Song is about his preference for a "real" girl. Home grown and down home. Poundcake is an analogy for a woman that is real and not trying to be something she's not. It's not about sex. Note the lyric "...tried a little bit of everything. But, it's all sex without love. I found the real thing is poundcake."

So true. And the thing for me was that he was recognizable with his playing. His sound changed with who was doing vocals, but it was always distinctly Eddie. Dave, Sammy, Garry. All 3 Eddie had tweaked his sound to match up with the vocalist, but you could always tell it was him playing.

Eddie was frequently spotted around my hometown of Shreveport, La (of all places) back in the 1980s. He met Valerie Bertinelli backstage at a concert here in 1980. Her family was living here as her father was a “big wheel” in General Motors, which had a manufacturing facility here at the time. After they married they would frequently return for visits.

I was so excited when my son took me to a Van Halen-Hagar concert. My one goal: how did Eddie make the sound in Poundcake? It was a cordless drill against his guitar! Thank you Eddie for coloring my life!
@shawnlusby1538
@shawnlusby1538 4 жыл бұрын
Mr. Big actually did the electric drill thing first on their song "Daddy, Brother, Lover, and Your Little Boy ( The Electric Drill Song)" from their second album "Lean Into It." It's the first song on the album. That album was released in March 1991 while Van Halen's "F.U.C.K." album (For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge) was released in June 1991. "Poundcake" was the first song on that album too. Eddie does a fantastic job employing the electric drill as a 🎸 guitar pick in this song but it does seem like he got the idea from Mr. Big's lead 🎸 guitar player Paul Gilbert. You should do a reaction to that song Jamel. Mr. Big is a very underappreciated band here in the states ( they were huge in Japan!). They have many great rock songs in spite of their two biggest hits here in America being ballads ( To Be With You and Just Take My ❤ Heart). Also, and obviously this didn't get nowhere as much attention, but they lost a band member recently too. Drummer Pat Torpey passed away in 2017. He was right around the same age as Eddie Van Halen and both bands are from Southern California( Van Halen from Pasadena and Mr. Big from L.A.). Also, ironically enough, founding member and bassist of Mr. Big Billy Sheehan also played in David Lee Roth's band before he formed Mr. Big. A lot of connections between these two bands!

@jamel - THANK YOU SOO MUCH FOR DOING THIS REACTION VIDEO! I requested you do this a few months ago. I listened to EVH when I was growing up and still do to this day. When he died, a part of me died. I mourn for his family, the band and, I am 1 among many in the world who are mourning. A TRUE VIRTUOSO in our time. Thank you for what you do, by keeping great music alive

Yes it has been a really rough year and just when we think it hasn't gotten any rougher something like this happens and it throws us even further down if that's even possible. But I got to thank you for keeping us sane and keeping a smile on our faces.

I’m still friends with one of my teachers from school, I graduated in 1992, turned me onto your KZbin channel, telling me, “this guy reminds me of YOU so much. Y’all talk exactly the same way, y’all have the same sense of humour. This is your doppelgänger.” Which is the GREATEST compliment I’ve ever been given. Love your videos, bud. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

I love love love this channel. Experiencing the music we grew up on for the first time all over again, through his eyes. Sitting here in anticipation of another moment when EVH shows he wasn't of this world, and the resulting Stank Face or Mind Blown reaction. Priceless...

@6:48, THAT is what made Eddie Van Halen such a special guitarist. He inserts that perfect, easy to play melody all by his lonesome, and damn if it isn't my favorite moment in the song.

Top of the World live, in my opinion, is the pinnacle of Van Halen. I dig the older stuff, for sure, but this song, this performance, brings out the best. Hagar, Eddie, Alex and Mike in top form. Always makes my smile when I hear this song.

Actually pound cake wasn’t about any part of the female anatomy. Sammy did an interview with Kurt Loder from VH1. Sam explained that it’s about the type of woman he prefers. Meaning she’s plain, clean and simple. Not too hard to figure out, not covered up with a bunch of stuff, she just is what she is and he decided to call it pound cake. All of the sexual innuendo was just optics for the video......

This is one of those songs that not only has the guitar sound effects, but the lyrics actually describe how the best experience is with the person you love at home. Deeper than what you would expect given the tone and imagery of the video.

Thankyou Jamel for showing this version of VH. Eddie loved both Sammy and David Lee. Thank God we have the music to carry on. Alot of people including me are still pretty shocked, eventhough Eddie was sick for a decade. Van Halen was a band from our teenage years so to lose someone so innovative and aspiring , it makes us question our own mortality. RIP EDDIE.🎸🎸❤

I started playing guitar because of Eddie over 30 years ago. I never imagined death of someone I've never met could hit me so hard. I've seen several iterations of Van Halen multiple times in concert. Ed's solo was ALWAYS the highlight of the entire concert. You should absolutely check out Best of Both Worlds off the 5150 album. It is a phenomenal song with a great message.
