this is rather "learning a sword fighting choreography in 10 hours". They're basically avoiding all the techniques that you would do in a real sword fight (e.g. keep the tip of the blade towards your opponent to always present a threat etc.)
@sorokahdeen
@sorokahdeen 4 жыл бұрын
That notion, that of keeping the point towards your opponent at all times, depends on the weapon and the technique of using it. With a weapon specialized for stabbing, the idea makes perfect sense. For, say, a katana, not so much.
@chopstick1671
@chopstick1671 4 жыл бұрын
M K not entirely true, we often keep our point aimed at the opponents eyes in historical fencing to both hide our range and present an immediate threat; as long as the weapon has the option to thrust it is useful, it depends more on the range you are on however, some ranges it is better to keep the weapon chambered up to hide your range then to present the point. But even katanas use the point so it is good to present the point in range 2 (sorry Im used to german school of longsword and we have different ranges, range 2 is basically: I can hit you with either no steps or a little step)

It is fun, there are all kinds of things, there is stage fighting (like in the video), which is not how you would use a sword but is very fancy; you have historical fencing, which is fencing aimed at how you would use historical weapons (mainly in duels) both armoured and unarmoured; and you have modern fencing, which in my opinion is not really sword fighting anymore since the rules are so restrictive and the ‘swords’ are not used like swords.

What CD would give a role so dependent on sword skills to someone with zero sword skills when there are so many excellent people that have spent years and thousands of pounds on learning the craft - unless of course she claimed she could? She seemed to learn well but as anyone who knows about this sort of thing will tell you, learning the choreo is one thing performing it under pressure with blocking and lines is quite another.

This Is just choreography. You do this in a real sword fight against an average HEMA practitioner, and you're dead within 5 seconds or less. Don't get my wrong, it looks really cool and entertaining, but it is also misleading for a lot of people who actually think such clumsy techniques are effective or even historical. There are many ways in which you can make a sword fight look cool without making it extremely exaggerated and completely useless in a real fight, like the way used in The Knight of Hope: a short film produced by a small studio with knowledge on the subject. If they can do it properly, Hollywood could take it to the next level
