Vanilla Planifolia (Orchid) Variegated Care Tips and Propagation - WITH UPDATES!

The vanilla planifolia is an interesting choice for a houseplant, precisely because it is the same species used in cultivation of vanilla beans. They are very easy to grow and the succulent like leaves and wildly-trailing qualities make this a gorgeous houseplant. You can grow it epiphitically up a tree/wall or you can let it trellis around itself. I share the full care tips as well as propagation in water, moss, and aroid potting mix - sharing you a satisfying update at the end of the video!

I have this plant too for about 4 years now, so let me share my experience. I have two variety of variegated vanilla, one of them is the same variety as yours. I grow it on chopped coconut husk and some on fermented rice husk + dried bamboo leaf. They both grow well. I put them under shading net west side of my house, no uv. The leaves get bigger when they climb into something and smaller when they hanging. I think bright indirect light is good for they to grow since direct sunlight often lead to sun burn. About propagation, I did single node, top cutting and 2 or 3 node, they grow well, as top cutting is the fastest, followed by 2, 3, 4 or more nodes, and single node cutting is the slowest. After I cut the stem, I rub it to remove the sap and apply fungicide. Here is the difference, after cut so many times, I come up with the best way for me is to lay it on the surface of soil, not stick it upward. You can add some soil on top of it so it doesn't move, but do your best not to burry the leaf. Keep it on humid and bright light place. I almost never find any pest, just some mealy bugs but just couple of them, you can remove it easily and yes their main problem is rot, so I do spray fungicide quite often especially during rainy season. So neat to see it growing up the tree. Wow, the leaves on your vanilla orchid are huge! I have a small plant growing indoors under an LED shop light, clipped to a trellis. It is slowly growing and healthy but after watching your video I’m going to start watering it more often (after changing the soil to a chunky, well draining mix). I also think I’m going to give it a sphagnum moss pole for the aerial roots. Thanks for sharing!

Oooh dont overwater it though they really hate to be waterlogged. Do fertilize lightly and often they seem to respond to that.

I was gifted a Vanilla (green). I love in Minnesota (Zone 6, i think?) My cat knocked mine down, and snapped it off right at the stem. Mine grows in a North Window on a trellis. I mist mine most days (if its already humid (summer, for me), i won't mist.) once a week or so in Late Spring, Summer, and Early Fall i fertilize. Last week or so, i moved some clippings to some Spagmum Moss 🤞they root. Lol

I have 2(1 each tahitensis and imperalis) for about 3 months now and have a varigated planiflora coming. I live in Mississippi, so very hot and humid during the summers. I put them on my shaded patio in the summer and water about once a week because it is so humid. They rooted and grew well during the summer. I have now brought them indoors for the winter and have them on a seed mat and under LED lights. I am hoping that keeps them happy until next summer.

Alocasias in general are hard… some of the jewel alocasias like the scalprum or similar textured ones are the hardest. The easiest might be the alocasia macrorrhiza. They are all spider mites prone and will 100% have it. So you have to do pest control on them 😀

Im not sure how many varieties of vanilla planifolia there are… although I imagine they would be selectively bred for traits that would allow them to bear fruit. But the ones we grow as houseplants are most likely not those variants. And yes you can pollenate them but I think the window of time is narrow and its not considered easy.

hello, vanilla planifolia is native to central america. however in southeast asia and specifically in the philippines there are other species of vanilla like calopogon and raabii which look almost the same. so probably you are blessed with one of those :')

I'm having major issues with my vanilla planifolia plant, I've slowly been reducing the original nursery plant into smaller and smaller cuttings as rotting has progressed... 😢 I live in Sweden so I keep my orchids indoors, all the phalaenopsis are fine but this one just keeps rotting no matter what I do... now I only have two small parts left, it's got a root or two into the medium which is orchid bark, sphagnum moss, and cinnamon powder. I keep it inside a mini greenhouse box to keep humidity high

Try to do single node cuttings, and spray them with fungicide. They might already have infection. Neem oil with soapy water makes excellent fungicide if you dont want to use chemicals.

@@onlyplants thank you for the advice 🙏 yeah I'm reluctant to use toxic substances but I have this time sprayed the two cuttings that are left with hydrogen peroxide which I had at home hoping it also has some fungicidal properties. And I have also let the cut dry and callous over for a couple hours before shutting them into the greenhouse box again. And I added a bright growlight as well. Hoping for a miracle 😅

Yes they can. And the flowers would most certainly be similar to the regular form. But variegated ones may have more difficulty in flowering due to less chlorophyll.

But how come my variegated vanilla is growing at an average rate of 1 new leaf opening per week; which some say is reasonably fast and quite comparable to a non-variegated one (hence it surprised them). ? I too, would be surprised that it's not affected/not significantly affected by the variegation! So how would the variegation increase the difficulty in flowering if its growth rate were to be comparable to a non-variegated one? However, If you think this is considered slow compared to typical commercial farms' fully-green non-variegated young plants , let me know too! Can I get or buy Gibberellin hormones to spray on the roots of the plant to induce flowering? In a study, Gibberellin hormones when sprayed on money plant Epipremnum aureum could induce flowering. For vanilla too; I suppose perhaps the Gibberellin hormones can help to induce flowering? If I try to spray Gibberellin , will it help them to flower more easily / earlier and/or abundantly ? It is a climber, an epiphyte in nature. The vines love climbing anything. In vanilla farms they are given trellis to clamor around ❤️😀
