My first encounter with Van Dyke Brown was on the Bob Ross tv show. That was so long ago I don't remember what it looked like. Given how different the samples you have are, I'd say the paint companies have no idea either. 😂

Thank you for your interesting video! Van Dyke Brown is a colour that I still need to figure out completely, and this is very helpful. I own Maimeri Blu, which is. PBr7 and reminds me of Raw Umber, one more color that I’m only start appreciating now! Thanks

Thanks. None are "real" Van Dyke brown, nothing like the Holbein. I highly recommend the Holbein Van Dyke Brown for that special yellowish tint that Van Dyke brown should have.

I appreciate this video. I had been debating adding Daniel Smith’s VDB but I think I’ll stick to mixing my own browns from Transparent Pyrrol Orange and PB60. Makes a great variety of browns!

Thank you for this comparison. I’m new to watercolor and have been trying to figure out why my Daniel Smith van Dyke is nearly identical to my Windsor & Newton’s Sepia, all while wondering which was “correct”. This has been an interesting lesson in colors among different brand names. Guess I only need one of those, plus a burnt umber.

This time the winner is Daniel Smith. I have Roman Szmal but it is very difficult to rewet and control.

I use Daniel Smith's in my main palette along side Schmincke's Galaxy Black as my two "blacks" in my palette.

My favorite Van Dyke Browns are the ones that use the real pigment, even though it's sadly not lightfast. They're generally cooler with black undertones, and they have a unique, heavy texture. I was going to say my favorite was the PoemsAboutYou version (handmade), but I just checked, and it's actually NBk6. Otherwise, Roman Szmal's is very similar (but not as dramatic), and Shinhan PWC's I just picked up, and it has decent texture, too, but not as intense as RS. They're great for adding interest into landscape sketches in rocky areas or bark, or for worn fabric texture in illustration.

The real pigment is very nice but I don't think I'd use it due to it not being light-fast.

Interesting. I absolutely cannot stand the gritty texture of my Holbein NBr8.

I've never bought or used VanDyck brown, but I was just looking over Kremers Pigments and they listed theirs as NBr8. I prefer the White Nights out of the 4. Looks like it can be almost any shade. 🤣 TFS. 😊

I was gifted a few of Holbein tubes among which was van Dyke brown NBr8. It is a deep rich and warm brown. I suppose the White Nights displayed here is closest in hue to the original. I think I shall be using my NBr8 as a neutral pigment. However, I find it very gritty to the extent that I fear my paint brush hairs will be damaged when I scrub the paint on paper. I have yet to find extensive use of it.

I want to try the Holbein Van Dyke Brown but have always put off buying it as it’s not very lightfast. It looks like a very nice paint.

@@JayNathanWatercolor I was sure you’d have Holbein in here. I held off buying it for the same reason you did but finally ordered the small tube of it this fall and I just love the color of Holbeins natural version. I’m glad I got it, because I like trying pigments, amd I would say this one is a unique shade that’s hard to replicate, but still, I really didnt need it! Lol

If you had included Winsor & Newton vandyke brown as a fifth comparison here, that would’ve been good. That’s the one I have and I would’ve liked to have seen how it compares with the four you did

My Mijello (which I also use as a nice Burnt Umber) is just a touch cooler than my Holbein NBr8.

Nice video! It’s obvious no one knows what this should look like. I think I’ll stick with mixing my own with raw umber, burnt sienna, or oxide red, plus ultramarine.

I’ve only ever used the Windsor & Newton van dyke brown and I think it’s somewhere between the White Nights and MIjello versions. I like it but I have nothing to compare it to.

I also have the Kremer Pigment's VanDyke brown and it's so textured and granulating, it's really a lovely rich dark brown. I used to hate Van Dyke Brown, but after getting the VanGogh one it grew on me. I think it all just depends on what your expectations on the color itself are. Also, their Sepia is really good too.

I recently bought a few pigment filters and might have to use them if I purchase some of Kremer's NBr8 dry pigment.

Roman Szmal is my choice. Though difficult to rewet. I have to dig the pan to get the pigment out. Among your selection Schmincke is the weirdest. Like why would I want yellow in an earth color used for mixes.

Thank you so much for doing these simple comparisons!! They are so helpful in choosing the one that would best suit what I am looking for I also agree the Mijellow Mission Gold does look really lovely!! I can see using it in bark on trees some great deep shadows for rocks I wonder how it mixes and plays with other colours! It really has peaked my interest. Thanks again so much for sharing of your time, knowledge and experience! 🥰💞

Daniels Smith is closer to a Dark Sepia, rather than Van Dyke brown. Schminke is closer to the true Van Dyke and the other 2 are burnt Umber and not Van Dyke brown...
