I have been an art school student and have studied many books on the subject of comic art and painting as well. I find it funny, (or not), that I learn more in a few minutes with one of your videos than I get in a complete college course. You entertain me but even more you instruct me with what I have hoped to learn. Thank you for the time you give by making these vids.

Rodger, Sadly this was the case with my schooling, too. I learned surprisingly little about illustration even though I was majoring in it in college. I learned everything about illustration by talking regularly with three professional illustrators that had a studio near my school. I just walked right in one day and said "Can I sit here all day and watch you guys work?". They said yes and I did that for weeks or months. And it was all free advice. So I'm thrilled to pass it on and do the same for others.

This is why I may never be a good artist,your techniques are counter intuitive to what colours I would lay down .When you do it pop’s and you are like of course it makes sense.But if I do a original I can’t do it as you are able.I try to copy paintings and such to learn the techniques.But I fall a bit short.I will keep trying,but cheers to you and your work.Thank you.

Amazing work!! Is there a reason why you didn't do a sienna/umber wash in the beginning like you did on your goblin painting? Is it because the chipboard is already off white? Thanks in advance!
@jeffmiracolaartist
@jeffmiracolaartist 8 жыл бұрын
+Rodrigo Perez I know this response is two months late. Sorry about that. Yes, the chipboard is already brown, but that's only part of the reason. For this piece I was going for speed. I wanted to get it done faster as I considered this really just a colored sketch. There was no need for me to spend the time to do a brown underpainting.

Thanks, Through narration it feels that with this technique you are at home. I'd like to ask how do you deal with unfamiliar territories when all elements suddenly go wrong. Do you stop and go back or let it go? The part of the anwser probably lies in some doodles but I had no chance to see them.
@jeffmiracolaartist
@jeffmiracolaartist 10 жыл бұрын
Rafael, For this particular piece of art there were no doodles/thumbnail drawings. I just started drawing. I've had many years to make mistakes. But now I seldom get to the point where I have to completely redo a painting. I make sure to plan them out properly ahead of time. Quick drawings/paintings like the one in this video are supposed to be fun for me. If I don't get a line perfect or paint bleeds into an area I didn't want it to, then I just go with it an see where it takes me. These are essentially colored sketches.

Just water and acrylic paint. The paint is thinned out so it is more transparent.

Hey Jeff! Its me again. I was wanting to ask you something. I use prismacolor colored pencils a lot. I've been hearing a lot of things on how prismacolor is not what they used to be and the quality of the pencil is horrible now. I was wanting to know if you use prismacolor and if not what pencil's would you recommend. Sorry I know I have been writing to you a lot. I know your very busy.
@jeffmiracolaartist
@jeffmiracolaartist 10 жыл бұрын
Brandon LeMaster I don't do a lot of art with colored pencils. These days I only use white and brown colored pencils during figure drawing sessions or for use in mixed media sketches. They do exactly what I need them to do, so the quality seems perfect to me.

Hi Jeff. I I was just wondering if the paintings you do on chipboard are archival? Can they be framed just like any other painting?
@jeffmiracolaartist
@jeffmiracolaartist 10 жыл бұрын
Crystal, I don't normally work on chipboard for any professional work. These are drawings/paintings I'm doing on the inside cover of my Monstrosity sketchbook for fans. It was a long time ago, but I'm fairly sure I used acid-free chipboard to have the covers of my book made. If so, then yes it would be archival. Just make sure if you want to work on chip board that the packaging says "acid-free". And yes, they could be framed just like any other painting.

jeffmiracola Thanks Jeff. I work primarily in pastels, but I have a ton of paint and colored pencils sitting around, so I'm always looking for a surface to use them on that works well for me. I have yet to find it, so I thought this might be an interesting way to go.
@jeffmiracolaartist
@jeffmiracolaartist 10 жыл бұрын
crystal eldridge I would use another surface besides chip board to begin with. a nice arches-reeves watercolor paper would be nice or illustration board (but you'd have to put a few layers of Gesso on it).

Why cardboard/ chipboard? It just seems like a fragile medium that warps easy and is not sturdy
@jeffmiracolaartist
@jeffmiracolaartist 3 жыл бұрын
The chipboard was the front and back covers of this book of drawings I put together. I did this drawing on the inside of the cover for someone that bought the book. I do not normally work on chipboard for my usual paintings/drawings. Because correct, it is not a very sturdy surface.
