A fantastic trip arounc old Sukhumvit cinemas, the former Ministry Of Sound nightclub, Klong Prem Prison, Washington Square, Soi Wanglee, Bangkok's tram system plus a few other landmarks now consigned to the dustbin of history. Some were destined to fail while others were miscarriages of justice, like the disgraceful Soi Wanglee fiasco which should never have happened.

Thanks for another great video, Pat. I remember going to that Villa supermarket at Soi 41, I think. I lived very close to Washington Square in the mid 80's and remember it well. Thailand and Bangkok has every right to modernise and determine its own future but they do need to decide how many of its old buildings can they destroy. When we were doing our walking tour I was amazed at how many old beautiful buildings that deserved to be preserved and lived in. Tourists such as myself won't come back for soulless shopping centres. Looking forward to many more visits.

I feel the same way about tourists and shopping malls. Here in the US, malls were very popular 20 years ago, before Amazon and online shopping. Do Thailand malls experience the same popularity in young people as we used to? One big draw is they are air conditioned.

@antonkarridian2895 in Australia it's the same as the USA, but as you say, Thailand is different due to the heat. Either way I have no intention of spending my time in these places but the food courts are very good compared to our western cities

Woke up and saw this post. Thought I’d treat myself before I start my day. Knew BKK in the late nighties for all the wrong reasons. Of course. lol. Before cctv and smart phones. Remember the drug raids and drink curfews. We would go down to din daeng and drink out of ice buckets. My wife and I left back 23 years ago to make our wealth then return. We’ve only got as far as Portugal for now while we do the final transition. Look forward to spending the last years of our lives in the warmth of Thailand. Re Old Cinemas, almost by default they turned to porn or "suck" (I leave that to the viewer imagination) theaters - which was quite common a phenomenon in SE Asia - as their last gasp before the bulldozer was called in. Phil Jablon (of the fascinating cinema blog mentioned above) did give the spotlight on one on Petchaburi whose cavernous lobby/first floor became the place to hang out for working belles in the neighborhood.

My home was Washington Sq btw the Silver Dollar and the Lone Star circa 1996-2008. The owner of the Lone Star now lives in Houston, Tx, USA and runs a restaurant there with her daughter. A lively bar after 9PM. Bourbon St for Holiday dinners were the best. Deny's Bar was my 1st bar in BKK and I lost my heart, and a large chunk of money. to an Isaan girl working there. Love this video! In the mid 2000s I used to go to a club called Bed or Beds? Had beds around the dance floor to lounge on. Really great place but I heard it closed down or maybe the concept just got old? Also there was a jazz bar called Brown Sugar. Didn't find it last time I visited in fact all of Sarasin Road looks quite different. Now that I'm thinking about it, in the early nineties the Dusit Thani hotel had a basement nightclub with a model spaceship that flew around the room and at the entrance to Sukhumvit Soi 10 or 11 there was a drinks bar built into and around a tree. Both it and its owner were landmarks. He once told me the richest man in Thailand had made his fortune selling the little paper umbrellas they put on cocktails. And I believed him! 😂 What else lets see, oh yes a roller-skating restaurant. This was perhaps a little out of town? Remember going with my parents as a very young child in the 80s. It was a huge sprawling open air restaurant and all the servers were on rollerskates. Good memories. 😊

The disappearance of BKK tram system seemed not to have bothered the populace too much because...Though that was before my time, my guess is who need trams when we have songthaews? (Though quite absent in Pat's vlogs,) they fill in the gaps left between city buses and pricey fai fa (Skytrain, MRT, etc.) A feature in the daily life of the poor/working class, they are also an quintessential part of public transportation, especially in the outskirts of the capital as well as in the provinces.

Excellent stuff Pat, maybe as a flip you could look at places which have survived the test of time, there's not many but I'm sure there's some, the Miami and Nana Hotels spring to mind even if they've been renovated.

Another top quality video! Thanks Pat. Would love to see some more info on the little lanes around Soi 11, including the old Swiss Hotel, Suk 11, Cheap Charlie’s etc…

Best take a walk if you're in the area! Not really much down there to be honest, apart from what you see on the maps.

Another amazing video showing the history of this great city. If you look at the segment showing the Trocadero Hotel, you will see that next door is the offices for BOAC (British Airways), and on the street is, I believe, an Aston Martin BD5 with UK Plates, and behind it, an Austin A40 estate car, 2 historic English cars, in the middle of Bangkok.

I love the level of production and all the information. The captions, the Bangkok Pat man make this very easy to follow. We only had four days in Bangkok for Christmas 2023 and had to leave without enough time to explore everything. These videos by Bangkok Pat help me explore more and appreciate this great city. I'm so happy and appreciative of your effort Mr Bangkok Pat! When I go back to Bangkok, I'll be so prepare after watching months of Bangkok Pat's documentaries!

You should really start up your own Podcast, Pat. You could include stories about Bangkok, interviews with other Thailand explorers, travel guides etc. I think it would do really well!
