His bold strokes and thick impasto, he's was simply amazing. No one can show emotion like Vincent.
@DiffEQ Жыл бұрын
No one? So all other artists are incapable of communicating emotion effectively except the ONE you claim does? If it was just a random painting in a pawn shop you would pass right by it. SMH

Sadly that the painter himself doesn't get to experience the success of his own paintings.

Smith Js I do not think he wanted that attention and notoriety, as he battled mental health issues.
@Marsbar12125 жыл бұрын
ed z He suffered from a continuum of depression. I do not think financial or personal success would have eased his poor mental health, just simply due to the fact that not much was known about the depression in the medical field during the 1890’s. Surely money could have given access to certain luxuries, but good living and deserved recognition also could have been detrimental too, as Van Gogh could have formed an addition to combat this depression. This unfortunate and sad story is often repeated by present day society.
@Marsbar12125 жыл бұрын
ed z it all depends on how you look at depression and mental illness. Is it a brain chemistry issue, external stressors factors like lifestyle and one’s childhood or a combination of both? I look at it at both and since antidepressants weren’t available as of yet, I do not see how all the money and recognition would help as you initially suggested.
@mbsm50944 жыл бұрын
If he would be still alive his artworks wouldn't be recognized as successful as they are today. Once the artist died then the art dealers can start the speculations and make the quotation explode. Because it's not about art, it's about money. Just look at these paintings. A 5 years old child can do the same, but it's not about esthetic, beauty and talent. It's about money as always.
@GLYNDYER3 жыл бұрын
Smith Js He would have. You just have to create something and it’s enough then on with the next one. You have to separate financial reward from the process of creation because that’s the true reward. Wealth only buys you material things. Don’t feel sad for Vincent Van Gogh for he achieved something not many ever do including men of wealth.

I pondered that, too: "Van Gogh became famous for doing something new & different. a type of work that was pioneering and avante gard, and helped lay the groundwork for the modern topography of the artistic endeavor. As such, his work commands astronomical prices today -- up to $100 million & higher. Further, because of their scarcity (due to the artist's death & paucity of surviving works), these works enjoy a massive supply and demand disparity. Not everyone who wants a Van Gogh can have one"

@Paul Mccall Good point and I agree. There is something about the sky that does not seem Van Gogh. And the auction houses and high end galleries are money laundering schemes anyway. Just read "12,000,000 stuffed shark" that's all you'll need know what goes on behind the scenes, the only "art" those people like is Ben on a "C" note.

It's all about the money, this line about being priceless is bunk. Allot of art from lesser known artists can found in attics, closets and basements who had tons of talent and mastery. Look at this way, he could have drew a few lines on a piece of paper that was junk in his mind and it would be worth a allot now. Oh well.

Rarity...a rare commodity in which extremely wealthy people can invest and retain wealth. Much safer and far greater return than say stock. Buy a master for 20 m today and sell for 250m in 30 years. Few things appreciate like high end art. The stock could easily be worthless in 30 years like Ford or GM. The paintings value is in its rarity.

I love some paintings from some famous painters but honestly, this looks like half dead shrubs all over the place in a kind of cloudy sky. Looks like it needs more structure and better composition and even then the subject matter and colors used are boring even if Van Gogh did paint it. For this type of painting I prefer Monet.

I have never 'got' Van Gogh. It may have been quirky in its day, but today, it is amateurish. Turner and Rembrandt are in a different league, whilst Cezanne and Degas were quirky but much more free and fluid.

his "career" what a JOKE. He made nothing, lived borrowing from his brother until he found out his brother had a child and shot himself. HE GOT NOTHING BUT MISERY his whole life. And now IT'S priceless🤮, so valuable and magnificent, where were you when he needed you? Someone used one of his paintings to patch a hole in a chicken coop, that's the respect he got in his lifetime. Living in a small room with 'PRICELESS' paintings all around him and not enough money to live. The whole art world is a big stupid joke.
@LoveLife-oo9cz Жыл бұрын
Dude, the guy dedicated himself just for painting in the last 10 years of his life. He didnt just borrow the money from his brother, he traded his skill so basically he worked for his brother. Theo said Vicent owed him nothing, because in return Theo received his paintings. The art dealer always treasures art. Vincent said in his letter and they translated to plain English "Your profession is not what brings home your weekly paycheck, your profession is what you're put here on earth to do, with such passion and such intensity." Doesn't matter if you want to put him down, he's still great in many people's mind. You are one jealous soul.

Sure there thousands of people now after studying this pictures from the artists before. But this paintings are made without books/internet/teaching. Sure they got probably inspired by other people aswell which painted before them, but its not the same like googlin now and checking every piece of art is existing. Gotta keep that in mind. Every painting is not for everyones eyes aswell. The paintings of today are not much worth as the older ones because they dont have that age and story.

First Van Gogh's work is like a diary. Overall it has to do with the story the painting convey and about the period he lived in. It's not only about technique but how one feels. Best to check his work in person to see how he expressed himself. Good Stuff.
@Garland675 жыл бұрын
I think you're grossly misunderstanding Van Gogh's significance as a painter. You just have to do some reading, see a film about him and hopefully, see his work up close in order to really understand what makes him so special. His style is extremely unique and was so revolutionary in its time that it took decades for people to appreciate it. It's about feeling nature, emotional response interpreted in paint among other things. His technique is unique in art history and now his work commands very high prices due to his relatively small output and the fact that his work is appreciated and loved by millions.
