Scarborough Council TALKING about banning campers, but it's not in place yet. The biggest problem with this kind of camper are people who set up as if they are on a campsite. Awning and bbq etc.

Nowt to do with Scarborough. I live here and the ban is still going ahead. Its all come from other locals who don't want vanlifers around here. Yes the litter is an issue, as is the gray and waste water. There has been a point installed where you can dispose of it but too many people don't. Personally, I like the whole van life community. However, there needs to be more self policing and calling out of those who don't look after the areas. Leave No Trace. Live it Love It One Life!

From my experience from wild camping, campsite stays in tents, and the occasional vehicle sleep in an emergency, its the vast majority of Van lifers and motor home people ruining it. Camped all over the north Uk for the past 30 years plus and noticed camper vehicle types seem to think the rules do not apply to them.

Its not the Scarbrough ban. Redcar and Cleveland is the coastal area of Middlesbrough. They are referring to Saltburn pier and South Gare which has always been a van hotspot. Its about an hour or so drive north of Scarborough. Same coast though 🤣

when using my van conversion boondocking in the UK I have only ever witnessed cars owners leave rubbish, mainly I believe because they dont have the right facilities on board ie rubbish bags porta potty etc + the general attitude seems to be that the council will come & clear up after them. Camper van owners get unfairly blamed. There should be big wheelie bins everywhere emptied on a regular basis ( like they have in France ) Which would help

Rivelin Valley Conservation Group Car Park is free, far enough away from the road that you can’t hear cars, it always has campers in there and it’s minutes from Higger Tor etc. I stop there days at a time and have for years with never an issue

It's like most things, instead of coming down hard on the people who litter and leave waste, it's easier for councils to ban. How easy would it be to have a couple of cameras up in these areas and the facility to pay £5 per night which could fund some bins, a tap and possibly an elsan point? I for one would be happy to pay. PS The fine money from people who litter could go to this too and other vanners would also be happy to provide evidence against them?

@@robwilcox561 I detest littering and while you do make a fair point, I think if an area is known to attract a lot of visitors then in my opinion it really should be down to the council to provide bins. I think the uk has a culture of just creating legislation, fines or taxes to deal with problems, and that as a society we have been conditioned into accepting that when we really should stand up for ourselves more. I understand that councils have no money but when we stop to see some of the ways that public money is being spent, there comes a point where we should say enough is enough. I wouldn’t pay £5 to park on a public road. In the situation where I was unable to find an ethical park up without a fee I would be forced to park in a residential street - and nobody wants that.

They councils should make a few parking place for vans .why dont they let motorhomes use P&R at night even if it was a small fee. I know it's a real busy spot up near Castleton, but I love it there. Spent a good few nights along that road with my dog. Loads of walks & pubs nearby. Beautiful area with lovely views. I visited Scarborough at Easter and it was rammed with motor homes on Marine Drive, probably doing long stay cheap holiday, no parking spaces for normal day trippers, so that’s one side. The other side: I think there’ll be a loophole in the law with what they’re doing re the ban, for example are other types of vehicle allowed to park overnight?! A fine can ONLY be issued by a court end of, and ONLY a DRIVER can be fined. (Are you a ‘driver’, are you operating in commerce, if not you are not a ‘driver’). Find the loophole. Don’t do anything without understanding this completely, you’ll know when you do and even then it’s not easy. I have personal experience of Scarborough Council and Marstons debt enforcement, they came to my home and clamped me, not nice, luckily I got the clamp removed with my knowledge.

With regard to the cave, caves can have very narrow passages you have to crawl through. Accoriding to a father that goes caving with his son, you should go caving as impossible to get stuck in the narrow crawl spaces. However quite a few people have died in them, clearly they didnt know you cant get stuck.

We went to Whitby in February and stayed in the car park near the Abbey with 19 other vans. Parking was free. In the season the council would have made £9 X 20 = £180. Why don’t they just charge all year round up there? £180 a day would more than cover a bit of litter picking! Though people should leave no trace of course. Whilst there we bought stuff at Mountain Warehouse, Yorkshire Trading, fish and chips, doughnuts and beer, lots of beer! We spent over £130 on a rainy February weekday. All that money going in to the local economy to help keep businesses afloat through the winter.

In Plymouth there is an ideal spot for vans to stay overnight. It's near a public slip and a public toilet. Free parking. The trouble is some van lifers abuse it by parking awkwardly. They block access to the slipway. Empty their toilets into the river/sea. They haven't got the common sense to bugger off and go somewhere else during the day, mostly weekends during the summer, whilst locals are trying to use the slipway and then come back in the evening. Now the council have put double yellows everywhere reducing the available parking for everyone. One van was taking up three spaces by parking across them instead of parallel parking. I know there's loads of you out there who wouldn't do it but there's enough who do and you all get tarred with the same brush.

I work in Scarborough and cover all of North Yorkshire with a very stressful job. I usually go for a camp out on my last late shift to unwind and soak in the peace by the sea. NYC have knee jerked to a small amount of complaints from locals about litter and "not being able to park" In Scarborough the litter is mostly left by tent campers who just abandon everything like a music festival. As for parking, it's utter bs, there are always spaces especially in the evening when the cars have gone. It's a ridiculous decision and brought on by misinformation and prejudice/ jealousy. This will effect my mental health and many others I'm sure.

I live in a beautiful part of scarborough in a Quiet street, free parking but can never get parking outside my house with all the horrible campervans and white vans. I counted 20 this morning. They all come here as it's free parking and public loo near by..three neighbours are selling up because of it and I'm moving soon. I saw aerial videos of a festival or something in redding. There was discarded used tents and litter as far as the eye can see. Dont hear much of an uproar about it. But you get councils banning van dwellers even when they havent littered at all! Ive got an idea. why don't the police actually fine people on an individual basis, when people have actually done something wrong rather than discriminating agaginst an entire community? That was a rhetorical question. I think we all know the reasons why. I mean, how hard is it to have adequate bins for waste disposale. Or adequate parking? As for vanlifers littering. It only takes one to do it with some photographic evidece (real or fabricated) for some coucil busy body and the media to blow it all out of proportion. The old tricks are the best i guess.
