On the opening night of the Bengal Classical Music Festival 2014, a growing audience watched renowned Bharatnatyam dancer Vidushi Malavika Sarukkai alight the stage with a fiery solo performance. At the end of the session, she enthralled the audience with a dance performance to the song “Vande Mataram”. The song lyrics by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and tune by Hemanta Mukherjee. Vidushi Malavika Sarukkai was ably accompanied in her performance by Balaji Azhwar on the Mridangam, Neela Sukhanya Srinivavasan on the Nattuvangam, Venkataramani Srilakshmi on the violin, Murali Parthasarathy's vocals and light and sound management by Suresh Rajendran.

Vidushi Malavika Sarukkai is an acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer, which is an ancient form of classical dance in India, and the recipient of many awards. She started training under Guru K. Kalyanasundaram Pillai of the Thanjavur School and Guru Rajaratnam of the Vazhuvoor School. She has also studied ‘abhinaya’ under Guru Kalanidhi Narayanan, and Odissi dance under Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and Guru Ramani Ranjan Jena. Malavika's has captivated audiences worldwide with her traditional yet contemporary dancing style and her extraordinary artistry was featured in the BBC/WNET television documentary “Dancing”, a 9-hour series on world dance. The Government of India has also made a film on her life and work called “Samarpanam”. In recognition of her interpretation and choreography, the Indian Department of Culture has given Malavika senior fellowships and grants. Malavika has also had the honour of being the youngest solo dancer to have danced in the Festival of India in London and represented India in many countries like the United States, Switzerland, France and Japan.
