If you mean Linear Induction Motors, that IS how SkyTrain works, since first built in 1985. Electromagnets mounted on the underside of each car pull the train along the wide silver rail in the middle of the track. It lets SkyTrain accelerate & stop quicker than normal wheel-powered trains, so trains can be closer together & more frequent.

@Mezzotenor The train is actually really smooth. It's always been world-class. The first half of this loop is newer (2000ish) and the last half is older (1986)...but it's seamless all the way through. The old stations aren't as nice, but the track is great. In real time it's a bit bumpier, but the playback speed does reduce that...and I have the camera on a good tripod on the window ledge right at the front with the lens as wide as it'll go, so that helps too.

Sure there are occasional computer hiccups, but like any good system, it's designed to fail-safe; if something fails, the train stops. The computer never has a heart attack or falls asleep at the throttle, either. A "moving block" system to prevent a train from entering a section already occupied by another train. Humans monitor the trains at the control center, and can remote control or shutdown as needed.

@sarcee1960 Trains from Expo and Millennium lines share the track from Waterfront to Columbia,then they separate in two directions:one train goes to King George via Expo Line,over SkyBridge, and the one after it goes to VCC-Clark via Millennium line. They were given different names so people could easily navigate,like if you go,lets say,to Lougheed Town Centre,you don't want to get on Expo line,or if you want to go to Surrey Central,you don't want to be on Millennium line train.

Be happy they are able to use so-called "Moving Block" technology. If they didn't have that, and had to use a traditional block system, it would be significantly slower.

Agree with the top-rated commenter on all points. And how in the world did you eliminate all the vibrations from the motion of the train? Please don't tell me your trains don't have any... DC's Metro is bumpy, crowded and prone to breakdowns, but Vancouver's system looks utterly civilized.

Yeah, when things go wrong there is on-sight support. I haven't witnessed any serious issue in-between two stations. Worse that can happen is a power outage and that is handled from a distance. Everything is controlled from a control center located in Burnaby.

@extremehockeyfan - Totally agree. Even if they did it just out to coquitlam centre it would be a big improvement. They have plans apparently to make one out to gilford-mall in surrey, and another possible out to Langley; yet I have heard little (and nothing official, at least that I can recall) about extending it further into coquitlam and out to ridge. This is such an f-ing over sight!

@PavleProductions I have the skytrain too -- lol... and I have some travel experience that opened my eyes to things I didn't know existed before.. like really nice, super fast, super comfortable trains, amongst MANY other things! My point is that the technology is and HAS BEEN available for many years, but somehow we just don't have nice things like that here. Anyway, you can't possibly understand why I like what I saw because YOU didn't see it yourself, so it doesn't make sense to you.
@imingzee
@imingzee 13 жыл бұрын
@PavleProductions I agree with you that it's nicer than a lot of transportation out there, but compared to what ELSE is out there it's pretty shaby, considering we pay some of the highest taxes in the world, right here in BC. In all fairness I'll give it a 6 out of 10 in comparison to what else I've seen. By the way, I am from Europe too, though I haven't been back there for about 15 years now.. if you love technology, culture and nice things you should check out Japan. Simply amazing!!!

Could someone tell me why the Millenium line has a different name if it overlaps with the Expo line for most of the route? Is it the Millenium line in one direction, and the Expo line in the other? I used to live in Vancouver about 10 years ago, and seeing the different names now confuses me. Thanks for the excelent video. Brought back memories.

@GYTransit 2 жыл бұрын
Very late reply, but the Millennium Line and Expo Line were interlined between Waterfront and Columbia Stations. However, they diverge after Columbia Station into two routes - one goes to Surrey (the Expo Line), the other continuing in northeast New Westminster, then North Burnaby, and finally back into Vancouver (the Millennium Line).

@@squatch545 For a little addendum, in case this interests you, the SkyTrain network is completely different today. The old Millennium Line is no longer a thing. We currently have an Expo Line branch running to and from Production Way-University to Waterfront, which is basically the old Millennium Line, just cut short. Instead of terminating VCC-Clark, it terminates early at Production Way. The other Expo Line branch is the original one that goes to Surrey. Instead, the current Millennium Line still runs from VCC-Clark and meets this new Expo Line branch at Production Way and also at Lougheed Town Centre, but it goes northeast at Lougheed Town Centre to Coquitlam and Port Moody in what is called the "Evergreen Extension" instead of looping back to Burnaby/Vancouver. As a result, Production Way and Lougheed are now transfer stations to the Production Way branch of the Expo Line, and Braid and Sapperton are now designated as "Expo Line" stations. The area from Waterfront to Columbia has not changed, but is now the interlined portion of the two Expo Lines.

@@GYTransit I lived in East Van (Renfrew neighborhood) on Slocan St. and used to take the skytrain at the 29 Ave station to downtown. I could be downtown underneath The Bay store in about 15 minutes. When I went to UBC I had to get off at Commercial Dr station and then take the 99 bus to the campus. I always wished there was a skytrain to UBC. Going the other way, sometimes I'd take the skytrain to Metrotown but that was about as far East as I would go. This was all back between 1998-2003.

@@squatch545 They're currently planning for a UBC SkyTrain to be built as an extension from VCC-Clark via Broadway. A extension on Broadway is already confirmed and expected to be completed in 2025, but the UBC extension will probably not be happening for another 5 years at least. Our current options on buses to UBC are 49 at Metrotown Stn via 49th Avenue, R4 at Joyce via 41st Avenue (used to be called "43"), 44 from Downtown via Burrard Bridge into 4th Avenue, 84 from VCC-Clark via 4th Avenue, some other smaller bus routes (4, 9, 14, 25, 33), and of course, the ever-famous 99 B-Line from Commercial-Broadway (Commercial Drive Station and Broadway Station were merged into one station and renamed "Commercial-Broadway" in 2009). They are planning to shorten the 99 B-Line once the Broadway extension opens.

I think your expectations are a bit high. The skytrain is a more efficient LRT system than it is a "high speed train". It's mean't for commuters from neighbourhood to neighbourhood in a cities metro, not nationwide or anything. Compairing skytrain to European or Japanese models isn't very fair. Canada is so large high speed rail would be perfect, but too expensive. The only place here that it could be feasable and logical is between Windsor Ontario and Quebec City.
