NBC liked this problem of Vanessa’s a bit too much.

she was so talented. I just wish her coaches would've taken out that damn Comaneci back when she was younger. She was on top so many times and then bars would come up and that was it. :(
@richardross46773 жыл бұрын
She did a routine without it, that still had a 10 start value, at a couple international events in 98 and 99, hit it, and only scored in the 9.4s. I think she needed a flashy move like that to get a big enough score to contend in the AA, since lets face it her overall bars work was fairly crummy. At best a Romanian quality. So without a flashy move she would get a mediocre score even hitting.

@@SOS-ct9mv Yeah, alot of the gymnasts had eating disorders during this time. It's like it was trendy then. The coaching was abusive and they always focused on the gymnasts weight so, I guess if you heard," your fat", everyday, that would make someone like that. Horrible stuff.

Well, I just watched a video where it's like present day and she's a coach now and she is saying that this this wasn't the end of her career it's just different now. You know they can't all be gold medal winners at the Olympics. And she has many many medals and lots of accomplishments to be proud of. And now she's helping the next generation Excel. I think that's an awesome accomplishment.

Every time I watch this video and hear Al say "You get the feeling if she can just nail it once", I think of her routine at the 98 Nationals where she did nail and was rewarded with a 9.8. I thought then and now that if anything could get her past the worst of her bar problems, that routine would have been it, but it wasn't. The move to WOGA did her so much good, but I think it came a couple of years too late to restore her confidence in herself and her ability to do bars.

Bella intimidated her for too long. It is on utube. He is intimidating her and she falls off the beam. Very upsetting to me. Vanessa just didnt have the confidence. She was ultra sensitive and very affected by things. She was a beautiful gymnast. Marta was so wrong not to put her on the olympic team. But what goes around comes around and it came back around to Marta and Bella. Marta had a very weird vibe and U.S. gymnastics blindly gave her the reigns unquestioned.

She was politically majorly in favor in 98, which explains the super generous 9.8 which she is not worth on bars even with a totally hit routine. And she also had the Commaneci, which while I agree was smart to finally take out, was the flashy move she needed to give her more scoring potential on the event. This routine would have only scored around a 9.5 to 9.6 even if she had hit it. I still wish she had not headcased and made the Olympic team though. Her vault, beam, floor could have all contributed something to the US team score.
@DouglasAtherton-fd2wr11 ай бұрын
@@brendaannedufaur6244 The Karolyis were asses but they were not wrong to not put her on the Olympic team. She totally bombed at Nationals and Trials. I still might have put her on over Dawes who was outdated by this point, but Dawes contributed a huge bars score at the Olympics which Atler never in a million years would have done, and the top US beam score in team finals, which Atler could do even better hitting but she had become super inconsistent on beam in 2000, and pretty much any event. The big thing she would have added to the US team in 2000 if she didn't bomb was vault, but she messed up her vaults even pretty badly at Trials.

the problem was WOGA triggered her bulimia, weighing her three times a day (!!) and harping on her to do extra conditioning outside her normal full-day workout schedule.

@brendaannedufaur62444 жыл бұрын
It's not that she didnt really love gymnastics. She did. And she of course wanted to be on the Olympic team. They just made it too pressurized for her and it took the joy out of it but if she had gotten the right coaches early, she could have soared. Dominique Moceanu said she got to the point where she hated gymnastics due to the abuse of her father and Bella but when she got to a better situation away from them she loved gymnastics again and excelled.

She was an all arounder. If she made it to Sydney, she was going to do bars in qualifying in order to attempt to make it to the All Around final.
@DouglasAtherton-fd2wr11 ай бұрын
@@majormajors4326 If she had made the Sydney team I 100% guarantee she is sat out of bars, even in qualifying, and used on the other 3 events only. The only way she touches bars if if she is still one of the dominant 1 or 2 All Arounders in the US, and then they use her on bars in qualifying, and sit her off it in team finals, but after coming 4th at Nationals, even when she still looked like a lock for the team at that point, there was already no way she was touching bars at the Olympics, so that didn't need to be a real worry for her. Yes though in that day specialists were not a thing, you still had to compete on every event at meets like Nationals or Trials, unless you had some sort of injury petition.

I don't appreciate Tim chuckling at her mom hiding her head... Nothing about any of this was funny. What Bela (by coercing her away from Charter Oaks) and USAG did to Vanessa is right up there with their treatment of Kim Kelly and now, to a lesser degree, Laurie Hernandez. Participation in this sport is not for the team players or thin-skinned people of the world. I'm hopeful for the turning of the page - although it's a little scary to think that the "athlete representative" is someone who was coached by Al Fong... somehow that really doesn't sit well with me.

This routine has more difficulty than required for the 10 start value and a bunch of pirouettes she isn't good at, whyyyy? Poor thing, nobody ever gave her a suitable routine. It wasn't hard to get a 10 start in that code, look at this for example: *Straight jump to handstand 1/2 on low bar + Maloney + Bail + Stalder shoot *Straight cast handstand + Giant 1/1 + Tkatchev *Straddled cast handstand + Giant + Double Tuck full twist dismount
@jjs50562 жыл бұрын
This had horrible construction, but only 0.2 extra BP: 1. Giant 1.5 + Fwd Giant 1/2 + Giant 1.5 + Pak = X+C+D+D = 0.6 (X = Required 'D' VP / no BP) 2. Cast 1/2 + Stalder-shoot = C+C = 0.1 3. Tkatchev + Straddle back + Toe-shoot = D+C+C = 0.3 4. DLO 1/1 = E = 0.2 1.2 in BP. They should've left the DLO - she underrotated the DLO 1/1 throughout 00. At 99 Worlds, she had a very efficient routine: 1. Uprise 1/2 + Tkatchev + Uprise 1/1 + Pak = C+D+D+D = 0.7 2. Cast 1/2 + Shoot = C+C = 0.1 3. DLO 1/1 = E = 0.2 After a 9.475 in prelims, she botched it in TF+AA. Between 97-00, she fell on so many diff elements; so, while this set was too complex, she would've had issues regardless. Shap + Bail + Shoot combo would've been great, since she struggled with precision/pirouettes, releases, and endurance. Getting a lot of bonus from transitions would've been smart. My ideal set would be: Tkatchev + Uprise 1/2 + Pak = X+C+D = 0.3 Shaposhnikova/Maloney + Bail + Shoot = D+D+C = 0.5 DLO 1/1 = E = 0.2
@Zuranthium2 жыл бұрын
@@jjs5056 The toe-shoot was just a B in this code, so no bonus. That straddle back + shoot ends up adding no value to the routine, she already has enough bar changes and bonus points. Also for the Fwd Giant 1/2, it's extra difficulty because she has one hand in L-grip, that's why she hops to regular undergrip when rising up during the giant.
@jjs50562 жыл бұрын
@@Zuranthium Thank you for that info! I have NEVER been good at identifying forward grips, so this quad is usually a killer. SHE LEARNED L-GRIP work at WOGA and THIS WAS THE ROUTINE THEY CAME UP WITH? 1. Giant 1/2 to L-grip (C) + L-grip Giant (X - Req. D VP) + L-grip Giant 1/2 (D - 0.1) + 1.5 (D - 0.1) + Pak (D) = 0.4 CV + 0.3 DV = 0.7 BP 2. Cast 1/2 + Shoot = C + C = 0.1 CV 3. Tkatchev + Straddle Back + Shoot = C + C + C = 0.2 CV 4. DLO = D = 0.1 DV 10.0 SV Wow, what a crime. :(
