One of the jobs that you can apply for while visiting the Quartzsite RV Big Tent Show Jan 22-30th in Quartzsite... is the job of the Campground Host. In this video my friend Brian Gifford shows you exactly what it is like and what the job responsibilities are. Brian has been a campground host for 12 years and has a lot of great experience!

This was great! LOL So there must be downsides to this job. What about rowdy or rude customers? How is that handled? Or any other problems not in your job description? Is it outlined in your contract when you need to be present, or do you just make your own daily schedule as it seemed presented here? Maybe each campground is different? Do you ever work with others? I once saw a KZbin couple that worked together and where they actually had a little store they had to manage. I assume there is someone above you who handles more major issues and maintenance? Sorry about all the Q's. This is a job my husband and I may consider in the near future. Oh, I also heard sometimes you may host small events like morning coffee or evening fire? Thanks for this video Bob! Glad you aren't going away! Bless you both.
@briangifford7023
@briangifford7023 2 жыл бұрын
There will occasionally be a rowdy group, but they are typically few and far between. That is something you should definitely ask the hiring people. But there is always a manager that can step in to handle things if people aren't following the rules and you've given it your best effort. We also have maintenance people who do the major stuff, so not really your responsibility (typically). Your schedule is typically flexible, though again, that depends on your specific employer. I'd say give it a try and see if you like it!

I would say the sooner you get to the big tent, the better. All of these companies are really just looking to fill the spots as quickly as possible, so you increase your chances the earlier you go. I can't speak to the lines that form, though...it's been 12 years since I had to apply that way.

In the mid 80’s My wife, two small children and I were the first volunteer campground host family ever at Lackawanna State Park located in Northeast PA. We had pitched the idea to Ranger Jerry Frost and he opened the program up. We did this for 5 summers starting in a pop up then into our brand new 24 foot Nomad travel trailer. If someone asked my daughter what state she lived in she would say “State Park”. Those were great years, we have many happy memories and funny stories. I always wanted to be a campground host in retirement, sadly that is not happening. Brian, I really enjoyed watching your host routine and am envious of your nomadic life. Thank you gentlemen for a great video. ☮️ & ❤️

I do keep busy, but there is ample free time to enjoy yourself. You are paid 8 hours, but some of those hours will be used in the evening checking customers in and doing paperwork. That gives you some flexibility during the day to go play! I still get 2 days off a week where I can go wherever I want. They have another host come check on your campground in your absence.

@briangifford7023
@briangifford7023 2 жыл бұрын
Many of my co-workers were retired, but there are still a few of us making our living do it. The pay is usually minimum wage, though depending on the state, that could be quite high. The bonus is that you don't have to pay for your site and since you won't be constantly moving around every 2 weeks, you save a ton on gas. Depending on how long the season is, you could make make somewhere in the range of $9,000 - $15,000. Keeping your spending down, this is very doable for being your only job.

um...yes? Kinda? Haha. Sometimes not at all. I make sure to put up multiple signs for them to see. I also printed up and laminated my own "Welcome" sign that explained how to register and what to do. It helped answer many of their questions. In the end, though, the best way to have them honor the sign is to simply not be there! I'm usually out hiking or backpacking.

@@briangifford7023 that’s funny. Because honestly I would be conflicted. 😂 I’d see the sign, but then see that the screen door is open. Hello Kim! I've worked for the same company for 12 seasons, but not all at the same location. Mostly I've been in the Sierra Mountains in California, but also spent 1 summer in Colorado and 2 summers in Oregon. I had my dog for the first 11 of those seasons and it worked out great. She could come with me on all my rounds. Never had to leave her behind...it was great!!

I miss the video you did previously for insight you have. Many Christians are tired of bills and thought about escaping and living in Van. This system traps people, but where is our duty after Exodus? Hope you may encourage some Christians campers share some insight through this channel besides some better way of living which is necessary sometimes. Our goal is not going back to Egypt. Blessings.

Bob - Haha! Laughed out loud when the campground host didn't recognize you! Hilarious role play. Did you paint your ambulance to match the cactus? Please don't totally leave the videos for a long while. Brian - Zen like bathroom cleaning? I almost fell over:) My Grandfather was a Forest Ranger at Squaw Mountain Fire Lookout in Colorado. What campground is this? -it is lovely. Welcome. How are you going to switch over and teach people to find awesome boondocking spots? ... Great video:)

Subscribed! Trying to think of ways to live more a traveling lifestyle. Growing up camping, always thought it would be great to be a host, forest ranger or anything to be outside near or in the wild. Just recently, I could use a stress less lifestyle. Not worried about riches. To me, being rich is being happy.

Great information and great segment. Bob is very much appreciated and you stepping in when needed is invaluable. You're gonna have to learn the theatrical and patented pause in between the words "next"........and "video". Curious what your compensation is for doing this type of work. And do you have time on days off to leave the park to go camp elsewhere? Or do you have to remain on site even when off duty for a couple of days in a row. Thanks so much for sharing and for the positive energy and attitude.

Thank you Bob & Brian for the vids ! I'm really interested in the gate guarding, but flying solo seems to make that a difficult thing atm. Host is a very close second for me as I absolutely love camping.

Great job Brian! You're making me want to go back to the forest and Camp Host ;) you know Lupe and I have worked in the Sierras for two seasons and enjoyed every minute of it. We also worked one summer in Big Bend at Rio grande village and loved that too. We had amazing, life changing experiences Everytime we camp hosted. I have also volunteered several Winters at Texas state parks/natural areas and made life-long friends there.
