You’ve got a house! Excellent. Just in time for winter. Perfect. I think you’re very sensible getting rid of gas in the van. The alternatives are much safer. You’re also very sensible taking a break at the first sign is a back twinge. Take it easy - nothing worse than a painful back!

Batteries and huge Amp draw is just as catastrophic as gas if it all goes wrong. 99.9999999 of campervans and Motorhomes have onboard gas, and yes of course you get the odd van go up in flames, but look how many of these brand new electrical cars are catching fire 🔥

Good idea to leave the gas locker in situ and instal the diesel tank in it. That way if you accidentally spill any diesel when filling the tank it won’t get into the domestic side of the van. Jeff

Hello. My advice is to keep the gas locker in place. It’ll support the tank and keep the chance of spills down. I’d also not block up (too tightly) the old gas drain. It’ll help in case of spills and allow diesel smell to vent. While unsure what your van is and how big it is I’d be reluctant to go bigger than a 2kW heater from what I can see of it. While diesel heaters have a range of heat settings (2kW have their lowest output at ~800W) to lessen the chance of carbon build up they should be run reasonably hot and not on their lowest setting for extended periods so don’t get a bigger heater than you need. A simple test is to run an electric fan heater in your van. If a 2kW electric fan heater is more than enough then a 2kW diesel heater will be (though the diesel heater puts a fair chunk of heat into the exhaust). While it’s your van and your rules, I’d steer away from the cheap diesel heaters. I’ve been very, very pleased with my Autoterm 2kW diesel heater. Pricewise these are significantly above the Chinese variants, but below the German ones. Features and build-wise it’s pretty close to the German ones and the parts are readily available, good quality and the whole range is coherent and well supported. The electronics, diagnostics and fuel tubing and fuel pump (for example) are also good. It’s these points (inc the coherent range) I like the most. I have no conflict of interest and no reason to not recommend. From my research and experience the fuel pump and fuel tubing, plus air system control (fan and electronics) are key to efficient and long term good performance. You’re right about the diesel tanks the heaters come with. They are generally wide and fairly flat; mine was 10L but I plumbed into the vehicle tank on the fuel return line (many reasons). The interior tanks are meant to be positioned athawtships to lessen front to back sloshing on acceleration and braking. You might need something a bit squarer, which could be >10L but you choose not to fill too full instead. There are loads of options out there including whether to pick up fuel via the cap (simplicity) or side (poss greater chance of failure / leaking). Siting the pump is really important and the locker might be a good spot depending on where you put the heater etc.

Cheers, yes I'm getting an Autoterm 2kW, it will be plenty (the existing LPG heater is 2kW)

I can't say I'm sad to see the gas system go, because plumbing with gas like that just scares me (I'd probably blow myself up with it), but I am curious to see how an electric cooker will work in the van. I got down on on my hands and knees to do the unplugging and lo and behold I could not move. My back would not let me up. A customer had to help me up. Hi David, first of all, sincerely hope your back got better quickly. You obviously don't want to disclose your license plate(s), and I can very much understand, why that is a good idea. This happened to give me an ídea, though. For you can get custom made magnetic signs. Those could read "KZbin: Vandemonium" or even the URL of your channel or the likes and you could just place them over your license plate(s) whenever filming your van. Not only would that save you some fiddling while editing the video, those could also double as "advertisement" to your channel, when placed on the sides during fairs or conventions.

@Vandemonium: Welcome to your new home, hope you will be happy there. Hope your back recovers very soon, but don't be in too much of a hurry to put it to the test ! Yes, get some cardboard to lay on, under the van. I am sure you have some (or soon will have) from your house deliveries. It makes for easier sliding under back and forth, too. With all the great electrical gadgets like induction and Jackery (or EcoTree) I see absolutely no reason to risk having gas in a confined place where you also sleep, so I think this is an excellent idea. Do watch some other vids about diesel heaters, alot of people have had a lot of trouble with them. I'm just wondering about those very new small things you plug in and which (so the adverts say) can heat up a room in minutes and are supposed to be VERY cheap to run - plug it into the Jackery and Bob's your Uncle ! (That's if they are to be believed). Sorry for the long waffle. Keep healthy

I kept the boot carpet from a Mk3 Ford Escort for laying on when working under cars. It was very tough, big enough to be useful but small enough to be easily handled, didn't soak up water from wet ground, and was a remarkable improvement in comfort. The type of carpet you used inside, David, might very well be just as good. Brute force is an acceptable methodology in certain situations. :) Chewbacca noises are also traditionally part of the experience! XD Raising the back of the van does make it easier though, and significantly reduces head impacts too. Ramps or a good jack + axle stands are highly recommended if you do this more than once in a blue moon. I like those little camping hobs, but you're not even allowed to bring them indoors into rented accommodation in Britain. When I was a teenager, I could follow a falling nut like a hawk! :) It took practice to build that skill, but even if you don't manage to follow the nut all the way, it's still very useful. Yep, I hear ya! I've had a few of those moments when you realise you have a lot more work to do than you thought. XD Only a few because I wasn't the one in charge of the repair very often, I was just helping. I had a much worse time with maintaining my own Linux systems. You know your bumper has uses, but many times, I wanted to install some simple program I was curious about, found it depended on something else slightly more complex which wasn't too bad, then found _that_ depended on some absolute monstrosity with a minimum of 5 other dependencies I had no use for or interest in whatsoever, and there was always a chance _those_ would be trouble too! Yes! XD "It came off, so it _will_ go back on again." I know the feeling! :D Won't speed bumps catch that pipe? You could do with a bit of steel wire, or at least string. About the twinges, I've been quite surprised to find I can often make the cramps in my legs go away by tensing my shoulders, almost like I'm stretching but with my arms down. I suppose it's to do with the very important nerves which I'm told the shoulders contain. I was going to suggest you try it, but, now I think about it, it would be best to be careful. I know how to tense my shoulders without making them cramp up, but it's taken some trial and error and the errors were not at all comfortable and sometimes worrying. Also my cramps can make me actually scream, so it's worth me trying to get rid of them as quickly as possible. If they were less bad, I think I might prefer to just try to relax the muscles. Erf... I was going to keep this short; I was just going to post about the carpet, but this video just had too much nostalgia for me. I hope it's not too long.

"A House. A house. My Narrowboat for a house." Well, you've been rescued now, haven't you. I must have missed something; like a notification. Three cheers for the the old Pandemonium..er, Van-de- etc. You know that you can do all sorts of re-cycling things with a gas cylinder. All you need basically is a grinder and a welder. DIY Make your own Fuel from pastic using the gas cylinder; a Grill; a heater; a wood stove, a gardening tool. - yes, it seems endless, the prospects. Now that you have your own home, you'll be looking forward to putting that workshop next to the garage to full DIY construction use, not allowing the talents you have developed during the Narrowboat days to fade away.

Who would have thought preparing for a change over could be so interesting -informative and dare I say funny. Though not for for your back - hope it is on the mend.....could u have put the van over a mechanic's pit ...much easier, the family always use a tarp to lay on ( not "woosie") and at the risk of being sworn at! does the tool box need a sort out😁. Enough hope it all goes OK when u feel better ...look f/w to future vlogs and will always now remember my right from my left! Jan Adelaide

The good old “all 16ths” spanner. A flattened corrugated box is good to lay and kneel on. It also provides a place for fasteners and tools to hide.

Left hand nuts on gas are normally marked with cuts on the face edges. A bolt has a plain bit of shank. Full threaded they are screws. And cap is a blanking gromet. Sorry used to be in the fastener trade (nuts and bolts).

Refer you backup gas stove....You need to take out the square bit around the gas burner and turn it upside down to use the little stove!

By leaving the gas locker in place when you install the independent diesel tank, with the hole through the bottom, any spillage or leakage of diesel would drain out onto the ground instead of finding its way into the van.

Entertaining as ever. You need a piece of old carpet or cardboard to lay on and a pair of overalls 🙂

For backup gas cooker purposes I can recommend something like an MSR PocketRocket combined with a small gas canister and Titan "kettle" (actually a small pot). Alpkit and others do similar bits of kit.

Great Video! I was curious, most exsaust ports I've installed have always had to be pointed up at least 1/4" inch (6.35mm) a foot (30.48cm). I'm sure not are all like that, I just thought it was a safety concern due to carbon monoxide (I know you have a detector so your probably good). I'm for sure not an expert and I'm sure you have read the installation instructions. So this is a just in case kinda comment. Have a great day!

Cheers. I don’t remember the exact install instructions but it’s pretty much just a case of point it out from under the van, away as far as you can from any opening windows etc so it can’t blow back in

I’ve just started to rewatch the build and got to the gas install yesterday lol and here you are removing it! I assume you didn’t like the smell or something. That or it’s slow to cook and heat up

Here's a couple of random thoughts for you to consider. Leave the hole in the bottom of the gas locker ,or make a slightly smaller one, just in case you get a diesel spill or leak. It will drain out of the van. Nothing worse than the smell of diesel on the bacon and eggs in the morning. I don't know the cost of diesel not air heaters are these days, but maybe consider looking in a commercial vehicle scrap yard . The cab heaters in long distance articulated trucks would do the job. My neighbour when I had a mobile home had done just that. His mobile was like an oceans the kids could reach the thermostat. I went with a wood burner like your narrow boat. Morse character and I could boil the kettle on it. Looking forward to the next instalment, I hope the back recovers. A piece of heavy cardboard will insulate you from the cold ground and it's easy to slide about on. Hope you get that Jack Wolfskin jacket clean, it's taken a bit of a beating.

I watched this video with a bit of nervous concern, particularly as I was eating dinner. If you'd blown yourself to bits, might have put me off my food 😉. Also couldn't help but think it might have gone easier and without messing up your clothes if you'd had one of those car creeper thingies. Still, I was very glad to hear you were moving into your house so that has to be very satisfying, and congrats. Looking forward to more adventures in the van. Will you go to Europe or stick to Great Britain? Would love it if you did major tours of Cornwall, Wales and Scotland. Living vicariously through you and the Camper Vibe duo! Thanks, David, and very glad you're safe and sound!
