#vanlife security, it's important and not something to be taken lightly! Unfortunately, break-ins are common for many who travel in campervans/motorhomes/RVs etc... as most people are aware that people travelling will have goods with them, which might be valuable to a thief (when we were broken into in 2014 they even stole my make-up!). Check out our video where we talk about:
- Reolink CCTV - geni.us/blA4R
- Car Lock Tracker - geni.us/UUh7tD
- Wheel lock - geni.us/Ryys
- and many more!

6:08 A friend of mine got towed one day in Portugal. The parking lot he was towed from is a known trapping area for foreigners. He found out after talking to some locals. He never contacted the towing company but instead called his camper van which had a gps tracker installed. It reported located the next town over at some industrial estate. He hitched a ride to the place the gps reported and found his van on the yard of a towing company. He scoped out the area very thoroughly, making sure no camera's were present and noticed the yard had no guard on duty in the evening, a single camera was at the office building where clients collecting their vehicle. The camera was installed in the building to see who was ringing the doorbell so an employee of the company could remotely open the door to the yard. The main gate to the yard had a magnetic loop inbedded in the concrete which sensed a vehicle waiting in front of it. The gate would open automatically so the vehicle could leave the yard. My friend waited until the yard went quiet and he was able to climb the fence unseen, walk up to his own van, start it and drive it to the automatic gate which opened without delay. He got away and was able to enjoy his time in Portugal without any issues. Several weeks past without any word from either the towing company or law enforcement until he tried to leave Portugal. He was stopped by border patrol for a routine check and that's when the border agents found the police report the van had been "stolen" several weeks prior. The tow company had filled a stolen vehicle report after discovering the van was gone thinking it had been stolen. My friend told agents he found his van gone fro the parking lot he left it, and was able to track it down using the gps tracker. He told police he went to the reported place to find out the van was towed by some tow company and found it sitting at the towing company's office not mentioning he actually jumped the fence or the automatic opening gate. He was asked to wait while the local police figured out who actually owned the van which was of course my friend. After a couple of hours it was clear who owned the van and my friend was free to leave. The police officer doing the investigation said he could not be prosecuted for theft of anything you actually owned. Though the tow company claimed somebody must have had gained entry illegally to the tow yard the company could not prove who did, how or when. Any lean placed on the van by the tow company could not be enforced by police since the police can only intervene in criminal matters. Since no crime was committed (as far as could be proven or even established) the police wouldn't be involved and the investigation was closed. Goes to show, whatever the details of the situation may be, it is tactically always a plus to know exactly where your vehicle is even though others may not want you to know... Guess what what I got and build in my van after hearing this extraordinary tale of raw justice...

Some of these have already been mentioned reading the comments below but ...number 4 was all my own work!haha 😉 1. Hidden switch that’s fitted inline with the fuel pump power supply ..easy flick on and off in hidden spot. 2. Disk/steering wheel lock 3. Use multiple roof vents/skylights rather than side windows...loose some natural light but definite gain in security. 4. For a cheapish outdoor cctv system thats waterproof and quick fit/not always needed, even easier if you have a roof rack or roof bars is a wildlife trail camera. Bushnell are a great make but any will do really. 1080p, waterproof, has a sensor that only records if movement detected so great on bat life, works in the pitch black with IR ...definitely a great hack in my opinion 👍🏼👍🏼

To leave your front windows open for fresh air, take your seatbelt and threaded through the armrest and then attach the connector into the seatbelt harness piece. Then pull the seatbelt up tightly from where it enters the side of the van. People can stick your hand in and unlock the door but can’t enter from the door

Don't know when you're going to Canada but DO NOT lock your doors so they are not possible to unlock. This is because customs will want to know what's inside if they can't get in. They are allowed to use reasonable force to do so or they are allowed to impound it until it is unlocked (I think they can also charge you for the storage whilst impounded though different countries have different powers). Put the key in a security sealed container and leave a note on the door to let customs know how to get hold of the key.

So stoked you’re coming to Canada, I hope we all collectively show you the best parts of our country! Part of the issue as I see it, based on our time in a van (part two starting this summer!), is that our vans so often look like contractor vans...full of yummy tools and valuable equipment, it attracts attention of that small but slimy part of the population. We left talk radio or podcasts softly playing in the van occasionally if we were away from it a bit.

When cruising the Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico counties with Key West as my base, I had a pair of solar powered motion activated lights mounted on each side of the mast 4 ft above the deck. Another was mounted on the boom rest facing astern. This woke me up several times that I saw another boat go away without lights. Bad guys??? You could mount these one above every door that even when you come back to your van at night, you would feel safer with a light to get into the van. Also that when somebody else gets near your van????

I remember your break in. What everybody dreads, apart from going home on the plane. It wasn't for you anyway. You've got your land. In 2 weeks, I'm going to my land in Cyprus. There's a house but it's already 30 years old and cracking. The tenants moved out so no electricity and water when I get there but I've got a space blanket. And a sleeping bag. No wife, no kids, just memories of better times. I want to sell it and buy a camper van. That's my dream. Great stuff on Alaska but was it your dream? You're great with what you've got and remember, these are your best days. Make everyone count.

Happy Hippie dad drilled a hole through the metal down the side of the door inserted a bolt with washers through then a nut on the inside then he used to drop the loose chain into the side pocket on the door and this kept it out of the way but accessible.. also I saw a great tip for locking the sliding doors if you’re leaving the van, very simple, with the side door shut you drill a hole through the runner top edge and fit one of the round type locks, so even if they get the door open it won’t slide because of the lock.. believe it or not but in France a thief took a knife and cut the rubber removing the triangle window in the drivers door in an attempt to breakin to the van my dad and his mate where asleep inside at the time

As always, a great video, and helpful tips. Naughty naughty! Taking pictures of police (depending on circumstances) was made illegal by a 2015 "Citizens' Security Law" the purpose was to protect police officers and their families from harassment. I believe this was supposed to stop TV channels showing the faces of the police in high profile arrests, and to stop any backlash that may occur. It's a grey area, and now all the police say "under no circumstances can you film them" I don't think general policing was intended to be covered by this law, but they use it anyway, and God help you if you don't adhere to it. Sorry this is a bit long, but it may help other readers going to Spain. Good luck in Canada and the USA

The slam locks are useless if someone breaks or cuts open your window. The steering wheel lock is useless. It can be defeated in a minute. You need to get a floor safe and have it bolted down or welded to your floor. Thieves are not going to waste too much time trying to get that thing open. You are most concerned about the valuables in that safe. Everything else can be replaced through insurance.
@Tracy-zj4sr
@Tracy-zj4sr 4 жыл бұрын
I completely understand having a CC camera to keep an eye on any animals, as well as a blue tooth thermometer (perhaps even more important when leaving a live animal in a closed vehicle). But as a security device, it seems a bit useless. Triggered by motion, you would get an alert if someone had broken into your van, certainly. But as most vehicle ransacks last literally one to five minutes, the thief would be long gone by the time you could return to the van unless you were mere feet away.

I think it would be great to build some of these items into the van during the build out process. Makes it harder for thieves to see/get to. Secret cupboards, cameras, etc. If I was to live in your van alone, I would chain the door handles together so they are impossible to physically open, along with jimmy up a cabin box system so even if they smash the windows, they couldn’t get into the cab itself. Finally I would chain the sliding door on the inside so it would be impossible to slide open. I’m all about those locks and chains 😂 If you’re driving through Alberta, please please please let us know - meet up!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Security is one area I worry about ( I even worry about your security). I've been looking forward to this video. I have a secure lockable box and steering lock and also a sort of panic alarm siren that we can activate. I've seen pedal locks and handbrake locks and people turning and locking the drivers seat but in reality are you going to put those on just to nip into the supermarket. So CCTV and phone alerts make sense. Great video.

On any windows in the back of the van have a piece of 2×2 inch steel mesh on the inside of each window. If it's painted/powder coated black first it's quite discrete especially if you back windiws are tinted and you don't really notice it from inside but no one can then break a window and climb in. A thought that i had though, if you make the living area of your van more secure make sure it doen't stop you getting out in a hurry if there's an emergancy.

I have to look into this camera. We use a lockbox too and have insurance on our possessions. If they want to get inside there is always a way, for us it is making it very difficult for them to take stuff. You learn from your mistakes as you have undoubtedly shown.

Thanks for another great video. I really enjoyed it. I'm thinking that a decal on the side of the van saying someting like "Caution: Venomous Snake Transport" might deter inquisitive snoopers. Maybe make the decal removable somehow, so you could choose when to deploy it. Let me know what you think. Safe Travels

Magnet stickers with different decals is what I plan to use on my Ford Transit box car moving van stealth camper I am building. That way you can remove or replace them any time you want to.

good idea! “animal transport van” or just a sign that says “warning - toxic materials” is probably pretty good as well!

Actually, the device you mentioned will be removed by the garage people because for most kinds of work they have to do they need the OBD port to connect their device to check parameters of your car. But for the travel time across the Atlantic, it's a fine idea to have it.

FYI Wheel locks don't work, takes 5 to 10 seconds to cut the whee,l not the lock and slide it off the wheel! A brake peddle lock that hooks to the steering column is better for automatics because they can't get it in gear or start the motor! But all your other stuff is really good! Like you say it's better to have multiple things that make them think twice about it!

Get really crafty and put a cctv camera or even two in vegetation outside the van overlooking the van you could even make your own tree stump on a spike with a cleverly concealed camera within, with room for a battery pack.

Initially gutted and for sure you were the best... Let's face it you have lived off grid for the last 5 yrs and have matured a lot faster than most your age . But then I really believed you might have been torn as you love Potugal and your land ! And your travels where ever, when ever with whom ever ( meeting up with similar van lifers). It could of stifled you without initially realising it. I've lost interest in the programme now... as I can't get my head round one couple if they shine during one challenge then that's done and dusted...didn't they read anything about your background before hand? Excited to share your travels through Canada... I leave in August to live off grid in a beautiful part of Ontario. Happy travels . You guys also make me giggle so much , great sense of humour...I'm from the Wirral so appreciate it lol Andy xxx

Thank you so much for this post guys, (and many others that I've found a great help),since following you around 6mths ago I am now an avid watcher, this is due to a number of reasons, I'm converting a van, your skill level is around the same as mine, and you seem like very approachable and down to earth people (although with a bottomless wallet) ;-) a couple of questions if you have the time, does the kitchen leave cooking smells in the van and does your fridge create any excessive heat into the driving area. Thanks again for the time and enjoyment you give to us.

I grew up on a farm and we had these bird blasters which was shotgun load without the pellets and set to fire off every 30 minutes in the corn fields. I had a few left with a ton of rounds so that is what I use during the night when I am sleeping. I set it up on the roof and it fires every 30 minutes so if anyone is snoopy around they are run off in a hurry when it fires a round. So good for pesty animals that come looking to eat you in the night and those lousy crooks.

Hi you two. Out of all the contestants you had the perfect qualities and experience. But heyho I know you were upset at the time but having visited Canada for the last 10 years I’ve experienced 40 degrees in summer with mossies eating me from 8pm and minus 40 degrees in winter with snow that lasts up to 6 months..24/7 365 in the middle of nowhere phew.. would have taken some doing. I’m more than happy with my month in Canada and 6 months on the Algarve. ( don’t forget your mossie nets for your next adventure)

Such a shame you guys didn't get up there. Out of all the couples you guys where probably where most ideal for it. Still young and financially it seems you are sorted already so no worries there. Would of been great watching you guys do it as well. Security wise those solar pir house lights fitted with stick on magnets are great stuck on the sides of the van when you're parked up. People will think twice about getting close to your van

So sad... but keep in mind you still can travel the world and won’t be in 1 place as isolated as oc-mountain would be... enjoy your travels. I stopped for a while, because my dad past away and have a stick and bricks now, but will keep my lovely Zelda and she will escort me on every time we can travel Europe. Need to extend my online work and who knows... but for you guys enjoy Canada, USA, Central America and for the best part South America.... I fell in love with Colombia, take your time to explore the countries if you can... and see your adventures....

BBC editing on the program intro gave it away as we saw both Pete & Jayne on Sunday and Tina & Chris in the OSI plane last week. I am gutted you did not get through to even see Osi mountain. You 2 guys were perfect to take on the Homestead and the Owners have missed a trick. You should at least drive to Alaska in the Van and then go see it for yourselves I'm sure you would be welcome guests to the Winners.

Fit internal trackers to your electronic equipment if you want but better still store data and photographs on cloud on the internet or a small memory card or stick and just buy cheap second hand electronics that do the job, even buy some non working electronic stuff cheap and hide the good stuff.
