The grandpa in me is reading these comments feeling like we really have gone off the rails as a country to see all these women saying they have experienced these things. What has happened to us as a country that we don't raise our boys better. It is never okay to hurt a woman, to make them feel uncomfortable and they should instead be protected. They are our daughters and our mothers. What is wrong with these men today. I am sorry Bunny you had to have a troublesome situation but I am more sorry for all these women here that have had these problems. From this grandpa and retired military member I am sorry.

The statistics of 40 years ago were that one in four females had experienced some sort of sexual abuse. I doubt that was ever a valid study. There is no doubt in my mind that the incidence of this type of abuse is much greater than 25%.

This is NOT new behavior. Weird, creepy male behavior has been going on for … centuries. We didn’t have media or social media to readily share information in the past, so it feels like it’s more rampant in the present, even though it’s not.

I always favor on caution and trusting my gut and when someone is outside yelling loudly at a campsite then continuing to have strange behavior you have to worry about self.. the thing that got me was him staring into my van... that was a lot based on how he was acting and knowing he was also driving around while possibly drunk does not seem settling either... so caution in movement is important

Drunk does not mean not dangerous. So you we’re smart to leave. Usually drunk means more dangerous at least in social settings. I’ve gone out a lot and seen guys who get drunk and then start fights because they’re just drunk. I’ve seen lots of guys who’ve gotten drunk who then try to go up to women and get mad whenever the women don’t want them to flirt with them even sometimes trying to block them from getting into their cars just because they’re drunk. Drunk should never be an excuse for bad behavior, but unfortunately for a lot of men it is.

I absolutely agree... i have seen my fair share of drunk people men and women and in doing so have learned that it is never good to stick around when someone is over the limit so to speak.... big difference in action between tipsy and drunk... not everyone is going to be the boogey man but those who are the wrong kind of drunk usually result in bad things... safety will always be the most important thing for me

I'm a solo woman with long hair, and I have put my hair up in my hoodie hood many times for the exact same reason. A baseball hat is a good idea. There have been situations wherein I felt much safer when people assume I'm a man in my van instead of a petite solo woman. I hate having to leave a good site because of some random creeper, but I do it every time rather than stay and wonder. Even if nothing more happened, I wouldn't get great sleep after an encounter like that. You did the right thing. Always trust your gut, and you'll never regret it. After 40+ years of solo RVing as a woman I learned to trust my instincts. So you were smart. By now you know that if something feels off then most likely you don’t want to stick around. I even had an incident where I was staying in a paid campground and I had to throw the owner out of my trailer. Seems that as a lone female he thought I was a prostitute! Turns out later I found out that there are some ladies in that profession that use outfitted vans in order to ply their trade. Just be aware of that if ever approached by strange men. Another time I set up in a State Park but my neighbors who moved in later didn’t seem right so even when getting dark and not knowing where else to go I wound up staying on a side road and hoping no cops ousted me out of there. Glad I did later as it was reported next day of gangs shooting up that park just after I had left!

Oh no that sounds like a terrible situation to be in that would be scary.... also the second incident terrifying but exactly why we all have to be aware of our surroundings and trust our guts.. the fact is we don't know other people the way we know ourselves... we might be there for positive reasons but others might not be... some people are just on vacation.. others are leaving their lives to avoid police and trying to go under the radar.. knowing all those people exist together makes you more aware of being careful with who you interact with at remote campsites or paid ones.

Any doubt, an error on the side of caution is much more preferable than not trusting your instincts and possibly ending up in a negative situation. Even if it is just eases your anxiety, getting away from whatever you are feeling weird about is a good choice. As a fellow female soloist, I think you made the right decision. People are unpredictable even when they are not acting unusual, so when they are being somewhat erratic, it can be unnerving to say the least. Best to just move on and find something else to enjoy without the stress.

We also make it known when we go to school that I am a part of my daughters life and know everything that way no one at school thinks it is okay to talk to my kid inappropriately. I have been in several situations where I’ve been leaving the grocery store or out with my friends and I have had strange man either approach or say something that was kind of scary and as women we have to be careful way more than men do. The view is as fragile, and because of that, they think that it’s OK to be terrible and do horrible things. I would never want to sleep at a place that someone was acting erratic so I don’t blame you for leaving. I think that that was very smart and comes from experience and education.

Yes, sadly if you speak to women a lot of them have encountered some kind of weird thing where they had a stranger danger moment. Everyone should be aware of their surroundings but especially women. We statistically are targeted and sometimes hunted for being considered weaker and no amount of protection or mindfulness can stop that it is a behavior which sadly is way to common. We have been taught that what we wear, how we walk, what we say and how we exist can be a problem if a man is triggered by that. I think the bigger story is we all should instead (men and women) be taught to be kind and considerate and not push ourselves on one another in any capacity and mind our own business instead of bothering others in an in person way. But sadly that isn't the case

We can wear clothes that are considered to be modest by standards such as sweatpants, and it doesn’t matter. We can dress like Amish and it doesn’t matter. it isn’t an all men thing unfortunately, it is a some men thing, however, and the other men are not holding those men accountable. I doubt if it had anything to do with you being female though, because with the hat and the distance and the window glass it was likely impossible to tell that you were not a guy.

I had gotten out when i first arrived and he had seen me... i was clearly wearing bright colored leggings....so i was like well lets confuse him a bit if he did see me.... i wanted to safely assess.... this isn't the norm as you know but when weird things happen being clear of mind is important

@@BunnyPlaysHere Oh okay I didn't realize that he had seen you outdoors. I can understand then why you were uncomfortable. Leaving was likely the best option, if for no other reason than peace of mind through the night. My very first time boondocking with my RV after I retired was just outside the ghost town/mine of Bonnie Claire, Nevada. I'm an astrophotographer, and I had just gotten the RV set up and was indoors when a van about 40 years old with all the paint burnt off most of it from the sun went roaring past within 10 feet of the front door with his horn blaring. leaving a big cloud of dust. I was actually a bit confused if it was a drunken enthusiastic greeting by a local, or the opposite from a local. It was a good spot for the dark skies, and it had taken some effort to get there and get set up just in time for the dark sky period of the month. I did not want to pack up and leave. So I didn't. The next morning he was back, and this time he backed his van up to the gate of the fenced ghost town/mine site a few hundred yards away. He then opened the back door of his beat up van and about 6 to 8 dogs that I think were Dobermans went running into the compound. He waited 5 minutes and then called them back and herded them back into the van. He then stood for about 30 seconds staring straight at my RV, and into my telesphoto camera lens where I got a good pic of his face from the dark interior of the RV. After glaring at me he left, and he never came back for the two weeks I was there. I did stay close enough to the RV with my Golden Retriever that we could always get back to it if I saw him approaching in the distance. I have no doubt this guy would have released all his dogs on mine if given the chance, just for entertainment. In the photo I have of his face, he looks really angy and hostile. He was dirty, around 40 years old, and combined with the beat up, paintless van, he really did look like a hostile psycho. After thinking about it for a while, I have a feeling that he might be a local who was hiried by whoever now owns the ghost town/mine site to keep people out of it - and he was trying to scare me away from the area, thinking that the ghost town was the reason I was there. I assume when he released his dogs he was hoping I was trespassing and would get bitten if I was. Just after taking his pic I did post it on my Facbook page and explained that this is who the cops should be looking for if anything happened to me. Fortunately it never went any further, and I had no more trouble with him. So that was my introduction to boondocking. :) Fortunately that was also my only spooky incident in 7 years so far.

Seems like the kind of thing my dad used to do when he was super drunk. Just wander around aimlessly, doing random things. He wasn't a violent man towards anyone except us. Maybe your guy was airing out the RV if he left something that should have been cleaned out. But in your case, you don't want to wait around he works up the nerve to do God knows what. Plus drunks aren't any fun unless you're drunk with them. 🤣🤣

I always try to make sure that before I get out and get comfortable I really survey the area most the time I do this in a way that most would not be alarmed by me even being there because I do it all from the front seat. However, after I get out of the campsite, I walk around to make sure there’s nothing harmful there That they haven’t been a poacher in the area because that has happened and then I also make sure that it doesn’t look as though I am in an area that if it rains, I will get flooded. These are all strange things that I have built into my routine that normally I don’t talk about because I don’t want people to think that this should be their checklist because it might not apply to how they personally travel, but from this point, I was clearly able to see that Something was not OK with this guy whether it was just again that he was drunk or if it was something different either way I’m happy that I left

You stayed longer than I would! I feel much safer in most situations because I have a large, very watchful dog. As I have short hair and almost always wear hats (and sometimes get misgendered), I don’t necessarily look like a disabled senior woman, but I pay attention to my gut, and my dog’s, and will leave quickly if needed.

@BunnyPlaysHere

I thought that would be a possibility because I had seen a bunch of the news about that as well. It didn’t look like it had been abandoned and in a bad type of way this was a free campsite so I thought well maybe people are just away, but the more that I continued to put the logic together, it did look as though he owned the RV by the fact that he could immediately get into it without really having to do too much, it was still very odd and didn’t wanna be part of it no matter what

I'm glad you posted this, it's a very good learning opportunity, especially for solo females on the road. To me, the fact that the truck parked next to the RV and got out and then went and parked elsewhere but didn't leave-- that was already enough information that the person was up to no good. To save agony in the future, any time someone pulls into one place, fiddles with an RV, and then goes and parks somewhere else but doesn't leave (or any variation on that)? That's by definition already suspicious behavior that shouldn't require any further consideration about whether they are acting weird or not. Someone acting that way is liable to blow up at a woman nearby just to let off steam, and they are definitionally already up to no good. [I would differentiate this behavior from someone who pulled into a vacant campsite and then drove to a different campsite, but that's manifestly different behavior.] Back in my frequent travel days, twice I had it happen where I was sleeping in a rest stop AT NIGHT and had some guy approach my vehicle, but at that time I traveled with a dog who started barking long before I was in danger and the guy ran away. By the time I got my head up above the covers that's all I saw, was the back of the guy. But from that I learned that if a solo woman pulls into a rest stop at night, gets out and uses the facilities, and then parks to sleep there, there is a chance that someone has observed and may attempt something. I don't do that anymore. If it's nighttime and I pull over to sleep, I don't get out of the vehicle, I do my business in the vehicle and wait till morning OR such time as I'm ready to drive again. Anyway, just adding another caution to this one. Wishing you safety and peace.
