I love Ultraviolet. It was something new, fresh, unique, inventive, stylish, cool, edgy, hip, and updated such as the concept and themes due to it's story, performance's, music, direction, action sequences, and cinematography. Milla Jovovich did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying Violent Song Jat Shariff did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying as she put tons of emotion and depth into her role. It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it decent. It never gets old.😍😎👍💯

We can thank Sony for ruining this movie. They literally made the director change much of the script and his vision for this movie instead we were given an action movie instead. This movie was supposed to start off slow paced and start picking up as we continue on with the movie as it's intensity picks up. And this movie was supposed to be a lot more gory than what we got here.

I had no freaking idea that an anime even existed. Incidentally, Wimmer's previous movie, Equilibrium, was also a huge hit in Japan, to the extent that gunkata still shows up in a ton of Japanese media to this day. Gen Urobuchi, the writer of Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero, even wrote fanfiction for it in the form of a short kinetic novel.

I really felt bad for Milla Jovovich because she is worth more than these type of movies. She has amazing martial art skills, her acting capabilities had improved over the years, and she is a visionary. Hollywood always put her in bad movies. Tbh, she could've been a perfect Marvel Black Widow.

i love the colorful shots the most. the contrast and the almost platonic perfection of early 2000s hollywood sets is such a cool enigma to me. this movie is a reflection of that. I also wonder if the game mirror's edge took inspiration from this movie in it's art direction. Maybe that's a stretch though

I thought the weird fuzzy look of the people's faces was to signify that they had the 'vampire' virus; trying to make them look ethereal or more than human or something. I hadn't noticed if it had only been apparent in ppl w/ the virus and not in regular Humans or not and didn't care enough to rewatch it, but now maybe I will just for shits and gigs. Nope. The effect appears on regular people as well. This wouldve made an awesome Netflix show. I truly felt that so much was cut from this movie and this video confirms that. There was just too much action. By the time she fights Daxxus, the movie is over and I feel like someone slapped me with a stack of DVDs. It answers the question " can a movie have too much action?". The answer is yes.
@RandalltheVandal
@RandalltheVandal Жыл бұрын
The second half of the movie has almost no action at all and that is without a doubt the worse half of the movie. The movie is at its best when it's doing over the top matrix-esque action scenes. You can argue that too much of the story was cut out, and that is a fact, but as I pointed out in the video the story wasn't exactly the most compelling thing on the planet, so it's not like including all of it would have made this movie a masterpiece. There are movies with more action and less story than this that are far better.

This is just my opinion and opinions are subjective. But Milla Jovovich, in my eyes, is a lot like Ron Perlman; she's not a very good actress and 9 times out of 10, if she's billed on a film, I already know what type of film it's going to be before seeing a single frame. I'm actually baffled as to why she continues to get work other than that she's not unattractive, there's a market for campy films and her husband is a Hollywood director. In point-of-fact, the only films in her 59 movie filmography I even think are good are The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc and the Hellboy reboot. (Yes, I'm one of three people who unironically enjoyed that movie...and I'm also one of those same three people who think that The Fifth Element is an over-hyped camp film that's not very good.) Funny enough, there are also only 2 live-action movies of Pearlman's that I like as well. Pacific Rim and a little-known film called Bunraku.
@RandalltheVandal
@RandalltheVandal 3 жыл бұрын
So you don't like the Pearlman/Del Toro Hellboy movies? What the fuck, man? But yeah, honestly, Mila is so great. Wish she could star in a good action movie. I think her main problem is that she married one of the shittiest directors ever, so she's basically obligated to star in all of his schlock.

@@RandalltheVandal Yeah. LOL. I know that it's blasphemous for me to say so, but I've never been a fan of the Del Toro Hellboy, but I loved the reboot. And I'm as sad about never seeing a sequel to that as everyone else is sad about never seeing a follow-up to The Golden Army. I'm a big cinephile, but I'm odd by most people's estimate in what I love. For instance, I tend to like most modern remakes over their originals. Not just Hellboy. For instance, I love (and greatly prefer) the remakes to: A Nightmare on Elm Street Total Recall Evil Dead Tomb Raider 3:10 to Yuma The Amityville Horror Get Carter Sleepless I Spit on Your Grave The Magnificent Seven Mortal Kombat Old Boy Point Break The Quick and the Dead Roots Tron True Grit Walking Tall The Wiz (The Wizard of Oz) And these are ALL films that were either commercially panned or that the movie-going public breathed a collective sigh at. But I love them because they're all generally more grounded or self-serious versions of their source material. (Except for The Quick and the Dead. That one is a bit over-the-top.)

Great commentary, very well put. I agree, Ultraviolet did kind of have a thin plot, and when I first viewed it I was like "meeah", and thought it had a weak plot. But then later on I was compelled to watch it again, and more after that. I can agree it has below par CGI and kind of an oversimplistic story, I still grew to appreciate this movie because of the overall feel of it. Perhaps the same as a movie version of Aeon Flux would have. Yes, it is a movie that did poorly at the box office but there are some who have always appreciated it. I wasn't trying to be like other movies, at least it seemed to try to blaze its own trail. Still like it more than a lot of the other sci-fi being done today.

Everything else was rudimentary and I could not get over the excessive Photoshopping of faces--blurry to the max and literally could not see any pores, wrinkles, or skin folds. Hi, I loved your video because I see that I've finally found someone who more or less shares the same opinion as me about this movie. I've always loved Ultraviolet and I really admire the way Kurt Wimmer created this universe and what he tried to do with this film. It will always frustrate me that I'll never be able to watch the original movie as the director intended it to be seen, but I found on an old blog the testimony of someone who claims to have seen the more or less complete work during a test screening, I believe. This person explained that there were indeed more scenes with Violet's husband trying to talk to her at the complex where the government is experimenting on her, but he can't reach her. He screams for the guards to let him see his wife, whom he sees from afar as dead... There were also funnier sequences, I think, where Violet asks what color the next room is (referring to her clothes changing color according to the room), or during the fight with the white ninjas, when she sees them, she says something like, "What the hell is this?" and the fight lasts longer, if I remember correctly. At the beginning of the film, when she's fighting against the other vampires, she cuts off someone's hands with her sword, and she sees the same person later in the church with bloody stumps, also, if I remember correctly... Not long ago, I found Kurt Wimmer's Instagram account. I sent him a message to tell him what I thought of the movie, and he replied, thanking me and saying that he was touched to see that I understood his vision. He also mentioned that he hopes the studio will one day let him release his complete version of the film, including finishing the special effects. So, I concluded that the special effects in the current film aren't actually finished.

I put here the blog post which describes some missing scenes : Hey, everyone. :) I'm sure most of you will be going to see ULTRAVIOLET this weekend. I just got back from a showing here in Los Angeles and I figured I'd start a thread discussing the various differences between the cut that was screened last February, which I had the opportunity to see, and the finished product. Some of the changes are pretty insignificant while other scenes changed the way the film was structured. I'll list as many as I can remember either way. The rough cut of the movie ran about two hours in length while this new version clocks in at 88 minutes. There will be spoilers contained within so please tread carefully. The Beginning The opening narration is a bit different in the finished version. In the rough cut, Violet explains that "Hemophagia" was an aberration that spread like wildfire, turning humans into vampires but not the kind you've come to expect. The Hemophages would become stronger and faster than normal humans but they wouldn't feed on blood. They did grow fangs and constant blood transfusions were required to keep themselves alive, but their lifespan would also be significantly shortened once they became infected. Death would come ten years from the point of infection for anyone who contracted HPV. Various Bits When we were first introduced to Violet it was mentioned that she was living in the last few days of her life. I believe she had a little over 24 hours before she was supposed to expire. The scene where the detectives are investigating the attack on the blood lab had a bit more dialogue, mostly a few lines where a seasoned cop berates a younger officer for using the term "vampires" to describe the Hemophages. I don't recall there being an electrical discharge when the swords or various items are pulled out of the dimensional pockets (flat space). The shot where the cop pulls out a sword from the chest of a dead Hemophage and then slides it back in looked and sounded nastier in the rough cut without all the sound and visual effects. There was also a few more snippets of dialogue in the scene where Violet, posing as the courier, is trying to gain access to the weapon developed by the humans. We see her clothes change into the color of whatever room she's in and when asked by one of the lab technicians if she has any more questions, she replies, "What color is the next room?" The fight that takes place after Violet's cover is blown was originally extended. The sound effects of bones breaking and people screaming in pain are missing. Also missing is a scene where Violet punches a guard who is wearing the translucent body armor. Her first hit does nothing so he taps his chest and says, "Shatterproof armor, bitch." Violet responds by hitting him harder and knocking him backwards, shattering his chestplate. There's also some dialogue missing from the guards who slide into the room with the stun batons. Something along the lines of "Wait! She's armed!", followed by Violet pulling the trigger but having no ammo left, then the guards get all confident and rush her. That's when she disassembles the rifle and beats them with the pieces. Also, this fight was the most heavily edited. It didn't flow as well without the dialogue and the bits that were missing. Several characters including the lab tech/government guy who speaks to Violet as she's exiting the facility with the weapon as well as the blonde motorcycle courier had their voices dubbed. The motorcycle chase up the building included a scene where we see a room full of office employees inside get shot up by the stray fire of the helicopter guns. When Violet opens the package to reveal Six, he is originally seen lying in a pool of bubbling water, not the bright blue animated static that you see now. Daxus had a longer introduction with more dialogue. We learned that he's got a serious problem with germs. He wears a pin striped suit that goes beyond the sleeves to cover his shoes and hands. You see an entourage of people sanitizing everything for him while he is being briefed about the theft of his weapon by one of his underlings. When Violet snatches Six and tries to make it out of the building, she is chased up the stairwell by a few vampires. One of them yells out, "I'm gonna kill you with my bare hands!", so Violet leans over the railing with her gun and shoots his hand off right at the wrist. I loved this scene. That same Hemophage is seen later in the mausoleum fight with Nerva and his men, cradling his bloody stump and looking mighty pissed at Violet. There is a small scene missing where Nerva makes a quick deal on the phone with the Blood Chinois, the Asian gangsters from the rooftop scene, to corner Violet before she can escape with Six. That's why they suddenly appear out of nowhere when she reaches the top of the building. The scene where Daxus and his soldiers storm the level where the Hemophages are shooting out the lights was longer. When it goes dark, we see the entire room lit only by the flashes of gunfire (very similar to the opening of EQ) as Nerva and his goons surround each soldier and pump them full of bullets. This goes on for a minute, getting all dark and quiet between kills, before Daxus quietly calls out to his troops and the emergency lights go up to reveal them all scattered and shot to death. The scene where Daxus picks up the coffee showed a bit more of his hands shaking, making him seem less confident and the precision of his kills all the more surprising. In one scene, Six asks Violet if she has teeth like a vampire. She opens her mouth to reveal fangs and says that she has to grind them down or they grow back. When Six "dies" in the park, his body was sprayed with foam and taken away by the guys in the funky hazmat suits. The Flashback Here's the big one. There were several flashbacks towards the end of the movie. It happens right after Garth brings her back from the dead if I'm not mistaken, and it mostly shows Violet as a young nurse and her husband, the doctor (Ricardo Mamood). Violet is played by another actress, one who looks similar to Milla Jovovich. During the opening montage at the start of the film we see glimpses of this woman in a lab being poked and prodded by scientists, looking very miserable and stripped of her dignity. This is when we discover that the woman is actually Violet from ten years ago and we see how she contracted the virus. A disheveled looking Hemophage enters the hospital room where a very pregnant Violet and her husband are having a quiet moment. The vampire is trying to steal some blood and gets into a scuffle with the husband before being shot and killed by security. The blood splatters and hits Violet in the face, getting in her eye and pretty much altering the course of her life forever. I do recall a scene where the husband is arguing with some government guys and asking to see his wife, then discovering that their baby was either terminated or lost to the disease. I'm pretty sure I didn't dream that last part up but I swear it's the only scene not stored in my memory banks. We then cut back to the present. After she leaves Garth on the night of her resurrection, she goes to see her husband. She doesn't actually meet him, just watches him quietly from a balcony outside a fancy restaurant or concert hall, my memory is bit fuzzy on the details... anyway, she sees that he now has a lovely new wife and some children. He smiles at his young daughter and touches her face when a tear drop hits his hand. He looks up but Violet is already gone. The Ending The guard on the rooftop that is seen at the very end of the trailer actually gets decapitated in the original cut. Violet storming enemy HQ was also extended a bit. In the scene where Violet starts attacking that second wave of soldiers during the library fight, she stabs one of them in the balls with her gun-blade and flips him backwards (that one got a great crowd reaction). The "white room" fight also had a little injection of humor with that last guard going all crazy and doing the flip in the air, which was hilarious, and Violet looking up at him confused and mouthing the words, "What the fuck?", before killing him off. The fight with the flaming swords had a much better build up. As soon as the room gets dark, Daxus begins taunting Violet. We hear the sound of a sword slicing and Violet screams out in pain. Daxus: "Oh, come on. That wasn't so bad." We hear another attack followed by a scream. Daxus: "Okay. That was pretty bad." That's when she starts creating the sparks to ignite the sword. That was pretty much it. Many of the problems that I had with the original cut were actually fixed with the removal of certain scenes while the action suffered a bit with the toned down violence. The film didn't have very much blood other than a hand being shot off or Violet's fingers getting sliced, but I'm sure this was shooting for an R-rating. Also, the soft lens effect that makes everything in the film appear slightly blurred was not used in the version that was screened last year. The CGI was incomplete but the finished effects make the film look dark and muddy.

There was a test screening of the film *Ultraviolet* on March 21, 2005, in Burbank, California, which is often mentioned in discussions about the chaotic production of the film, where unfinished versions were shown to gauge audience reactions according to ChatGPT XD.

Honestly if I was a billionaire who had too much money I'd buy all rights to this movie and in collaboration with Kurt Wimmer restore the original version of the film with updated VFX. Love this film and especially fight scenes. I've read somewhere that there are a small number of people who saw an original cut at some test screening probably. Among some of the noticeable differences they mentioned were the absence of blurry filter, blood and screams in fight scenes, more jokes (for examle during the fight in white room when one of Violet's enemies jumps over her and she watches him as he flies she says "What the f*ck"

The look of the film I think has to do with showing how people with a vampire disease that makes people in a way superior to what they were yet even more vulnerable might experience their reality - stark, striking. I recently watched the movie again simply based on the cool name - UltraViolet - and the actress being so good at portraying warrior women characters. This time it occurred to me that the boy, Six, is Violet's son not a clone, and that she was an experimental victim before she knew. She may have been given fertility drugs (not a miscarriage but removing the fetuses before they got big), and her husband may not have died like she was told. I liked the fiery sword showdown with the control freak who violated her. In another probability Violet makes a deal with him to let him live if she can save the other 7 kids (2 of them may have been the husband's - notice her tear dropping on unsuspecting happy family). The vampires reminded me of some of long past aristocracy - the distant husband not wanting the wife/mistress taking care of the kids herself - she was not to be motherly but a sex object. So sweet to see her and Six bonding on the playground.
@RandalltheVandal
@RandalltheVandal 2 жыл бұрын
Never considered the possibility of Six being her biological son. It's an interesting theory but I'm not sure it's really supported in the film. It could have been in the OG cut, but the only way to know that for sure would be to read the novelization.

I unironically love this movie all around. I love the aesthetic look, the SFX, the action, the plot, the characters, the dialog. I just don't find it ugly at all. And I don't find the plot and characters to be simplistic cookie cutters either. To me, the movie is deeper than it seems, but it's probably because I'm reading into it things that were never intended... ... To me, this movie is about AIDS/HIV, and especially the early panic and stigma. It wasn't just the christianist homophobes either, even if they were the most vocal and vociferous. "Mainstream" society in general just wanted to segregate the AIDS victims away from society, absolutely paranoid about any contact or possibility of contagion. They just wanted the victims to go away and die. And so many died. So many died. To me, it's really meaningful that Ultraviolet's hero, Violet, was one of the good health care providers. One of the nurses that were willing to help the infected. Do you have any idea what that freaking meant during the AIDS panic? It wasn't like with COVID, where the health care providers were hailed as heroes. Back then, the doctors and nurses willing to care for AIDS victims were seen as filthy disease carriers. Okay okay, probably it's just me, and none of this was intended. But it still affects my emotional enjoyment of the film, and the nuances I perceive in various details.
