Clearly the most beautiful woman to ever live. This song came out in January of 1992. I was sad and young and lonely and hopeless. I heard this song while working at a bar/restaurant. It was late evening. There was light snow in a place that rarely ever has snow. And the woman who sings this song that night didn't, couldn't know it, but by her song, she gave me romance and the idea of love and happiness and hope. And now it's been a long time since then and maybe there was no real reason to hope for happiness after all. But that night I felt it and have never forgotten it. Even when it was new (I wasn't quite a kid anymore, but my parents are long gone now, too), it made me sad. So, I love all of the singers mentioned and I feel no need to deride any of them. In their vocal primes, all of them had beautiful voices, but obviously very different vocal ranges and singing styles. I happen to enjoy both styles of singing but for different reasons. And it largely has to do with my mood. Think all of them made beautiful songs, and it’s really a matter of stylistic preference. Vanessa has a very pleasant voice that’s very peaceful to listen to, but she also sings in a style that is easy enough to sing along to for the average person who isn’t a good singer. Whitney and Mariah also have beautiful voices, but because of their extraordinary power and range, they sing in a more complicated style that the average person can’t really sing along with. Vocal runs, power belting, and whistle notes are just things that most people can’t do. So it’s mostly about admiring their skill, than actually appreciating the lyrics of the music.
