Hi everyone! Thank you for all your kind comments and support! It means a lot! I have gotten questions about what we are up to now, and what happened to the van. Well, first we went on a few great trips ( Switzerland, France, Spain, Italy, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia) and then we sold it. But only because I wanted to build a new van! I am currently (June 2024) building this new van, so if you are interested, follow me on instagram to see what I'm up to! instagram.com/nienke_borgman/ And if you want to see more of my work, visit my architecture website: www.studionb.nl

*Newly Updated Safety Suggestions; I just happened to see your channel, and others similar channels recently, and I think that you, and others sharing their actual reality, and some have expressed some of the up, and down sides to van, RV, or vehicle living. Although, I just noticed your KZbin channel, and other similar channels, displaying van living. I just wanted to remind everyone to Aware Be of your surroundings and Alert, I just posted this anyway to help anyone who may benefit from these suggestions I believe that it is very helpful, and beneficial to others who may be thinking about this type of living without actually thinking through, about the some of the realistic problems that could occur with vehicle or van living etc... People need to know what up sides there are, as well as some of the down sides of vehicle living. I believe this channel, and other channels have been informative to others, including myself. Although, I am NOT living in a vehicle or anything like this. I feel that you , and others KZbinrs sharing this with your viewers will be very helpful. I wish you ALL the Best with your traveling endeavors. I shared this with several other travelers, as I watched their KZbin channel for the first time, as yours, and I shared with them this information that may be helpful to you as well to others. Therefore, I would also like to suggest a few Safety tips, and items that may help you, or others in your viewing audience. Although, you may have knowledge of this already, I am not sure, so I hope this will be helpful to you, others or someone. *Keep a Extra working cellphone with you or in your vehicle. You can purchase inexpensive phone with a very low monthly price between 25, 35, 45, dollars a month with unlimited data and text, and some have Nationwide coverage Do your research for the best fit for you Carry Several Extra portable phone chargers, and cables. Consider theses items: *Mini portable power charging station. I have also seen outdoor portable solar powered power stations, that can be recharged from sunlight this may be very useful to have, to power your devices. *Invest in a Cellular signal booster for outdoor use, and camping situations to boost or amplify your cell signal and reception. Consider also the purchase of a WiFi signal booster to also boost your WiFi signal. Research to see what you prefer. *Very Inportant: Invest in a SOS distress electronic signal device, this a kind of device can send out a distress signal with your exact location. There are various types of these devices, and including devices that can be used when boating, or camping situations. *Some have emergency Strobe lights SOS signaling with location alerts, and location updates that can be sent to your family, and emergency first responders. Some can be synchronized with your smart watch or phone. There are some satellite SOS texting messaging, locator devices that will send messages with your phone even if there isn’t any cellular signal, or WiFi. With this device your can still text, and communicate with others in a emergency satellite transmission. Check online, for various emergency SOS products, some are small to fit in the palm of your hand. You can check online, and on Amazon, research what SOS devices will be a good fit for you. *Mini portable vehicle battery jumper charger *vehicle battery jumper cables *Vehicle Jumper cables *Keep a Fire extinguisher handy Smoke detectors and Carbon monoxide detectors can be helpful *Mounted Dashboard camera front and rear possibly. Exterior vehicle cameras Interior vehicle cameras *Flashlights or pluggin spotlights *Portable spotlights, and lanterns Keep a few whistles around with you, and in your vehicle possibly in your vehicle’s center console *A set of long range 2 way radios, walkie talkies, to communicate with others during trips, some have 100 mile radius keep for emergencies. Use your own discretion regarding the use of any weapons. Don’t forget to bring Bear Spray Pepper spray Where is allowed If you own a drone you can use it to survey your area for animals etc. However, Please Be Safe and Beware of your Surroundings. Stay Alert, and Be Safe even when stopping at Rest stops, Truck Stops, and conducting your various tasks. Keep in often contact with your family, friends etc. Keep up with the latest Weather Updates, beware and prepare for unexpected Weather events and conditions. Keep your vehicle gas filled Don’t chance your Safety by running your vehicle fuel or gas too close to Empty. Fill it up anyway, it will save you alot of time, and headache later on. Remember to keep up on routine maintenance, check your tires for wear, keep up with your fluids for your vehicle, like oil levels, washer fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze. Remember Because you are on the road riding for sometimes very long distances, and long periods of time, I would suggest investing in 2 sets of tires, and a spare, the extra set to rotate. Check the mileage ratings on your tires they all very. Conduct visual inspections of your tires often, check for damage, wearing, air pressure, etc Keep a pressure gauge to check your tires pressure and a tire pump. Keep towing, road assistance, hazard insurance to Be Safe if you ever need it for a vehicle break down. It Doesn’t cost much try to get National coverage if available, or where you will be traveling. Keep Extra financing, and savings for any unexpected issues, vehicle repairs, and overnight stays, in a emergency or if you need to rest indoors. Keep Enjoying Yourself, Keep Enjoying the outdoors, and Nature Just..Please continue to Be Positive, Safe, and Alert.. Wishing Success, Well-being and Happiness You All. The lack of a window on the wall by the bed is a bit claustrophobic. Two vent-windows in the ceiling and a window on the door, there seems to be too little daylight. But that's just my opinion or impression of the film. In fact, it may be different. Anyway, beautiful, minimalist interior. Way to go.

Also as an architect, I agree. Incredibly pragmatic and outcome oriented planning. I don't think I've seen a van conversion that fits so much functionality while still appearing open and roomy.
@deborahcurtis1385 Жыл бұрын
It is excellent but clearly they are using this for weekends rather than full time living which requires different functionalities. So the storage space has been sacrificed along with depth in bench tops. Also the very straight angles and lack of depth in the couch space would be an issue for me it's too much like being in a waiting room or a change room. Where do you put your clothes and shoes? You could solve some of it with slide-out-and-up bench extensions. For their purpose it's so creative and I love the adoption of hight tech and sensible solutions like the water recycling UV treatment and the use of pool paint. It meets their brief visually and functionally including to keep it simple and unrestricted but it's definitely not for full time living.

Just looked through a tonne of van tours and you have hit a high level of aesthetic here. I'd call it Scandi, and it's well done. Your sketch shows angled walls but it does not look so obvious in real life, and is very clever.

I hope you are ignoring the ones that say "you should have put in more windows" or "I hate the Murphy bed" or "why is the kitchen in the back?" Simple answer to any of these questions is that this design works for the two of you and that is ALL that matters. Personally, if you ever offered scale drawings of this design, along with a materials list, and a diagram or two for electrical and plumbing, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. Congrats and kudos to you both for this incredible DIY build. I only wish I was half so brilliant and capable! I hope you have amazing travels in this beautiful design that is all that it needs to be and nothing more for YOU, regardless of what anyone else thinks..

Why is the 'im in a van' vibe a problem? I don't get it. If you don't want to be in a van, don't be? This design is really clever, but there's so little windows. You could be in one of these pod hotels in Japan. Isn't the charm of van life about being in nature?

@PennyLester I've seen at least one today where there was a lock-able partion between cab and living space so... On the other hand, the front window lets in an enormous amount of light. Perhaps the best solution is a harmonica style wall that can be locked in colder seasons but folded in spring and summer during the day.

I can't count how many times I've been absorbed watching this. There are dozens of van videos out there, but I keep coming back to yours... no doubt that is because your solutions to fitting all of your required features for van life are done - not just practically - but with flair and style. You have 'ticked my boxes' - including a murphy bed, a decent closet, comfortable seating, and a pass-through to the cab. Your attention to detail is remarkable, right from inception. Adding that angle changed the whole concept from utilitarian to elan. Everything is clean - spotlessly so - and finished carefully. It does look to me, though, that this isn't the van to live in full-time... probably not enough storage for everyday living. I hope I'm wrong! If there were one thing I would do, were I to emulate your concept, it would be to have an electric water heater, as it is smaller... that would free up more storage at the rear. And, I'd go one step further, because I'd also want to keep that bathroom... although, while I'd have the toilet where you have it located I'd store it in its own 'nook', sitting on a slide-out so that the 'wasted' area above it could be made into storage space accessible from the rear. The bathroom would still function with a decent shower stall, just a little more compact. I do hope you have many lovely years of enjoyment in it after all your hard work! Make us some videos of your adventures....
@NBorgman Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words! I did consider most of the things you're talking about but opted for other solutions in the end, because there were some down sides to those options as well. This was what worked best for us:). Also for us there is more than enough storage space (and we have travelled in it for several months is a row).

I agree with you. Even in houses I never understood tons of huge windows. I'd place the few windows I would have strategically where it counts. My eyes can see the views out of small windows for light and air. I can always go outside. And fewer windows save on heating and cooling and the expense of building.
@Southamericangirl422 ай бұрын
@stephenbrickwood1602 Yes to fossil fuel! Gas cooking is delightful and I just detest the fact that in the EUSSR we're being forced to go electric when it's so expensive. As for the windows - sunlight shining through them is a mood booster. The Dutch are known to be grumpy during cold seasons. The sun streaming in through her rooftop window was a lovely sight. Light coming in through windows also opens up a space. However, I really do think this van is a very, very pleasant result of ingenuity and I'd definitely buy it. Chapeau to the young architect!
@Southamericangirl422 ай бұрын
@NoteFromSELF For houses they now have all kinds of smart isolation materials and types of window glass that help keep cold out. I live five minutes away from a very large body of water that I can observe from my living-room. It freezes over at times. Our small home of 742 sq ft or 69m² has floor-to-ceiling windows, yet, I have rarely had the heating on in winter. And, when the heater in the kitchen is switched on it warms up the living-room as well. I have a semi open floor plan to where I can see about half of the kitchen from the couch. At any rate, I learned the windows are made of a particular kind of glass that's energy efficient. Given their size, that's comforting.

About the only change I’d want is an incinerator toilet so I wouldn’t have to deal with cassettes or a black tank. I've been fulltiming in Sprinter vans the last 11 years and you're incorporated several features I've used or planned for my next conversion. The most important takeaway for me was the linearity concept. I may be able to use that. Congratulations on incredible attention to detail.

Brilliant, genius, absolutely perfect. You should win an international award for this design. Thank you for sharing

That must have been so complicated and expensive to build!

It’s a rectangular box. How complicated can it really be?

This is it! I've been looking van design alternatives on youtube for 6 months and tons of different videos and that's it. That's the one i've been looking for and only one that place kitchen backside of the van for maximum space and minimum plumbing. Less plumbing, less wiring minimal design and lot's of emtpy space for other stuff. Thank's for insprations for van build.

This is literally on of the best designed, best thought of, and best looking van home i've ever seen. Hats off, really great work!

This is by far the best van design I've ever seen. The fact that there's open space near the entrance instead of a big kitchen cabinet sells the place. The kitchen itself is a bit tiny, namely the prep space, but the fact that you've managed to squeeze a shower and toilet, a small wardrobe all that in the back of the van is incredible. For some people it's a sacrifice of the back doors which is essential for views, but to me the smart use of the space replaces that. You could use more windows, but overall, what a great van conversion.

I love Murphy beds, beds are so huge and take up so much room. All that linen and pillows are such an American thing.

that has to be the best layout I have seen ever in one of those vans ,,, I take my hat off to the designer

Great design, Congrats! Altough you have a couple of cons: water tank outside = it may freeze in winter time, not so much storage space (no trunk), wheel structure in the side of the shower (does it really bother when showering?), it is exclusivly only for 2 people (may not be that important). Everything else is brilliant. I would like your comments on these points.

Best build I’ve ever seen. So elegant amd functional. Outstanding. Your taste aligns with my own. Also, even your video is the most elegant I’ve seen, and I’ve watched many dozens of vids on van builds. Congrats on your talent and sensibility.

Such a beautiful calm and practical design. I love the lighting strips at the bottom of the kitchen cabinets making them float and the appearance of more space.

A well thought out layout. This isn't the only area of brilliance, the design choice from colour, lighting and multi-purpose items clearly shows how you are a innovative top designer.

Can you pls show more of this van design? I've watched tons of van tour videos like other viewers, and I totally agree this is probably the best van design I've ever seen. ❤ Would love to see a day in the life in this van too, if that's possible!

Wow...simply, WOW! By far the most brilliant van design I have ever seen. So many clever ideas and well planned use of space. You created an open feel, without compromising functionality. And the finish is next level! You have changed the game....many builders will be taking ideas from your innovation for years to come. Well done. I look forward to seeing your next creation.

Wow I think this is the most unique design I've seen, and probably the most spacious. Very minimalist whilst still being functional and asthetically pleasing. The only thing i feel like it could benefit from is another window down the back, but it makes sense why there isn't, given the design and the stealthiness of it. And perhaps more storage if living in the van full time. Very well done indeed.

Chapeau! Super!

all of this in a ducato? I am so beyond impressed. also very neat idea, to use an angle, I am not usually a minimalist in any way, but when the space is limited having less visible clutter is important even for adhd ppl like me.
