Today we take a look at the Jackery 500 all-in-one lithium battery system which turns a-out to be one of the best ways to get into a Lithium battery system. It has a 43 amp-hour Lithium battery and can be charged directly by a solar panel (I also got a Jackery Solar Panel)

Bought mine a few weeks ago when it was $399 and got a discount on the solar panel too! Was able to afford this very simple to use power station as we camped out last weekend. I’m 69 years young with some arthritis my hands and this was an easy solution for me. The Jackery was light enough to be picked up to move out of the shade. We have a Coleman cooler that took 56 watts (?) and we got a steady 42 watts from the solar. I did disconnect it at night. No regrets whatsoever in my purchase! Thanks, Bob, for giving it your approval as my husband didn’t like the price but i finagled it by saying it was for past anniversaries and birthdays as we usually don’t give each other gifts, lol!

Bob gave great advice. To compare this is my story doing a solar van build out. A custom DIY will be physically twice the size of one Jackery 500. You have to mount it to a board and in hind sight I would have bought two Jackery 500’s since they are plug and go. I wanted to learn how to build solar and budget was not a factor. My DIY... 100 amp hour Battle Born lithium ion battery ($950), solar charge controller ($150), 2000 watt inverter ($360), two 100 watt solar panels ($210) and wiring ($60). Overkill for my needs to run a compressor fridge and various other items but I never have to worry about power and I learned something. Thanks to Bob and our community for sharing their journeys with the world. Jackery is just one option as there are other manufacturers along with DIY, Do It Yourself 🥳

I just bought both the Jackery 500 and 100w solar panel a couple weeks ago. I received the solar panel a few days ago and the Jackery yesterday. I charged it up last night, first using the solar panel and then finishing the charge from a wall socket in the house. My wife gave me a hair cut this morning and plugged the hair clippers into the Jackery and now I know at least I'll be able to get a hair cut while on the road. lol Oh, and thanks to you, I now know I'll be able to eat pizza (if I get that portable oven you used).

Thanks Bob for the review, I'm leaning on going with the Jackery setup, the only negative I've seen in the Amazon descriptions though is the solar panels are not waterproof. Not really sure what that means, certainly the unit itself would not be waterproof, but if a afternoon thunderstorm came through and ruined the solar panels, that could be quite expensive, and might create a worry if you're out and about away from camp

I started using an EcoFlow River lithium power station a few years ago and it was a game changer. It runs my 12v fridge in a pinch and I use 50 watt folding solar panels to charge it. It powers all of my electronics day in and day out. It allows me to reserve my house batteries mostly for the fridge. Stumbled on a new "open box" unit on eBay a few months ago for $150 and jumped on that. Now I have the luxury of having two. One in use and one charging all the time and I never run out of power. Works like a dream and no regrets at all.

Lots of the folks I follow have gotten complimentary units and hopefully, are giving honest feedback to viewers. Maybe other brands could step up and send their units for real-life evaluations too. Bob -- thanks for the review. Your points of comparison with other options, both lithium and AGM seem to be generally fair and on point. However, the heads-up comparison with BattleBorn doesn't take into account the huge difference in cycle life between the two. While BB is designed to have a cycle life of 3000, the Jackery is listed at at least 500 -- quite a difference, you might agree. Also, at that point the BB should have at least 75% of it's nominal capacity left (you don't have to replace it). Jackery doesn't say what you can expect to have at end-of-lifespan. The proper price comparisons are done comparing total Kwh for the lifespan of each battery/system. Only then should the extra costs, if any, of included components be reckoned. (There are a precious few cheap plug-and-play charger/inverter/controller units out there that play nicely with drop-in lithium batteries.)
@JackeryInc
@JackeryInc 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, how many capacities left varies and depends on how you use it. Use it every day or use it occasionally may have a different result. But normally, there will be 70% left after the cycle life.

Some devices are not able to be used while charging but these devices state that they can be used while plugged in, I ran chargers and wall wart power blocks while cruising down the highway. There are several good brands and models of these power stations, just shop carefully and don't buy the cheapest. If it is in your budget, you really can't go wrong. I live in Hawaii and these can't be shipped easily so I had it delivered to the area I was traveling to and then left it with a friend, hopefully he is using it.

These are good for trips, part-timers and very low electric consumption people. The two weaknesses I see are: 1. It may last a day under moderate use 2. it takes so long to recharge that there will be times you have no power. It only accepts 100 watts of solar and that's not enough. One day of no sun and it is game over.

Are are you talking about they're smaller version? because I really don't think the 500 is doing this.

@@julien2912 PER their website: 16 hours in full sun to charge via solar. Most of America gets under 5 sun hours a day so you are looking at 3 to 4 days to charge. Throw in a rain day or an overcast day and you very well could be running out of power on day 4 or 5. I see people using enough power that they will need to have this thing charging every day with very little downtime. What happens if you have plans and can't babysit your solar all day. People can walk off with portable solar. Do you risk theft or fall behind on charging. Extreme example: The Inverter can run a laptop for about 1 day and then you need days of solar to recharge. It is no good for this unless you have access to house power(AC) to quick charge. To be clear: my personal reservations on these products are 1. I can realistically see how easily solar charging can fall behind consumption and lead to powerless recharge days 2. the AC Inverter is 500 watts and that is super limiting. No cooking or Coffee, lol. If you are in a situation where you can AC charge when needed or are a low power user I think these are simple and great. If you are out boon-docking for weeks at a time, this may not be enough.

everyone wants it but no one wants to pay the price. my research I did on power stations, made me to purchase a goalzero 1000 lithium. as a base line. and a mmtt plug in moduale along with a cigarette charger for starters.

@@harleyhawk7959 I don't want one, lol. Fortunately I have a decent 24v Tesla system with lots of solar but I do get the appeal others have...... personally All I see are the limitations.....sometimes to a fault.

I can charge my Jackery 240 directly off my fuse panel. I just chopped one of plugs I don't use and insert the correct end into the Jackery. Works great.

I just got the smaller one. I think it was 200w. The legs on the back of the solar panel would be nice. The smaller one does not have any. The 200w works great. I"m very happy with it. But this bigger one sure would have been better. Jackery is a great purchase. The best thing I bought for my summer travels.Just make sure you get it out in the sun first thing in the moring, 6am and by 3 or 4 it should be ready for another day.

Bob, going back through your videos and watched this one. Doing a LOL as we are from the same era in that you still call the charge ports in vehicles cigarette lighters. I don't believe there has been an actual lighter in a vehicle for 20+ years. 😂😂😂

That simple practical answer to "will this run my 12v fridge?" was wonderful. Lots of people try to be too precise, but there are just too many variables: temperature, time of year, latitude, angle of the panel, weather. Your rough estimate based on actual experience is so valuable, thank you! I wonder if that "only use 80%" rule applies to the Jackery? I'm familiar with the Battle Born batteries only from having watched many of their videos, and I know they are designed to have 100 usable amp hours, the battery is actually a bit bigger than that, but has a safety shut off. Maybe I'll have to track down the Jackery manual and see what it has to say, or ask customer support.

I have a CPAP and I don't think this will work. While it would likely last the night, it doesn't recharge fast enough. Could take 3 days to get battery back up in full sunshine, and if you have clouds, rain etc....even longer.

Picked up the Jackery 500 for $362 yesterday on an Amazon sale plus a coupon. Really looking forward to running it through its paces with a 100w renogy panel.

Very nice , however I’m staying with my goal zero 1400. Mainly because I can recharge it in 3 hour using their 25 amp fast charger and my Honda EU2200I. Jackery is good for the weekend camp trips only that usually consist of checking in around 3pm Friday and out by 1pm Sunday. I strongly recommend People pay attention to the recharge rate when choosing any lithium battery or AGM battery again the recharge rate.
