I have visited the Icefields many times. The first time was when I was a child in the early 1960's when the glacier was almost all the way down toward the road. Back then we traveled in half tracks vehicles that looked like army tanks. They would stop over the large crevasses and we could look down 50 to 100 feet into the glacier. The Glacier is much smaller now.

I am not sure what your plans are for returning, but I have a few recommendations. 1. Continue driving through to BC and check out Vancouver and Victoria areas. Then continue down through the USA (Glacial National Park on the USA side is beautiful, too). 2. If you go back down through AB, don't forget to hit up Drumheller.

You will have to come to the East Coast next time. The Atlantic Provinces offer different but just as incredible landscapes and outdoor activities. There’s tons of hiking, you can explore the Bay of Fundy, go whale watching, deep sea fishing, play in the Atlantic Ocean, see icebergs in Newfoundland, drive the Cape Breton Highlands in Nova Scotia, hike the Fundy Trail and visit the sea caves in New Brunswick, enjoy beautiful beaches and traditional lobster dinners on Prince Edward Island…I could go on for days. We also have innumerable festivals celebrating our diverse populations and you’ll meet some of the kindest folks on the planet. Have I sold you on it yet?

Beautiful. You’ve seen more than I, a Canadian, has. Wonderful to see through your eyes. The bus thing with the 5 foot wheels that took you to the glacier actually did have an accident, rolled down the side of the mountain, awhile ago so not always safe. There was death 😢. Glad you guys were safe.

We went up to the Summit last year with my 3 year old, and I wore my 10 month old on my back. It was so rewarding to get to the top, good for you! Your last few videos (I know I'm behind) have made me tear up so much because it was the best summer of my life visiting the same areas. The Icefields Parkway is to die for, and I dream of the day when I can visit again. Thank you, once again, for your incredible videography to capture the beauty of the mountains. We also liked Morraine Lake better, and there weren't red chairs at the summit last year either!! lol

Another great video! And did this bring back memories for me! I did your itinerary back in 1981. The difference was the skywalk was not built yet and the red chair concept did not yet exist. But I want to make a comment about the glacier. I was shocked to see how much the glacier has receded since I was there 42 years ago! For those who refuse to believe in climate change, they need to come to the Athabasca Glacier.

I'm so glad you experienced our glacier, it's wonderful isn't it? The stunted trees that you passed on the way up is actually an ancient forest, stunted from the harsh climate. It's sad that it's melting so fast, in the late 60s or early 70s I remember my parents drove us passed the Glacier and it was right up to the highway. Don't forget to visit Athabasca falls just ouside of jasper, it's magnificent and free. The CN train station in Jasper is in use but is a historic and very beautiful to visit and the old steam train is parked outside; also free to wander in. Jasper also has a museum which is pretty cool. Watch for bear and elk. The elk like to stay in town.

My father (born 1925) told me that when he was your age the glacier came out to nearly the highway. I was there in the 1970s and it was about halfway towards the highway from where it appears to be now, close enough that I didn't have to take a bus to get the (much smaller then) glacier bus. Not sure how long it will be before it is gone but in not that long of a time you can see how much it has receded. So glad you got to see it.

Yeah, I just started to need to turn on a light for my 0530 breakfast... still quite a bit of light as the day "should" end though. I also love that several times this video the "tour guide" sounded like they were Aussies... in Canada. Remember Altitude Sickness is a real thing. The higher you go the harder it is to breathe. So hiking at altitude... less simple.

Great video. Many years ago, I spent about 17 months over three deployments in Antarctica flying ski-equipped aircraft. I even landed on a glacier and visited the South Pole numerous times. (Actually in some respects, all of the ice-covered parts, which is most of the continent, is a glacier.) The tricky part is to stay on the flat areas which is generally free of crevasses.🥶 The whole experience was a blast.
