I'll be more than happy to give Giles my money once I'm confident the MTDI will give me the performance and mileage that I'd like. The AHU converted car I drove awhile back was electronically controlled and awesome, but I just don't want to deal with VW electronics. I want my car to be dead reliable so I can feel confident driving to, let's say, Alaska. Looking forward to having you visit the farm! You might even want to take a look around the "gateway to the Columbia River Gorge" before continuing south.

Cool. The performance will satisfy you, definitely. Ill take you for a ride or even let you drive this thing and youll see. For economy, i get 30 to 35 all the time, and i still dont even have an intercooler. I have a feeling once you check mine out youll be ready to get an MTDI. Ill message you at your website when i know for sure when im coming

Where are you running the coolant hose that is connected to the transmission side of the head? Spotted at about 2:50. Thanks.
@jtlachappelle7 жыл бұрын
Its in the original factory location, factory routing, goes down and to the right, sort of under the fuel filter. The AHU is identical to the original 1.6NA as far as all of that goes, coolant flange locations, mounting brackets, etc. Or, what did you mean?
@baldynamnam7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! That is what I mean't yeah. I'm working on an mTDI conversion and still figuring out some misc items. One of those items is where to run that coolant outlet since the eTDI routes it to the EGR, which has been removed. Thanks.
@jtlachappelle7 жыл бұрын
Wait...so i take it the van youre converting isnt a factory diesel, its a gas van? In that case you wont have the original aluminum coolant flange like i have, but im sure you can use the factory TDI plastic flange and route the hose like i did. Thing is i think i remember that flange not having the right sensors, but if youve got the skills to undertake this conversion youre on top of all that anyway.
@baldynamnam7 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a gas van. I have the aluminum flange too. On the gas vans the main inlet and outlet coolant hoses are on the passenger side of the engine compartment and the only other hoses that leave the engine compartment are for the heater circuit, which is why I was curious where your hose from the engine head was going. Thanks!

Hey great video I was just wondering what turbo are you using i have a ahu engine and I don't want the Hassel of wiring so could you use a diesel pump off the aaz engine the TD engine

K03 turbo. Not sure about the pump question, call Giles at Performance Diesel, he knows everything

Hi, Nice conversion, whats the comparison of power from the mTdi and older 1.9 td AAZ?? i run the older 1.9 td because like you say the simplicity is what i love about it, I'm also not a big fan of electronics, alot of good info here thanks for your time and info, so another sub here
@jtlachappelle6 жыл бұрын
Cool. I understand that the AAZ is not direct injection, so its around 15% less efficient/powerful than the direct injection AHU right off the bat, plus whatever other improvements the next generation AHU presumably has over the AAZ, like higher injection pressure and who knows what else. Generally diesel tech improves over time with each generation, so the rule would be to go with as modern a motor as possible until complexity makes it impractical. As far as i know the AHU is the most modern motor thats still easy to put in a vanagon. But theres a ton of discussion out there on that....lots of reading

Hello it,I've been planning an mtdi swap for some time. I'm ready to proceed but would love to see one in the flesh before starting. I live near Portland, Or, would it be possible to meet you and your mtdi Vanagon?

Let me know the day and time (roughly) you'll be coming through and I could feed you. We're a small farm so it would probably involve some local meat + our veggies, if you're into that sort of thing. Or I could order out for pizza:^) We're not far from the Portland Metro area so it wouldn't add much to your trip. Thanks for offering and I hope it works out. Not having access to a functioning MTDI has been one of the things holding me back from pulling the trigger on my project. You can contact me through our website - dancingrootsfarm.com

.....and you just have to spend the money on a new pump from Giles, or from Karl if hes got any. Worth every penny. Supposedly theres the option of running the Land Rover pump, but that requires the research and i think a little modification, id just spend the money on the turnkey, known quantity pump from Giles.
@akdivision47b886 жыл бұрын
So the difference from tdi and m-tdi is in the fuel pump??
@jtlachappelle6 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. You just delete everything that’s electronically run, go with the original factory diesel vanagon configuration, which is a few sensor wires and a throttle cable, as you saw

@travisterrell37307 жыл бұрын
Do you have the pump model that is required for an AHU M-tdi?
@jtlachappelle7 жыл бұрын
Well, apparently Karls pumps were for Cummins 4BT motors, and everyone says the pumps for the Land Rover 300TDI motors can be used too, but the problem is they both require at least some modification to work, beats me exactly what. As far as I know there is no true bolt on production pump you can just go buy...you have to get one thats been modded, preferably by someone reputable like Karl or Giles.
@jtlachappelle7 жыл бұрын
So unless you want to find one of those pumps off one of those motors and figure out how to mod it yourself, youre going to have to get one from Karl, if hes still making them, or Giles. Its going to cost you at least $1200, but its totally worth it. Both guys are impeccable.

How many HP ?
@jtlachappelle5 жыл бұрын
Its not the HP you want, its the torque. HP, probably around 110. Torque, id bet around 175? Thats with no intercooler, at 13lbs max boost. Very mild tuning right now. I could add an IC and up the boost, way more power and economy

Just buy pump from European AAZ 1.9TD 75hp
@jtlachappelle4 жыл бұрын
Interesting, but youd have to do some serious research to be 100% sure it would be compatible / adequate for the AHU TDI. The fueling is what I wonder about...you say that 1.9 is 75hp? Well AHUs are like 110 stock, and most guys mod them and push even more fuel. What exact car/motor would that pump come from?
