My favorite artists! I had no idea there was a Vasari-like compendium that highlighted the Flemish, Dutch and German arts that I - and many others - so admire. Thank you!

Part of me was so excited to hear about this book and wanted an equivalent. But then I thought about the likelihood of these biographies being accurate - truly portraying the person's life... The knowledge we do have is still meaningful, but I doubt the intimate, meaningful details I'd want to know would be included. It's still a cool idea. Eta: I appreciated the hot edit at the video's end (where the Smarthistory logo eclipsed the book's title). 😌

Hi , just wondering why belgium isn't mentioned.

Now that is a complex question! Van Mander was indeed Flemish but had fled to the northern states long before the publication of this book. In art history, the term Netherlandish includes Flemish art and does not refer only to the modern nation of The Netherlands (even though that seems odd). Netherlandish studies can even include work that comes from parts of the modern states of Germany and France.
