People that are commenting about the "crab abuse" they were going to eat the crab anyway and he's only four years old, he doesn't know any better. So how is that torture? It is just a crab, crabs get killed everyday, by humans and other animals. Misha is a good father and letting his son learn, at this stage in life (being four and all) you do not know much about life, I did the same thing when I was younger and I am defiantly not the only one.

I love Misha so much! He is so funny and an amazing human being. While I too am opposed to animal cruelty and come from an animal loving family, what West did was completely innocent. He was just learning... it's what children do. There's a big difference between children who simply poke and prod (and potentially hurt) an animal while learning about it and children who hurt animals with no remorse (and therefore need help). Children will do these things, its part of the learning process. And honestly, what West did is far less brutal than what the crab probably experiences every day in the wild. It's not much different than spraying a wasp or roach with bug spray. And let's not forget, this crab survived (compared to those many bugs a lot of you making judgments have killed in your lifetime). Misha is an amazing father and anyone who says different with snide, hypocritical remarks can just shut the fuck up.
@vanyadolly9 жыл бұрын
+Acoustic Kitty There's isn't any difference from the animal's POV, they're still being tortured. Kids aren't evil or "bad" because they get too rough with animals, but that's what parents are there for - to tell them not to hurt other living beings. That ought to be the learning process. And torturing a crab and then not putting it out of its misery isn't any better.
@AcousticKitty9 жыл бұрын
+vanyadolly True, but just because it wasn't part of the story doesn't mean he didn't talk to West about it. And it doesn't mean he was actually torturing it. when we pick up my cat and hold him, give him kisses against his will, and not let him get away we call it torturing him. West accidentally pulled the claw off, which as Misha said is easier than you think, and he was poking it's eyes. that's all that he really described him doing. people are flipping out about it. as from the crabs POV all it thinks is it's going to be eaten, something it thinks all the time in the wild. then it got killed. yes, I hope Misha talked to him about it, but people are getting bent out of shape calling him an unfit father when he's an amazing father and we weren't there when all this happened to be making judgments.
@vanyadolly9 жыл бұрын
+Acoustic Kitty It's pretty clear-cut to me. If you're going to eat an animal, give it the respect it deserves and don't cause it undue distress. I like Misha, too, but it's entirely possible to like and admire someone without agreeing with every little thing they say and do. That doesn't mean I think he's an unfit parent, it just means he isn't perfect. I wouldn't take a baby to a rave either. :P
@vanyadolly9 жыл бұрын
Melanie Larson I don't know why you expect me to agree with your "they're just animals" attitude, which frankly, is ridiculous. Some horses are kept as pets, some horses are eaten. There's no inherent difference between the two. Why you would cause needless suffering to either one is beyond me.
@melanielarson91739 жыл бұрын
+vanyadolly I didn't say it was right. I said it wasn't wrong. And yeah. They're just animals. If the countries that eat horse meat think it's not wrong to eat them, let them. And if you want a FULL opinion so you understand me more clearly, read my comment up on the top.

Seriously with the whole thing about crab torture, people? Do you know where your meat comes from? Crabs? Boiled alive. Lobsters? Boiled alive. Shrimp? Boiled alive. Chickens? Hung upside down, electrocuted, boiled alive, and exsanguinated. This isn't even going into large mammals like cows and sheep. Sure, people shouldn't torture animals needlessly, but I seriously doubt that's what West was doing. He was probably just curious. It's also worth noting that they were going to eat them anyways, and that crabs have emotional/intellectual capacities comparable to insects. It's not like he was ripping off a cat's limbs. It was just a glorified bug.
@KasperochSiri6 жыл бұрын
You don't have to boil Crabs alive. Search for Gordon Ramsey Masterchef and Crabs and you can se that he cuts the crab in the brain to kill it quickly and then immediately after put it in boiling water.
@crazypiratesquirrel30386 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I have only known one person who cooked crabs/lobsters alive, the vast majority of all others dispatched them quickly and then cooked them within a few minutes or tossed them in the freezer right away. Plus I have never known anyone to boil shrimp alive. A quick check on the cooking websites says you can but to me that would be like serving a cooked fish whole (as it was in the water) on the table. Yuck.
@madisonst.claire69686 жыл бұрын
But it wasn't emotional or intellectual; it was physical, and crabs can still *feel* pain. Are you saying that, since a lot of chickens, cows and pigs are tortured, then it's perfectly okay? First of all, don't assume where your audience gets their produce. I buy all of mine completely organic and grass-fed from a local farm that ensures the animals are killed humanely. And boiling crabs and lobsters alive is different to ripping off limbs and poking out their eyeballs, then tossing them back in the water after any chance of survival has been ruined. They die quickly in the water, and often, the water is heated gradually, so they don't notice what's happening. They die before they notice.
@cathyshepard2536 жыл бұрын
Also worth mentioning if West had eaten crabs before, he very well could have been used to ripping off their legs and poking eyes and stuff. It was probably just really interesting to him that the crab was actually moving this time around, so he started messing with it. Had he known what he was doing, I doubt he would have been so rough with the poor creatures.

Shawn Winchester First: to eat crabs, they need to be cooked alive. I'm sure that's just real fun for them, it's not like being boiled alive is painful af, amirite? Also, no, they're not just "food". If you live in the US or in Europe you have plenty of resources: ways to eat only plants while staying perfectly healthy (there are even homeless people who are vegan, look it up). Which means, if you still eat animals in these regions, you're doing it for the sheer pleasure, not for survival. Don't you think causing unnecessary pain to an animal solely for your personal pleasure is a bit... cruel? But I guess you just don't care, since you think getting pissed at animals being boiled alive is a bit "overreactive".

+MsDanibanani90 "animal abuse" by children is an exploratory stage of their development. However, the intensity and motivation for this abuse must be explored. I'm sure that most parents educate children that all living creatures experience pain and consequently they develop empathy after a while. I mean, West is like, what, 4 yrs old... At some stage of your growth you must have grabbed too strongly, poked, pushed, and so on some animals. Just ask your parents, it a totally normal thing and, generally, most children cannot fathom the idea of suffering. You can easily notice that children living inland would "care" more for a dog than a little sea creature. At age 6 I did weird things to frogs, earth worms, ants, snails , y know?
@MsDanibanani909 жыл бұрын
Like i said in my message - my problem lies with Misha not intervening and less with west being a curious child. First he let his son torture one of the crabs on the boat and later another crab on the playground. He'd have had plenty of time to step in and to tell his son that what he's doing isn't right and should never be done.
@doi44ja9 жыл бұрын

+MsDanibanani90 Misha is just being Misha and you'd know by now that he tends to exaggerate things in his storytelling, mostly for funsies, and his ways of a flower-children rearing. I think that "torture" was a too strong word used here by him and, I agree, it does one make feel unfomfortable. Had he used "played with it/explored it", our reaction would perhaps be quite the opposite. People are just people, we learn on our mistakes.Anyway, who am I to judge - just look at the audience sadly aww'ing at Misha's "he ripped his claw off" only to laugh histerically at his "tortured him, poked".

While Castiel is cute ( even in BadA$$ mode) - I'm mainly a Misha fan. I love his anecdotes and the way he tells them - but the crab story was cruel, pointless and not funny. Misha rightly defined it as "Torture" - and there IS a differencertain between "exploring" or "studying" and torture. As a fellow parent, I believe he should have stopped it, early on on the "eye pocking" stage.Age 4 is not too young to be thought empathy.

I'm sorry but much like West I was a little shit as a kid (3-5ish), we used to get potato bugs and fire them out of slingshots, id burn and or drown ants, we caught a dragonfly once in a jar I don't remember what we did to it but my mom had this look of WTF, we went fishing as a family and I took the fish out of the bucket and poked them with a stick & I'm pretty sure we would watch and laugh at chickens getting beheaded. my mom never said anything, I got a lot of weird looks from her but she never stopped me. I am horrified at my behavior but it's also part of growing up kids get curious and an obvious question for us like can ants swim or why is the fish moving so much. become moments for kids to figure things out on their own honestly, I don't think kids understand the consequences of those actions and death is not something easy to understand. West was 5ish when this happened I wouldn't have said anything either. Misha is not a helicopter parent he lets his kids do their own thing and explore and honestly that's probably the better way to parent. just FYI at around 7, my mom said she stopped thinking I was going to grow up as a phycopath lol

Melanie Larson I have a lot of issues with how seafood is handled to begin with, but either way, being dropped in boiling water is faster than having your eyes poked out or claw torn off in advance. Why torture them beforehand if you're going to kill them?
@melanielarson91739 жыл бұрын
+vanyadolly The kid's four. obviously, Misha didn't think it was a big deal. which it's not. misha knows that west isn't gonna torture a pet like a cat or dog. and maybe west already knows to not hurt those kinds of animals. maybe west knew it was food, so, as a kid, thought it wouldn't matter one way or another. you know, crabs are arachnids. so are spiders. I assume you don't like spiders. people eat spiders. would you think that ripping off a spider's leg is torture? you're gonna kill it anyway.
@howardpushpa9 жыл бұрын
+vanyadolly I mean, generally torturing any life form is bad. But to be fair, there has been a long debate on crustacean perception of pain. Even though studies have shown that crabs change their behaviors after exposure to painful stimuli, their nervous system is significantly different from ours. Regardless of the science, of course, this isn't a behavior that a parent should tolerate in a child. Misha certainly should have known better.

Misha's an awesome person and I admire all the humanitarian work he does but letting your kid torture an animal (no matter what kind) and then making it into a story that's intended to be humorous isn't cool. Crabs do feel pain. I highly doubt he'd do the same if it was a rabbit or something instead. Your compassion shouldn't be limited to certain animals and if you want to make the world a peaceful place you can't ignore the pain of other creatures.

+Mystress1980 I'm rephrasing my comment: I am religious. therefore, I believe God created every living thing on the earth. I believe humans have free agency. not animals. animals go by instinct. (meaning they do not THINK before doing. they just DO to SURVIVE and defend themselves). I DID NOT say torturing animals was okay. Nor did I say it was right. I said it wasn't "wrong". In my vocabulary, meaning "condemning." Is it against the law to do such things to a crab/food? No. No, it's not. I don't believe it's right to criticise Misha for not disciplining his child "right"/the way you would do it. Its his son, not yours. Of course, I would tell my child to stop torturing the animal because it's annoying. Not because it's wrong/condemning. It's not right, either. Never did I say it was okay or right. Maybe I came across that way, but no. And you go ahead and criticise the crap out of me. Because I'm not gonna criticise you. I'd be wasting my time. There's me rephrasing my comment. Hope you're happy.
@howardpushpa9 жыл бұрын
+Melanie Larson I understand that you're religious, but saying that all animals act only on instincts is just factually untrue. we empirically know, through many years of research (partly initiated for the pursuit of humane ways to process food in the culinary field), that many animals have cognitive abilities beyond set reflexes. In fact, we know that elephants have self-awareness, dogs experience love in the same exact way we do (while cats do not), dolphins have highly developed languages, many species of monkeys have extremely complex social systems, cows and pigs are just as intelligent, if not more, than dogs, and so many more wonderful things.That's one of the beauties of science. We can be pretty confident that we're probably right, and if we're wrong, we can also be pretty confident that someone would correct us. Crabs, for example, do experience pain, but the pain likely does not carry as much emotional and self-aware affliction in crabs as it does in humans. The reason being that we have extremely different neurological systems, and crabs simply do not process pain the same way we do.So, West's childish cruelty isn't as bad as it seems, but it certainly isn't a good mode of treating other animals, which may experience pain in much more severe ways than crabs do. We agree with each other on this one. But when you ask your kids to not torture animals, please remember to tell them that we know some animals experience love and distress just the way we do, and that many of them deserve the same amount of dignity and rights as humans do. I implore you to watch some documentaries on how this country produces meat, and keep in mind that all the cows, pigs, chickens, and sheep experience pain in the same way humans do. And that cows and pigs in particular have the cognitive ability to love, to attach, to bond, and to experience sorrow, joy, and fear.
@melanielarson91739 жыл бұрын
+Howard Huang Well, of course animals experience fear, love, physical pain in their own way. but I didn't say they go ENTIRELY off of instinct. "to survive and defend themselves" are the words I used, I believe. and also to reproduce, find food, etc... of course, I've experienced with my cats that they experience fear, love, mourning, etc... I agree with you on that. but I think I might have not expressed it clearly that I did not mean ENTIRELY on instinct. hmmm..... no, I do not believe they have free agency. free agency is the ability to CHOOSE for yourself. that's what I mean. they may have emotional feelings, yes. (love, fear, mourning, etc..) The only thing I think is impossible is them having the ability to THINK. For example, I don't think the crab was thinking, "Why is this kid torturing me? just let me go, please!" when west was doing that. And I do believe that animals communicate with each other. Dolphins, dogs, cows, and pigs, etc... are truly intelligent beings. ALL animals communicate. and I don't believe that what I believe is FACTUALLY untrue. because you can't prove that it's not true. Did I clarify a little more? and I completely respect your opinion.
