I bought a 15 year old van. Took out the seats and bought a twin mattress. Sleeping bag. Hit the road, and I make it up every day as I go. Best advice. Just Do it.

I wanted to start car camping/overlanding. Got the rig all setup... but was afraid to actually do it. Had a friend berate me (in a good way) and basically talked me into just sleeping in the driveway one night. Then went on a weekend trip with friends. Then spent two weeks out. Then a month. So on and so forth. What ended up happening is that I got addicted to being out and I dont want to go back. It is life changing, but in the best way possible.

Absolutely! No one will make you make it an all or nothing thing except yourself. I kept my apartment for the first 6 months. I slept my first night in the parking lot. Over five years since I let go of my apartment, for me, there's been no regrets.

First step. Insulate. Never know what your temps will be. Four season proof. Minimum. Otherwise it will rain inside. Tint windows or black them out. Learn how to STEALTH CAMP. All the information you presented here has been what I've been thinking about. I'm a senior woman in a small car and 2 dogs. I've practiced sleeping in my car and while doing so, made copious notes on what needed to be better. I'm very close to being ready. I'm hoping by May I'll do my 1st solo trip with my dogs to the GC. I really appreciate this video. Fear is a real inhibitor. I lost my husband in 2020 we camped together for 40 years. Now at 76 I started setting up my sienna. I would be so much more comfortable if I had someone to caravan with. The idea of meet ups sounds perfect to get comfortable and make friends .

Small steps is key. We sold our house and got a big camper , 34ft . We stayed in a camp ground that is year round for 500 per month, utilities included. Even doing that it is a step in the right direction.

I used to have 34 and 25 foot trailers and rented a 1/3 acre lot in Oregon for $450 a month. Water/sewer was $130 a month minimum. I now live in Costa Rica in a 7 bed/5 bath house with 4 car garage on 23 acres paying $153 a month rent. My water/Sewer/trash is $6 a month, my electricity $12 to $15. Internert $12, Cellphone $4. National Health Catre that pays 100% costs $65 a month for self and wife. A hwell of a lot better than the $170 a month for 80% coverage with Medicare my first month retired. My biggest fear with an RV was having a break down when moving. And that happened when hit by a semi in a heavy rain. Coulkd not identify the truck and that is why I rented the lot for 9 years. Great video! I have suffered anxiety driving more than 1/2 hour from my house by myself due to some past trauma I have really been working on this for years and I recently drove 2 hours by myself. I have never been so proud of myself for that. It has always been a reason I didn't think I could nomad life. Now I know I will be able to do it!

Do you know that the day I bought my RV at the dealership and told the salesman I was leaving that day to drive RT 66, he actually told me he “hoped I had a gun with me.” What a vote of confidence! The day after buying the RV I started out. Returned home 6 weeks later. I learned a lot on the way. But FEAR a was never an issue…..I always play the “so what if?” Game. What if I have a flat tire? Okay then this will happen. What if I get lost, breakdown, get sick???? I go over the whole scenario until the end. It’s called life. I just live it.

Been in my van for 2 years now. It really is true freedom. My biggest suggestion is have a reserve fund for unexpected break downs. It does happen but you shouldn't fear it. The vanlife community is very friendly and many are very willing to help others in need if you find yourself struggling.

Winston Churchill said when asked what is success....to go from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm. When I decided just over 4 years ago to retire (58 at the time) sell the condo and get a Promaster Cargo Van, I was also really apprehensive. It was just so much easier and safer to continue doing what I was doing and earning a paycheck in the process. Long story short, I followed though because life is more than just work, work , bought the van , fixed it up and have now travelled the western side of the country from the west coast to TX and straight up to SD and ND and all the states in between. Every year do I travel a rectangular block starting in the south and ending in the south again. Best decision I've made in years. Not everything is fun and games for sure but at the very least do I feel that I'm getting some life out of life. We have the most wonderful parks and historical places to visit and visit again.

Your points about natural disasters was spot on. I live in Florida, and every year we spend most of June buying hurricane supplies, packing up stuff we can just grab and go, and making evacuation plans for the season. It's tiring, and meanwhile we have to worry if we even have a house to come home to. It'd be GREAT to just start the van/rv, and get outta dodge, with our mobile home in tact. I've been wanting to live the rv life for a very long while. I travel quite a bit already, because I have a roaming spirit. I'm finally trying to conquer my fear, stop neing so attached to my "stuff", and start selling some of it off, packing up for a small storage unit, and gonna sell the house and get a rig. Thanks, Bob. You've been an enormous influence for the 8yrs of me dreaming about the nomadic lifestyle. Gonna actually do it now. ❤️

As a senior, one of my biggest fears would be if I had a health emergency while out in the wilderness. I have some health issues and, along with my age (73) and my wife's reluctance to make the move, we have decided to stay in our sticks and bricks for now. I love your videos Bob, and have been a follower of yours for quite some time. We have a compact SUV that I could convert in no time should the unthinkable happen and I suddenly found myself alone. I love camping, having been doing so every summer since I was only 9 weeks old, as my parents were great outdoors enthusiasts.

@Buck Jones have you watched any of the sad videos of how many people are getting the knock and being told to move on even when you are parked legally. we are being forced to BLM land for which i am thankful to have. But one tuber said it got to the point where he had a fake sign made for his van just to be left alone. I know from where I live they are really cracking down in the San Diego area. They are putting signs up everywhere that says you can only park in public streets between the hours of 11pm and 5 am. Before you start out, please investigate these videos. It will be heartbreaking impunity what should be a new beginning.

I was 70 when I bought my first RV and went on the road working remote. I felt safer in my RV and in the campgrounds where I stayed then I did in some of the areas that I worked and walked in in the cities where I lived. I learned you have to trust your gut and use common sense. If a place doesn't feel right don't stay there. I'm met amazing people on the road and I found for the most part the people you meet on the road and in campgrounds are trying to have a peaceful life and get away from all this stress and craziness everywhere else. Fear to me is staying where you are and being unhappy or uncomfortable and stressed. I had to sell my RV because of medical issues at the time but By next Spring, I plan to have a new (to me) camper van, which will be easier to get around than the larger class C that I had before, and plan to work independently remote and travel this beautiful country!! and Bob it was your videos and a couple message you sent me that gave me the courage to do it the first time. Best time of my life...thanks!

I started my nomad life in August 2020. Brand new travel trailer and I’m in the mountains of Colorado north west of Fort Collins. I spent three nights in the trailer the second night I had a bear at the door which was really cool that fourth day I went down to Fort Collins to get food. By the time I got back a Fire had started near me. They wouldn’t let me to my camper and all of my worldly possessions. I slept in my pick up truck on the side of the mountain road talking with the authorities daily. On the fourth day, they escorted me to my camper going in the back way. The fire was only a half mile away from the camper. It was a very interesting way to start nomad life. And I survived.

As a person with sketchy health, that is really my biggest fear. If I'm alone in a remote area and fall, or get seriously ill, what then? I have been an outdoor, self-sufficient woman my whole life. So many of the fears you've mentioned are not an issue with me. It is the picture I have in my head of being immobile, needing physical help and not being able to get it. And echoes in my head of my family and friends saying, SEE??? Lol. Does anyone else struggle with this fear?

Health will improve in many ways, diet will include far less fast and processed food,les screen time on the couch , more fresh air..will be out of your new and normally smaller living space getting in tune with oneself in nature as we did pre computer, tv..with remote and maybe 8 channels until signing off air for the night.. reading more books, hiking, camp maintenance, more interpersonal communication and actually meeting other free born souls, a supportive community ..most helping a stranger far quicker than most family or friends...the ones thinking we are the insane ones for choosing to live the short life we are born into living in America and visiting the places the rats in the American Scheme...always saying..."man I'd love to"or " one day before I die id like to" ...while at home living to work.. enviously watching your new travel channel .. trying to figure how to see such beauty with the 7 days a year "vacation" after requesting permission to have a measly week per year excused from the daily commute to the same dang door leading to their security and daily grind working 240 days same ol sheeyat required to uphold their proper societal abnorms consuming at least 43% of the slave wages on rent, mortgage, utilities alone before fuel, car and home insurance,cable , home and vehicle maintenance, and chow depletes the remaining income.most already sick of the house they pay on 25/40 years ...most dying long before paying off and life's savings towards desired destinations now spent by spouses new spouse. Few may live at least to or couple years past retirement and bucket list scratched off unable to hike Yellowstone (out running that bison) skydiving with fake kneecaps, shoulders, or the dang hoverchair. Viagra now useless as a screen door on a submarine...balls now do hang low or sagging teets rubbing waistline. Meds making the sun intolerable and bikini useless as teets on a boar hog. Plenty of time to chill" securely" when having depends soiled arse cleaned by strangers, fed with a slingshot in hospice . Grandpa spent 43 years in GM plant the other 46 years in a papermill...1st Dead 11 months into retirement, the other 34 months and my dad died this past June 23 months after retirement. Not I McFly!!!! I'm breaking the cycle at 49 yrs of age . And my family and friends think I'm the insane one.. technically I am with MRDD and extreme PTSD and constant anxiety..yet they still haven't realized they are the fools far more mental than I Society Norms are the calling of capitalist agenda. This rats outta that race.. I'll take my cheese fresh...keep the elusive moldy cheese y'all hope to win one day. I strive to roll my doobies while living in that van down by the river....lake..ocean shores I'm toking near or at. Fear dying...not living ✌️🍄🚐⌛

Things that really helped me feel more comfortable: 1) Tint & Window covers. 2) Focus on Stealth over function. Basically, there’s no reason to bother a car that looks like a car. 3) Preparation. Have a plan for Getting Sick, Using the bathroom, Breakdowns, Police, Breakins, Hot/Cold extreme weather, Where to park. 4) Find a way to sleep laying down. Sleeping in the driver seat works for a little while, but it’s a huge difference to be able to lay down and STRETCH out. If you sleep in the driver’s seat, taking off your shoes can lead to dirty or wet socks/feet. It’s also not really comfortable. If you have all three figured out, I’ve been able to sleep in the parking lot of a busy down town gas station and slept like a baby. I’ve been sleeping in my car (Various models) since college. Decades ago. Covid really threw a wrench into sleeping in the car with everything closing so I went with diaper wipes.

It is difficult when those who you love so dearly and love you as much, are afraid for you. They may not understand the attraction or even look down on the life style. That is common. You may have your own fears. Let them know this is really important to you and you want to try it. They will likely have a rebuttal. You can acknowledge their concerns, but you have done a lot of research and this is something you ARE going to try. You know there will be bumps in the road and you have tried to prepare for them. None of this may work with them, but you will know you you have done what you could, in a calm and mature manner.

For me, it’s incredible watching the growth and evolution of VanLife-styles here on KZbin. I’ve been living and vagabonding in a variety of RV’s (and raised a family) starting back in 1971. Yep, over 50 years of no rent or mortgage. Being a performing solo-musician allowed us to travel wherever we wanted to go, and I would get work in-house at resorts, and would often be there for a few years, so we weren’t traveling constantly…. Living on Faith, Grace, and Gratitude… Happy Trails!

I like our option. We have a small self built underground house near the Great Lakes and Canada. We also have traveled extensively much of our adult lives, spending 5 months or so in various other locales, hot springs, mountains, ocean beaches. We garden in season and enjoy it. One of my favorite mantras is "do it afraid"... sometimes I just go ahead and start something even with fears lingering. 99% of the time, the experience is far easier and more rewarding than I could have imagined. Success in the experience gives my brain the proof that it possible!

Not being handy is a tough one. Almost forces me to need to buy everything new. A challenge. Repairs can add up and cost a fortune if done by experts. Need to figure out how to keep receiving physical mail is another one. Got to have a physical address to renew drivers license, keep auto insurance etc. Probably need a physical address for Medicare and VA benefits. Will do it anyway but these things need to be addressed more often.

In the car camping/backpacking/bike-packing world, there is a term “packing your fear”, which basically means over-prepping & packing for every contingency (aka, trying to pack your entire house in a backpack/car/trailer, etc). Faced with not being able to feasibly do that, hard choices are made. But eventually you realize you don’t necessarily need everything you think you do. At the same time, you realize that you might need things/skills/methods that you didn’t need in a brick & mortar house. Unless life dictates otherwise, ease into it with shorter trips with more amenities and moving to longer ones with fewer amenities. My family totally freaked out when I told them I was going to start camping solo. After a few short weekend trips at local state parks, they lost that fear (and so did I). Those trips eventually migrated to longer ones and more remote ones. Their fears (and mine) have diminished quite a bit. Am I ready to nomad F/T? No. Not ready to give up my career and home-base at my age. I might do it when I retire, but that will also be a decision with my husband who probably won’t want to do it given his history (unwilling nomad for many years).

The money thing (and break downs) is the tough thing, for those who have to move soon and are poor seniors! A lot cannot take on jobs. Will have to start out without much of an emergency fund, and have vehicles that aren't in really good shape.

Yep the fear is natural. I’m feeling it right now as I’ve sold or tossed all my possessions except a few things I’m taking with me such as my tools and guitar. I remodeled my home and is for sale. I’m buying a f-250 and a northern lite slide in camper and I’m going. This is my gift to me for my 60th birthday.

The one that sticks with me is the fear of breaking down. Right now I'm working and living in my class B. I had a major breakdown one Christmas Eve. It took 2 months for it to be fixed. Thankfully, I had a local church family, and the mechanic was fine with me staying in it while working on it. Bob's video on 'camping out' in a U-Haul truck has relieved that fear for the future.

I think one of the biggest obstacles for me has been just being overwhelmed with all that needs to be done, the process of selling each and every item in my house, $5 for this, $15 for that, all the emails and calls and not wanting to give out my address to strangers to come check out the sofa, etc. I don’t feel attached to my stuff, but the process of getting rid of it all piece by piece … I just feel overwhelmed. Secondly, what about when I’m too old to do this anymore? Perhaps too old to drive? Or health issues require staying put in a certain city? My house mortgage is 3.75%. Friends have said in todays economy, I’d be foolish to give that up, but I don’t want to be a landlord.

Just an idea ... but.. how about closing up the house and having the mail held and leaving for two weeks to a month? See what you think? See how you feel. I don't have a rig yet but when I get one that is what I plan to do. Just put things on 'pause' and head out. Or at least that is my tentative plan. :) I sell on ebay part time and I can understand your trepidation about all those little things as I feel the same way. On top of that I know a lot of people sell on Marketplace but I don't want people coming to my house as I live alone. In life there will always be roadblocks and there will always be options. Usually somewhere in the middle is what fits.

I woukd suggestbhaving an Estate Sale. Put as much in 1 or 2 rooms or the garage to sell. Have a few people at your home during the sale. For the larger items, take 1 person back at a time to look at them. In your ad for the estate sale, tell them they need to come with cash, their own lifting help & a vehicle/trailer to take the item(s) they buy. Whatever doesnt sell, donate it & there are charities that will pick up your larger items for free by scheduling it, except most don't take mattresses for health reasons. Someone suggested to go on a month trip as a test, thats a good idea too just to get started 😊👍🙏 Good luck.

I would love to be a nomad! Your advice is excellent and psychologists would completely agree. I realized while watching this video is: How would I keep my five cats safe and happy in a van??? (I also have two dogs, but they’re easy.) So, still watching your video, I opened my Amazon app and searched “portable large cat enclosures” and now I’m not fearful anymore. It would be a big change for them, but I think they would love being outside. It would be a lot of work for me, as I have chronic pain and can’t move well, but I’d probably have lots of help! ❤

Bob I met you two years ago in Scaddin Wash. I had prepared and watched your videos. I was in an Altima with house battery, mobile solar panels, bucket, inverter, and had the best time. One thing that worked for me was learning how to use and set up my gear before getting on the road. This included setting up my propane shower unit, cooking gear and my mobile GPS alert device ( in reach with a prepaid 12 month subscription). By the time I got on the road, I was confident that I would be successful.

I make sure I am safe wherever I go. I have a dog, knives, a gun (trained to use it). But first and foremost, I use my intuition. If it feels off I don't argue it away, I always listen to it. I have been to multiple countries and 49 states in America (can't drive to Hawaii) and never an issue I couldn't handle.I recommended this lifestyle to anyone who is at all interested 😊. I've been a nomad for 7 years already, my biggest fear used to be breaking down in the middle of nowhere. Somehow I overcome that, now the fear I have after 7 years, is the new member in my family which is a cat. I always travel with dogs without a problem. But I had to rescue a cat from my sick and old uncle. I've been rescuing dogs and cats for over ten years now, I guess I could easily find a home for this cat. But......... There is a huge butt here........... I always wanted to travel with cats, but I was always afraid of losing them. Long story short I like cats better than dogs, I want to keep this one. But I really need to overcome my fear of having a cat on the road. Well first of all I'm a sucker for cats, but this one is special because he used to belong to my uncle. You make some great points! It’s actually safer now than 35 years ago to be a Nomad. Back when I started only communication was good old landlines and CB’s. Now not only are Smartphones out there you can get a job using those phones while being a Nomad! Last few years I did stop and get a home base for health and economy reasons I admit. Now getting SS so got an old mini van and wishing for a small older trailer to haul if I can dredge up the cash. I trusted in a higher power years ago and made a leap of faith. Time to do so again. We get so attached to possessions that we forget that they become chains in our lives as far as importance. At the same time so much to see and learn outside of them . At 66 I have my fears traveling alone. But most of them have insinuated themselves from Others. Relatives, Society tells us “ go out there and something Bad will happen”😂. Well in the 30 years I did what is now being called a “ Nomad” I had the time of my life. Sometimes it was hard yes but then even “safely “ in your brick and mortar hard times happen. And I think my relatives secretly are jealous of my freedom.

I rent it to hunters during season. I live in my Van about 7 months of the year. Between Social Security, and rental income l clear about 35K. Not much but, l live cheap and love it.

It's natural to be afraid to go from a 2 or 3 bedroom home or apartment and go to a vehicle. My husband and I have been living in a 30 ft bus for over 2 years and we love it. We're fortunate to have an acre of land and I've been very sick the past 2 years and I've had 3 major abdominal surgeries so unfortunately traveling is not an option right now. We live off grid and we live in a small town an hour from Vegas and the wind here is incredible sometimes and our whole neighborhood will lose power, but we're sitting pretty with our solar set up. We have 1250 watts and 720 amp hours of lithium ion batteries so we can use anything we want day or not . When you decide to begin a nomadic life you have to decide what's the most important thing for you. For us it was a powerful solar system. It was expensive, but we used our stimulus checks to help pay for it. I'm so glad we built a powerful solar system because it's made it so comfortable to live here and that's been incredibly important since I've been sick. This was a last minute decision for us so when we moved into the bus we had no solar or plumbing literally just a bed and a bucket for you know what. Over the past 2 years we've added little by little, but the solar was the first big investment. I think people sometimes watch videos and see all the fancy stuff other people have and they think that's what they need to get started and that so not true. We started with $60 batteries from Walmart and 2 solar panels and it was enough to charge our devices and lights and ti have our fridge one for several hours a day. Luckily it was November 2020 when we moved into our bus so it was really cold in the desert until March so the food stayed cold. People that aren't familiar with the desert don't realize how cold it gets in the winter. It can get down into the teens at night. If someone ever needs a place to park for a week or so they are welcome to park on our property.

By far, The most important message/video from Bob .... van-life is a possible and liveable way of life, even if many municipalities do not support it. Fear is a positive thing because it drives us into planning! I am preparing for van-life in my due retirement and the Only fear I have to get over is how to find parking in Northern Europe in small towns. I build my life around the gym, buying water and electricity from the gym, obtaining a relatively new vehicle, spending on a good insulation and heating system, and saving on no-build setting. I can afford a weekend at camping sites for recharging batteries and laundry. Please do go ahead and read Bob’s book from the 2010s about van-life - a book which is still very relevant to our days. This book will slowly shed off all the fear from you. Very recommended!

I have a van, but I have a stick built, also. I bought the van for more room for my 3 dogs. I have it fixed up as a no-build. I would have no problem being forced to live in it. However, the fear I have is it breaking down on the road, as it gave me mechanical problems right from the get-go. Although I have a wonderful mechanic, I am fearful of even going to the corner store 2 miles away.

It’s been 2 weeks since I made a huge leap of faith, in myself and in my CAR/V creation, opting in a choice to live differently…and boldly and coldly taking an early plunge into the polar depths of temperature, as it is still somewhat colder in weather here in The Heartland..🌻…and the overall experience?…is still a bit scary…lol…But, as each day passes, so does the scary. Every turn of the wheel makes one stronger, and it is very important to ignore those naysayers and doomsdayers, and believe in oneself, regardless of age, younger or older of days, or younger or older in heart…lol. We get stronger as each day passes, as well, and we learn so much, as so many will soon know. To believe in oneself is a scary proposition, and with it comes responsibility in oneself and in a faith in oneself, but with each challenge met and each problem solved, a new idea to improve the roll is also discovered, through it all, and we become better, wiser and bolder, as well as older, and most importantly, becoming less colder, especially in heart and mind. Life is scary, if your let it be, but it keeps going, just as we all do, regardless…..and our journey continues, as well. Thanks for all you do, Santa VanMan, reminding us that we matter, and have worth and substance, regardless of age and such, and there is truly a special seasoning in getting older, like a fine wine, or some aged cheese….lol….of which I partake in neither, anymore…lol. No the video wasn't too long it was just absolutely perfect I do experience some of those fears. However I do have some camping experience. So I made the decision to do baby steps and just go locally a few times till I gain some confidence. I'm slowly building a no-build camper shell on the back of my F-150 2005 truck. So far I found a bed an end table and I bought a chair and I'm going to buy one piece of equipment each week till I have it all-- got a fishing trip to go on in May. I found this particular video especially reassuring I will probably watch it many times.

Bob well thought out video! It’s funny that anyone would think of you as a cult. I’ve watched so many of your videos I’d like to think of you as a friend. I know we’re strangers but knowing your story and how you became a nomad makes me feel like I know you or at least know what you’re about like helping people etc. fear is a great subject. I used to love going on trips but now that I’m alone that’s a different story. I guess since I’ve had to live myself just the thought of taking off has been on my mind lately. I kinda feel like I need someone to travel with me. Maybe do what you said about taking small trips might help me overcome anxiety or talk to someone like you mentioned. I’d rather be a doer than just sit here wondering how to take that 1st step. I’ve racked my brain trying to figure out how I could earn money if I had to pay for a repair on my car. I’m not broke and I still have options. This phobia of fear that you mentioned I can truly relate to it. I’ve had some extenuating circumstances that I would never put on social media because I don’t think anybody would understand nor would I want to share it. It would have to be in person with someone I trust. Like a small group of friends. I don’t want anybody to feel sorry for me. I just want to get over this fear which is paralyzing. Great video! Loved the solutions for the fears. One of my biggest fears that wasn’t discussed is my fear of how will I keep my meds and health intact. I have to store meds in a climate controlled environment…so I get anxious just thinking about how I’d need to have an AC running or dehumidifier all the time in a rig I’d have.

Really good video and topic Bob. When I first started living in my car I had the biggest fear of getting the dreaded knock. Well, I got it and after the second or third time the police knocked and woke me up, I no longer had the fear. The officers were only doing a wellness check and we chatted a bit. They realized that I wasn't a threat nor in any real danger and now they just drive by and don't bother me. I'm stuck in one town for the time being due to work, so I often sleep in the same spots. The other fear I have still is getting broken into while sleeping. Yeah I have wheels and can move, as I've done in the past when the situation called for it, but I'm sleeping in the back of my car and usually the front driver side windows are the ones to get broken first.... right where I need to be to drive away. I now keep bear spray handy. You're right when you say you have to imagine yourself in different situations so you can figure out possible ways to protect yourself and your belongings.

Bob, you have been such an inspiration to me. I just purchased a travel trailer and will start my journey on the road at the end of April. Your tips and how-to videos have made this possible for me, and I am so looking forward to being able to travel year around.

I try to have enough o everything to last for 2 weeks. Then when it,s time to move I restock on my way to my next destination. This really helps me to keep within a budget. Money for me is my biggest fear even though God has gotten me thru thus far.
