Never saw furring strips put up like that on a van. You maximized the space in your van. Hmmm...got me thinking now. Good job.

I would only do it the way he does if you will be in very mild climates. The metal framing of the van will create a thermal bridge between the outside and the inside with how he did it. You get a little extra space, but you lose insulation between the metal and the final wall of the van.
@wkw40952 жыл бұрын
Easy to be me sitting here critiquing. It would be a good idea to use loctite blue on those brackets to the metal van structure. Vibration is our enemy. Still learning from your experience. Thanks for sharing.

Is someone able to explain why it’s necessary to add the wood battens at the very beginning to the metal “framing” - to then be able to screw the wood to wood? As in, the metal battens are already in place across the roof as part of the van structure - why can’t we just screw wood panelling directly into these bits of metal? Seeing as the screws wouldn’t go through the roof or anything. I just don’t understand the reasoning and no one mentions why in any videos. Can anyone let me know? Thank you!

I think he is trying to maximize room. It seems like a lot of work to save a very small amount of space but it’s his build.
@demonhogo Жыл бұрын
i think you're right. Many youtubers are just doing what everyone else is. Your way would save space. There might be a smidge more heat transfer from the outside, but i doubt it
@IamNumberXll Жыл бұрын
I’m also choosing not to put furring strips on my roof because I am 6’4 I need every inch of head space I can get. So I’m doing panels directly to the metal beams.
@questioner1596 Жыл бұрын
It's not necessary but makes the installation easier so you don't have to avoid the existing holes. I'm with you, though, since in my van I installed threaded inserts in the cross beams and used thin sheet material to maximize headroom. However, my ceiling vents have bezels that stick down a few inches, removing my carefully saved headroom!

The way you did the wall framing is the right way this way you don't loose no inches side to side
@BuildingVanLife3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. That was my intention so I could keep the bed width ways instead of length.
@lucyfergusson40707 ай бұрын
what do you do if you need to drill something into the metal structures that aunt covered in wood? I see some people frame on the outside and I think this makes it easier but it does take up some space. Thanks in advance!

@BuildingVanLife7 ай бұрын
@@lucyfergusson4070because it was more important to me to have uninterrupted walls than to have an extra inch or two here and there. When you see the finished product I end up with nice walls without bump outs

thanks for sharing chief, helps us all out a lot... so are those metal roof beams just glued on? Just wondering if that's the case because they potentially need to support a lot of weight from cabinets etc.
@BuildingVanLife3 жыл бұрын
No. They are structural. The glue is just connect the sheet metal of the roof to the structural beams. Also my cabinets are not connected to the ceiling. Only to the walls into the wood studs.
@bikeninja9563 жыл бұрын
@@BuildingVanLife right, so those roof beams are just glued onto the roof sheet metal.... that's what I'm saying...
@BuildingVanLife3 жыл бұрын
@@bikeninja956 it’s a structural frame. It’s holding all the sheet metal up. The glue is just there so the sheet metal doesn’t vibrate and rattle on top of the frame. The glue has nothing to do w the structure.

Did you have LED lights on any of the ceiling support beams? I have a 2020 Promaster and it came with a string of LED lights that are wired into the van and go across 2 of the support beams. I am trying to find instructions from someone who has removed them.
@BuildingVanLife2 жыл бұрын
Yes I’ve had them on some vans. You can just unplug them
@mfbsail3 жыл бұрын
So wouldn't you want to get some wiring behind those walls and insulation at one point? Curious if you could do without stripping and tap walls into metal inside frame.
@BuildingVanLife3 жыл бұрын
Wiring is done next after framing, then insulation after that.
@rangerider513 жыл бұрын
Okay you have me baffled. Don’t you have to drill holes in the support beams first before mounting them to the wood because you can’t get those screws through that medal without putting holes in the medal first, right? I’m new to this. Thanks!

If you use the screws I show they are special screws. They are self drilling screws. They go right through the metal easily. You can get the screws from Home Depot. Thanks for watching
