The Alford Desert is a massive expanse of a dry lake bed in South East Oregon. If you want to find solitude in your 4x4 Sprinter van this is the place. It's quiet, peaceful and flat as a pancake sitting right underneath the Steens Mountains making for a very dramatic place to explore in your Winnebago Revel. It also features dazzling displays of stars on a clear dark night. This area shouldn't be overlooked for any overland expedition through the Pacific Northwest. It's a contrast to the huge trees and rainforests normally envisioned of Oregon.
This is part of the Southbound series where Peter and Kathy are driving the Pan-American from Dead Horse/Prudehoe Bay, Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina at the very bottom of South America. This will be a 18 month roadtrip of a lifetime.
