I was driving home yesterday from a three day (snowy) Sequoia backpack trip and my girlfriend started talking about how cool it would be to get a van and just take off. I told her about this stud rock climber who does just that and gave her the Honnold story. Good timing to see this clip today. Might be a sign.

Have you ever wondered what it's like to live in a van? Where do you store things? How do you stay powered? What do you do when you need to use a bathroom? Professional rock climber, Alex Honnold, takes us through the van that he calls home.
@silverjay5710 жыл бұрын
Since you have to lay diagonally in the bed to sleep anyway. Is there a way to install anchors in the roof and you can string up a hammock? I have seen that on some other van life projects. (Just a thought for you)

Thank you for the video .love the setup that you've done to your van :) I have a question if you don't mind Which is better a Van or an SUV, in regards of (security wise, camping , traveling, space "for bed , storage, cooking...etc", mileage, gas usage , rough roads) ?

A Carbon Monoxide detector needs to be mounted much higher up. It rises so by the time that thing goes off the van will be almost full of it. IE you won't wake up. You need it on the ceiling.
@yobringitondown556510 жыл бұрын
Actually it is relatively the same density. Convection mixes the gases within the enclosed space and combustion byproducts like CO generally rise due to HEATING, like his stove, not by being a less dense compound. Two sensors are better than one! :) One high, one low. Also one could fail and he would not know, he just would not wake up.

I cant see working 8-12 hours a day and going to the gym for couple of hours and returning to a apartment at 600-700 (Cheap one) dollars a month to sleep. Things that rattle my head are urban stealth yet camp ground fun. Don't want the police knocking on the door asking for doughnuts before the sun comes up if you know what I mean. Now that I see what wonders you're able to do with such a tight space, I ask myself what you could do with a larger area in a big bus! Read Ken Kesey's, Electric Kool Aid Acid Test, if you get a chance. Now that was a bus trip (no pun intended) and a half and boy were they ever creative.

I've watched Goal Zero's van life video series with Alex, Brittany, Jonathan, Travis...Pretty cool. But living in High Sierra bear country, I'm still trying to figure out how to customize a rig, and not have it smell like food/kitchen. It seems these would be the first rigs that bears target in Yosemite or Mammoth. Perhaps a stripper version of the kitchen is preferred. Any thoughts?

How do you cook safely in the van? as far as ventilation goes?
@Bayplaces10 жыл бұрын
co2 detector and a vent helps.
@kearress73509 жыл бұрын
Eric Hightower As well as a sliding door!
@Bayplaces9 жыл бұрын
definitely. my van has a slider and it helps to crack it, I feel that I can get more air than if I had cracked open french doors. an improvised screen can be drawn across either if fully open and still desiring privacy, but typically just a window is enough if a vent isn't installed. vent helps in the rain.
