At the time the song came out, the record company didn't want to finance a video. The NAVY actually made the video & used the song. Great choice!

@19chucki742 жыл бұрын
One of the most inspiring songs of the 80s. The video was made in conjunction with the Blue Angels and Warner Bros. Records. The message is simple: achieving your dreams is not always gonna be easy. Those who make you cry, save those tears, they will be an example of what you've been through to get to where you are. Dreams are made through blood sweat and tears, not in that particular order. Sammy mentioned that he was inspired by the opening synth riff by Eddie to write the song, as he was now in a band with someone who upped his musicianship, so he had to up his songwriting to match what the genius was composing. It makes my heart soar every time I listen to it.

Wow!!!! What a shocker, I was about to leave my job to go to rehab n I look on my phone n it said that Eddie Van Halen had past away from Throat Cancer at the age of 65 years. Eddie was an icon n in my opinion, the Greatest Rock N Roll Guitarist of all time. Him n his brother Alex Van Halen started the group in the 70's then teamed up with Bass Player Michael Anthony & The Greatest Lead Man in Rock N Roll History, David Lee Roth n then came Sammy Hager. They had so many great hits from the 70's, 80's & 90's. The ones that I like were with David Lee Roth, Panama my favorite, then comes Jump & Jamie's Cryin. Rip Eddie Van Halen, Ur now up in Heaven's Tears playing Panama, just like ur music video flying in the air. God Bless The Van Halen Fam. Wolfgang (Son), Alex (Brother) & Valerie Bertinelli (Ex-Wife).

This album, 5150, was the first with singer Sammy Hagar after David Lee Roth left in 1985. The song "Dreams" came out just before the Blue Angels experienced a tragic accident, so the song was dedicated to the Angels. The song was originally about the spiritual aspect of romantic love.

*This song came out in '86 on the Van Halen 5150 album (1st one with Sammy Hagar in band).. I had taken 2-3 'lessons' at local airport and I used to play this as a confidence booster...* Fast Forward 10 yrs, due to bad economy I went through Oklahoma State University's aviation management BS degree program, and have been in airport management since around 2000. Ironically on KSO we have had a discussion of Airshow Music from the 80s going on ----- *Van Halen "Dreams", Steve Miller "Fly Like An Eagle" (used by the Air Force in the 1970s-80s for recruiting commercials & Thunderbirds), Loverboy "Turn Me Loose", 2-3 Gloria Estefan songs, but usually "Turn the Beat Around", Survivor "Eye of the Tiger", Neil Diamond's "Coming to America", and you always had Patriotic music like Sousa stuff, "America the Beautiful".*

I worked at a Naval Air Station for many years and we got to see the Blue Angels practice on a regular basis. Never got tired of watching them. Sadly, sometimes there were accidents and some of the airmen died. There were three music videos made for the song. The most well known version was shot in 1986 and featured the US Navy's Blue Angels performing a variety of aerial stunts with the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk.

I’m late to this video but I lived in Pensacola for two years just across the bayou from NAS. I was off work for 3 months due to surgery and I would stand in the driveway and watch them practice…they would fly right over the house and big circles on their sides just above the treetops. You NEVER get tired of it! The jets are so brilliant blue with the bright yellow US NAVY on the underside of the wings. And the noise!!! It’s been 11 years since I moved back to Indiana and I still miss them! 💙

True story... In 1986, the US Navy, offered Warner Brothers a stock footage of past 'Blue Angels' shows, with the intention to create a music video to promote both, the song and also be used as part of the US Navy recruitment program. A copy of the video was provided to MTV and VH1 and the video itself has become the classic soundtrack of our lives. Not to mention that the Navy got a lot of viewers attention that they had a record breaking prospects for the 'Blue Angels' program and quite surprising that both Warner Music and Van Halen approved the video with no cost to them and being used as a recruitment tool for younger generations instead.

(Apologies... this comment is kinda long. Just started tappin' the keys, reminiscing, and lamenting...) I grew up when Van Halen were in their heyday. Was never a big VH fan, but I was an absolute nut for things with wings, so this song was the frakkin' bomb to my teenage self. (Still is, to my middle-aged self.) I too have gone to many airshows over the years, and have seen the Blues several times. I was fortunate enough to see them a few times when they still flew the 'Scooter'... that was one of the nicknames given to the A-4 Skyhawk, the jet shown in the video. Actually, the model the Blues flew was called the 'Super Fox'... they flew the A-4F, known as the 'Foxtrot' or simply 'Fox' because it was the 'F' model. Only, their jets were souped up a bit... they had more powerful engines and weren't equipped with all the schtuff that combat-ready A-4s had... so they were lighter. The lighter weight combined with the more powerful engines meant that the 'Super Fox' was a frakkin' rocket. Hence the name. But I digress... Anyway, again, I was fortunate to see them a few times while they still flew the Scooter... it was a helluva show. The A-4 wasn't too awful fast, as in straight-line speed, but it was QUICK... nimble. That little jet could roll and turn like nobody's business. And they flew the tightest diamond in the history of history. 'Twas a joy to watch the Blues in the Scooter. Sadly, I was also unfortunate to see them at Niagara Falls in 1985 when the two solos collided during a maneuver called the Blivet. One of them was killed... and my 12-13 year-old mind had quite the time processing it all. It was a surreal experience... watching one of the jets lazily fall to Earth while in an inverted flat spin. When it hit, there was no ear-shattering explosion like you see in the movies... just a distance-delayed 'crump' and a big fireball and a ton'a smoke. Alotta folks initially thought that both pilots got out because there were two parachutes. What most, including myself at the time, did not know was that the seat had its own parachute, so that when the pilot separated from the seat after ejecting it wouldn't hit him. One guy standing close to us knew the score, though... he was in tears... an old Navy guy, he knew right away that one of them hadn't made it. I'm welling up just thinking about it now, 36 years later. That kinda thing never leaves you, I guess... 'twas the only time in my life that I witnessed another person's death. Sorry to be a downer. Anyhoo, I enjoyed your reaction here... I could see your appreciation of a few things, especially the Double Tuck Over Roll. (the synchronized roll performed by the two solos at 2:57 of your video) That's a mind-blower if you're viewing them from the right angle. Google it, you'll find a bunch of videos of them doing it in the Hornet... it's something to behold when all goes perfectly. Okay, I'll stop rambling here... later...

I nominated this song for my high school class song. Luckily, it won out over my friend Sandy’s nomination, Twist and Shout. Seemed to fit nicely with being released out into the world. And seeing as probably half the kids that went to our school lived on the Navy base, the Blue Angels tie in was a plus. Whenever they were in town for a show, our teachers would hold class outside sometimes. I can remember watching one practice from the tree in my friend Mike’s backyard.

5150, the album this song was on, is the soundtrack of my youth. I can't listen to any song on it without being overcome with nostalgia, but Dreams and Summer Nights are the best.
