole fact that Mark's humanity is at risk and this woman is basically trying to kill him kind of gets brushed aside in favour of Robyn desperately trying to win back her boyfriend from a sexy vampire.

Dressing or acting sexy does not give a woman control of her circumstances, in the same way that holding a gun doesn't make you impervious to bullets. It can boost your confidence, but it doesn't mean you won't confidently shoot yourself in the foot. Empowerment is not about control, and it's a misleading word as it gives no actual power. It's meant to make someone realize their potential, something they can do, but won't, due to fear of failure or rejection.

I want to go on record saying that my favorite Jim Carrey movie is "The Majestic." The scene where Jim remembers all of his former life while watching a Bruce Campbell B movie and where he calls the man who thinks he's his son "Dad" just before he dies shows that Jim is a brilliant dramatic performer and master in the art of subtlety, as you pointed out here... shame the rest of the world will forever know him as Lloyd Christmas or Ace Ventura.

You can feel free to disagree with me but I honestly think both Mark and Robin are meant to be teens who follow and fall victim to the conflicting sexual expectations of their genders. (Mark feeling emasculated because he’s expected to be having sex at 18, and Robin feeling frustrated because she’s expected to be a virginal nice girl at age 18.) The vampire takes advantage of Marks being young and stupid and giving into his friends peer pressure. And Robin finally letting go of the expectations of other people and doing what she stated she wanted to do ultimately saves Mark. (Even if it wasn’t perfect and let’s face it who’s first time is ever truly perfect. It should always be consensual but there’s such a thing as putting too much pressure on making like you imagine it that you just end up disappointed.) so I guess the overall message is sex is ok and don’t force yourself to conform to peer pressure and social expectations.

I can see Elvira in that role, glad she didn't take it. another thing I noticed is that loser friends in clown themed fast food jobs. Killer Klowns much? The countess should have taken notes from Marsha, the Black Fury Ronin from the howling. she's what I imagine as a sexually empowered female. her being a predator also adds that hint of unease. she knows who she is, knows what she wants, when she gets the scent nothing will stop her, not even moral obligation such as marriage. Dammit! If they had the actress who portrayed Marsha. the countess probably would be a better character.
