Van Gogh has always been my favorite impressionist due to his use of colors. He wasn't trying to be dreamy or ethereal, but grounded in the things he saw immediately in front of him and the beauty of everyday people and the things they did. Sunflowers is one of those everyday things that people see but don't really "see" because they are so banal, so common. Vincent saw the beauty and painted what he saw. I think that Vincent was trying to pull himself out of a funk and was trying to "position" himself as colorful and vibrant so that he would have the community and connection he was so desperately trying to find. As desperately lonely as Vincent was, I never got that feeling in his paintings. Even with Starry Night, you would think that the heavy use of the blues would be depressing and dreary, but it is absolutely beautiful in its simplicity and composition with pops of yellow to bring a little mystery. Vincent is truly an artist for the ages. Don McClean said is correctly when he sang that Vincent was just to beautiful for this world, and he was. I always have wondered what the art world would have looked like if Vincent was around 100 years later than he was and if he could have gotten the mental health treatment that he soo desperately needed and wanted, what could he have done. It is a rather moot point but it is a great intellectual exercise.

there is no definitive proof that Vincent suffered from mental illness...try actually reading his letters like i have...over 1200 pages....and you will see a very sane man...people commit suicide for many reasons....depression..pain....addictions..etc....you betray your comment by not knowing this nor do you understand that even today...very few people suffering to such a degree...are ever helped by todays medical knowledge/

The first time i saw a painting by him, i was thirteen. It was a stormy sea and a boat. I cried. Sixty years later, i still do, whenever i look at his paintings. Its like looking at an exposed tortured soul

All I can see is people overthinking the simplest things in order to rationalize their passion to be more unique than it is.
