Shri J Sai Deepak is an engineer-turned-litigator practicing as an arguing counsel before the High Court of Delhi and the Supreme Court of India. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Anna University (2002-06) and a bachelor’s degree in law from IIT Kharagpur (2006- 09). Civil Commercial litigation, Constitutional law, and Competition law are his primary areas of practice.
He has been involved in numerous important cases, including those involving the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple, the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, the Basmati Geographical Indications, and the Indian Penal Code’s Marital Rape Exception. He received the Young Alumni Achiever’s Award from his home institution, IIT Kharagpur, in 2019. In addition to giving lectures on constitutional matters, he produces plenty of material for prestigious newspapers and periodicals.
About the book:
India, That Is Bharat, the first book of a comprehensive trilogy, explores the influence of European 'colonial consciousness', in particular its religious and racial roots, on Bharat as the successor state to the Indic civilization and the origins of the Indian Constitution.
India, Bharat and Pakistan, the second book of the Bharat Trilogy, takes the discussion forward. It explores the combined influence of European and Middle Eastern colonialities on Bharat as the successor state to the Indic civilization, and on the origins of the Indian Constitution. To this end, the book traces the thought continuum of Middle Eastern coloniality from the rise of Islamic Revivalism in the 1740s following the decline of the Mughal Empire, which presaged the idea of Pakistan, until the end of the Khilafat Movement in 1924, which cemented the road to Pakistan. The book also describes the collaboration of convenience that was forged between the proponents of Middle Eastern coloniality and the British colonial establishment to the detriment of the Indic civilization.

In Bhagvat Gita Lord Krishna clearly mentions that "Chatur Varna Maya Shrushtam Gun Karma Vibhagsha". This means that I have devised four Varnas (Varna is not caste. It is profession) according to virtues and deeds.

Do you also believe that Parashurama was an eternal person? and an avatar of Vishnu who existed at the same time as Krishna, a Yadav? do you also believe that Parashuram was killing all powerful landownding ruler class called Kshatriyas because they were absuing power? My point is if you are looking at meta or underlying narratives in the stories, why do you believe whatever is convenient to you? Karna humiliated during the swaymavar because he was NOT a kshtriya (because his birth was a secret) but in the story of parashuram, he suddenly became kshatriya ? Suyodhana made him king and all was good afterwards isnit it? It means, Suyodhana DIDN"T SAY to karna " hey man, you are born NOT a kshatriya, so you can't be a king". Krishna also karna after his death that he is "Satpurusha" - who upholds dharma. In the end, there are countless stories, several versions of each story across. This is NOT "standard" history book, where you can use to justify a narrative unless you are selective. Mata Amritanandamayi is a Fisher woman daugher. But brahmins, politicians and everybody fall on her feet. Why? India is extremely complex with several contradictory things in the past to form ONE official narrative. My position is if India has started industrialization much earlier or probably NOT colonized, the stratirification would have disappeard naturally as it did in Britian.

If you had read Mahabharata you would know that Karna belonged to Soot jaati which is not lower jaati by any standards. Soot means a progeny born to parents of different jaatis. In karna' s case his father was kshatriya and mother was Brahmin. How is he belonging to lower caste? Vyaas, Sanjay were also Soot. So before forming a malicious opinion go read the actual text. Karna was rejected by Parshuram because he decieved him. Infact karna was the student of Dronacharya. But karna wanted to learn Brahmastra to defeat Arjun, which he was not capable of, therefore he left Dronacharya and went to Parshuram. Kindly read the history.

Yes- Varna was a social matrix; Jati is karmic identity that comes because of your birth. One cant change the jati; but varna accommodated social mobility from Vedic times to medieval times. If anyone says it was rigid- then, that aspect of history is stained- like looking thru a tiny keyhole. Women were very much part of vocation; not restricted to farming. Weaving, pottert etc were family vocations where women played an important role in the preparatory stages of the vocation.

Differences are natural, real, essential. Architecture of society that makes harmonious, compatible is based on classification principle. Chaturvarna divides followers of Sanatana Dharma into four Varnas (classes). It is mentioned in the Rig Veda, the oldest of the four Vedas. It is important to recognise that Caste and Varna are different. Chaturvarna is mentioned in the Bhagwad Gita by Shri Krishna. It based on a person’s “gunas”. Gunas are attributes/qualifications. It is not hereditary. It is also important to distinguish between Hinduism and Sanatana Dharma. Both Hindus and Sanatanis draw their belief system from the scriptures. However Hinduism is a derivative of Sanatana Dharma that has been anglicised by the incorporation of a number of colonial terms, such as Caste, God, Lord, gods, goddesses etc. none of which are mentioned in the scriptures. The term Hinduism itself is an anglicised version, derived name for this religion. It is derived from Sapta Sindhu which referred to an area of the sub-continent. The Persians corrupted it to Hindu to refer to people East of the Hindukush mountains. Caste, which is accepted as hereditary by Hindus has been incorporated into Hinduism. However if a person considers themselves as Sanatanis, they have to reject Caste and embrace Varna, which is based on one’s occupation. Accordingly in Sanatana Dharma the Varnas are as follows: a Brahmin is a priest by occupation, who is knowledgeable of the Vedas, performs pujas and typically associated with a Mandir. A Kshatriya is a warrior. Vaishya is a self employed person, a business person, an entrepreneur. A Shudra is a person who works for someone else and gets paid. In short, Hindus embrace Caste, which is considered hereditary. Sanatanis embrace Varna which is based on occupation. It is hoped that this clarifies the issue of Caste and Varna. Jati is based on a person’s association with a community. It can be compared to Class. There are thousands of Jatis. Like Zamindars, fisherfolk, shepherd, toddy tappers etc. Typically marriages were within a community and son’s followed their father’s profession. It tends to be hereditary. For instance a person will be identified as so and so from such and such community. Bharat has implemented a reservation system that includes Jatis as Scheduled Castes. This includes reservation for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Class (OBC). OBC is a collective term to classify castes that are educationally or socially backward.

If you go by that then everyone keeps changing their varna many times just in one day depending upon thoughts and roles they are playing. Why do you see the need to divide people into different groups then. Original varna system out of which caste system originated was birth based. Read yajurveda which mentions chandal and other outcastes and gives their definition. So by definition it's self evident that it was birth based atleast since then. Bhagwat Gita in its first parv itself talks about jaati. Mahabharat has many examples of birth based varna system and with that context birth based varna system interpretation of Bhagwat Gita is more honest and authentic. 🙏

These are just 2 examples of caste divide directly picked up from the indian epic - Mahabharata. The caste divide has always been there. Feeling superior is a human asuric quality at work. However, cultural habits, eating habits and rituals are exclusive to many. Please read the chapter "The soul force and fourfold personality"in The Synthesis of Yoga" authored by Sri Aurobindo .Our eyes will open up to Varna system. I quote one sentence."Ancients held the a sudra can become a brahmin by dint of his spiritual regeneration and culture"A sanskrit hymn goes in the Gita"Chatur varna maya srustha guna karma bibhagascha." Translated by Sri Aurobindo ,--Four varnas are created by me according to active guna and active karma."The which ever quality is in me I belong to that varna. The four aspects are innate in every soul.

About land owning, I agree. I came from the Thiyya caste of Kerala but grew up in Malaysia. Thiyyas are supposed to be OBC or outcast. But when I first went to India at age 32 to get married. My mom brought me to her home and pointed to the surrounding mountains and said all the land below all those mountains belonged to her father. Later I found my dad's side were also very big land owners. Logically thinking will take you to the same conclusion, the Shudras made things for Romans all the way to SouthEast Asia so they should be the richest community. In N. Kerala there was an attempt by the British to confiscate wealth from the producers class (Shudras) and give it to the Ksythriyas and Brahmins which caused the Mopillah riots; though most people just assume the only reason for that was Muslim extremism. That latter justification may have added vigor to the clashes, that is all.

There have always been conflicts and issues among different Varnas in Sanatan Dharm...Parshuram had issues with tyrant, oppressive Kshytriyas of his era, shudras have had issues with the dominance of Brahmins and Kshyatriyas ever since they got empowered through democracy.. people of all varnas can not be equally powerful , dominant and influential in the society..so the power struggle will continue

The jati system is an unintended outcome of the foreign invasions and rule on India and is based on work done. As Muslim invaders destroyed all the schools in India, the work and jati became hereditary. Untouchability arose due to this as a way to protect and prevent transmission of communicable diseases the often spread from dead bodies via people who did the work of burning and cleaning work.

I just want to ask does a person want to study Veda who don't surrender to the directions give by Veda... what is the problem to learn Veda who are not Brahmin by birth... unfortunately non Bharatiya are learning then why can't all sanatanis get access to the Vedas... Lord Shiva himself told Vedas can be taught to anyone who want to study Vedas irrespective of Varna or Jati.. male or female... For a moment let me agree with you... Even in that case let the Brahmin control that but why other Varnas has to deprived from that knowledge..Let the non Brahmins study Veda... Can't this be possible..Whoever learn Vedas and realise Brahma are Brahmins...Then your argument fails....i need a clear answer from Mr. Sai Deepak..🙏

Today all the upanishads and vedas are available on the internet archive for free. Who has stopped anyone from pursuing the same? It requires dedication and practice. Pursuing money is easier. The non- allowing does not exist now. For the last 50 years at least.

@@padmach3575 Unfortunately, if you want an answer from Sai Deepak, you might have to visit his lectures and ask him directly. But if you just want a sensible answer, I can give you that. Bear with me because this might be a bit long. If you want to have a rational discussion regarding this, I am open to that too. There are 4 varnas. Brahmanas were the priests whose job was to read, understand, practice and disseminate the information regarding Dharma. This was not just limited to Gurukuls but also to people who might get acquainted with the guru outside the gurukul. Hence, because they should not be misleading a huge number of people by misinterpreting the vedas, they were given extremely strict education on sanskrit, dharma, and how to interpret them. This is something people of other varnas namely kshatriyas (soldiers), vaishyas (merchants), and shudras (laborers) cannot afford to spend time on. Because their roles required the same amount of rigorous training but not in the vedas but in their professions. The duty of the brahmana is to guide the population with as much accuracy as possible regarding spiritual knowledge because others simply cannot have the time and energy to do so. Which is why they needed an entire varna dedicated to spreading this information. Varna mainly meant profession. Others can also independently do their own study of the vedas and achieve their own way of enlightenment. Take the famous rishi Vishwamitra. He was once a kshatriya king. Later on he became a brahmarishi. The famous Gayatri mantra was shared by rishi Vishwamitra to the world. So no one is stopping anyone from reading the vedas and benefiting from it's knowledge. But they need to meet qualifications in their expertise before they can be considered brahmanas. Just like a layman cannot become a successful astrophysicist just by reading books and tutorials. Most likely someone reading for themselves will face understanding issues and misinterpret the instructions. Hence, a guru is needed. A brahmana is that guru. Yes, there are people who can become a brahmana by studying the vedas by themselves. But they are a small minority. The majority of spiritual guidance needs to be done by an expert in that field. Who is the brahmana in this case. If you choose to study the vedas by yourself, you are free to do so. But when every individual can form different conclusions on the same vedas, what's to stop society from following down a false path? Hence why the role of a guru is important. Of course, even brahmanas are human beings and they can make mistakes. And the mistake one brahmana makes, is carried forward to the next generation and so on. So in the far future, dharma is bound to become adharma. This is why Krishna says that after each and every yuga, he will reincarnate in the world to punish those spreading evil and educate people on the true dharma, which is again from the same vedas. The vedas never changed. But humans do. Hence why they need periodic correction.
