Jim's Story - Dementia Friendly Communities

The City of Vancouver is working in partnership with The Alzheimer Society to build inclusive dementia-friendly communities. Jim Mann, who has been living with dementia for eight years, shares his experience.

i like that he wears a badge that says he has alzheimer's ,sometimes we do not help because we are afraid of offending people even when we notice they are confused.

Jim: Your presentation and message were superb. I empathize heavily with everything you said. I got a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease 8 years ago at age 57. Since then I have been very lucky, and am still relatively on a plateau, but I know I could fall off at any time. So, your suggestions for me and for my community are excellent. I agree that informing the public around me that i have a memory disorder is wise. Otherwise, they would and have misunderstood my impatience and fumbliing. When I share my diagnosis, they are almost always more helpful and understanding. It is too bad that relatively few people with memory disorders are willing to share freely what they have, because that puts others into an expectation of normalcy which no longer really applies to me. Cheering for this guy! So open about his diagnosis! I love that and I think its greatly needed in society. Society needs to understand that this is a disease, not that someone is "going potty" or "getting senile" - they have a disease that's eating away at their brain. If you think about it that way you'll have a lot more empathy I think
