Vancouver 2010 Olympic Mascots Miga Quatchi Sumi and Mukmuk

Miga the Sea Bear : Miga is a snowboarding sea bear inspired by the legends of the Pacific Northwest First Nations tales of orca whales that transform into bears when they arrive on land. Part Spirit Bear, a rare white bear unique to BC, Miga's outgoing spirit and high energy draw her to action and adventure.
Quatchi the Sasquatch : Quatchi, a shy and gentle giant, is a sasquatch; a popular figure in local native legends of the Pacific West Coast. The sasquatch reminds us of the mystery and wonder that exists in the natural world. Although Quatchi loves all winter sports, he's especially fond of hockey and dreams of becoming a world-famous goalie.
Sumi the Thunderbird : Sumi is an animal spirit who wears the hat of the orca whale, flies with the wings of the mighty thunderbird and runs on the furry legs of the black bear. With a name that is derived from the Salish word sumesh meaning guardian spirit, Sumi is passionate about the environment and is a fan of all Paralympic sports.
Mukmuk the Marmot : Mukmuk is a small and friendly Vancouver Island marmot who always supports and cheers loudly for his friends during games and races. Mukmuk, the mascot sidekick, is considered an honourary member of the team and enjoys surprising his friends by popping up on occasion to share in the spirit and fun of the Games. Mukmuk gets his name from the word muckamuck, Chinook jargon for food, because he loves to eat when he's not playing with his mascot friends.

I love this video so much! I was 10 years old when this video was released and the Winter Olympics were taking place. This was my favourite video on the internet, I’m now 18 years old and this video still is on my list of all time favourites! I loved (and still love) all the mascots, Muk Muk, Sumi, Miga and Quatchi, but Muk Muk is my absolute favourite! So much nostalgia, I was so excited for my country and felt so proud to be Canadian. I collected Happy Meal toys of the mascots in bobsleighs, skis, etc, the key chains, the stuffed toys, the hoodies and t-shirts, I saw the Olympic torch, just so many happy memories, and this video just brings it all back for me! No other Olympic mascots have been as cute as the Vancouver 2010 ones! ❤️❤️❤️ I also love that Muk Muk represents the FANS! Because although not all of us were destined to be athletes, fans, love and support are an important part of the sports community. These days I find myself wishing I had lead a more athletic school-life, but coming back across this video reminds me that I should be proud of myself and encourage and support those who are athletic, because love is what truly drives ambition!

I used to own almost every collection for Quatchi Miga Sumi, MukMuk when I was almost 15, but it gave me an idea when I saw their illustration on the Olympic truck. I became influenced by their illustrative style but I did not came out from the closet until almost 7 years later. If you see my animated demo reels, you will be surprised that how much I was extremely influenced by that Illustrative style. Few years ago, I sold most of my collection for computer parts. But I still have a Mug.

Best moments: 1) Beginning, Miga kidnapping the hermit crab's shell :D 2) Photo of Quatchi & Miga riding sleigh (2:38), the faces are so cute. 3) Sumi starting to gain size and transferring the group to Vancouver City at 3:40. The music is awesome! Also, Sumi's native drums flavoured theme is great.

From what I heard, the Fuwa's were really funny and came out before the events and started to goof around. NBC however, didn't show them much (hardly ever!). So many just saw them as Icons telling you what event was going on. They also were a cartoon, prior to the start of the games, that taught people the origins of some of the events.

It's not mentioned anywhere in the official propaganda but Sumi is clearly the mascot of winter paralympics 2010. Every time he's seen doing sports in the advertisements he's doing them with paralympial equipment and he's mentioned favoriting paralympics.

It is nice that, even though there are problems like commercialization and gentrification issues, the Olympics remain the keystone event that unites the world in something fundamentally positive. Considering the alternatives that we are all embroiled in; war, disasters, multi- national corporatism, post- colonial exploitation of the third world, etc. the Olympics are at least a foil; an example that we're capable of better. For that reason alone I think the Olympic spirit remains commensurate.
