Fellow cyclist here. I'm so attracted to this lifestyle. It's so interesting seeing the day-to-day logistics. I would find it a bit stressful moving locations multiple times a day to avoid breaching local rules and regulations. Also I'd be kind of nervy at night parking in a secluded location. Living the nomadic life has its pros and cons. But at least you can say you're free and you're never far from home.

There are times where I just would like to not move during the day, but then I can find a free camp out of town to do exactly that. The night time nerves....yeah, but you get a feel for it over time and you becomes less nervous. I still keep an eye out though when I hear cars close by....not easy, but well worth it overall.😁

Loved the multi drone footage, looks like you guys had lots of fun. It’s so stupid that you can’t even sleep in your vehicle on someone’s property. Glad you’re ‘hypothetically’ finding a way around it lol

Great video Jason. Good lord, Melbourne laws are really tight for van life folk. They give no quarter down there, so it seems. Anyway I enjoyed your footage and the drone wars in the park were great. A few of the drones looked quite tiny. Enjoy your travels and living that great van life. Cheers, Sean.

Wow, nice sunny weather there. I lived there for 3 months in 2001 between March and June and the overcast days turned into weeks and months. A depressing (and bloody cold) experience it was for a Queenslander but the people were great, as was the cycling and public transport infrastructure.

Yeah....though I don't think they enforce it very strictly. I guess it gives the council power to do something if people lodge complaints...

1. It’s Victoria and 2. It’s Australia. This country has federal, state, and local govt. In other words laws on laws, on laws. I’m surprised there aren’t any laws on your sleeping position.

Great video as always - I find the whole (can't sleep in the vehicle) thing really interesting and contradictory given that it is also illegal to drive when fatigued and there are signs everywhere telling people to stop revive and survive - so I am guessing the powers that have decided that sleeping in a vehicle is not a legitimate way to revive and continue driving safely? Very weird. (Under section 10 of the Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Standard 2010 (the Standard), a driver of a public passenger vehicle must not operate a vehicle while fatigued.)
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces 15 күн бұрын
That's actually one of the favourite "get out of jail" cards that people keep suggesting in the vanlife forums....not sleeping, just fatigued. I think trying to use that when in your vans bed next to the beach might be a stretch 😂
@MarkZX14R
@MarkZX14R 15 күн бұрын
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces I agree .. I think the contradiction is funny - but there are plenty of those in different legislations. As a person living near the water in QLD and having a brick-and-mortar home I have no issue with the vans I see around here. I can't really understand begrudging people having access to basic human needs like water, and shelter. I think they (they, being councils) would be far better off having a good set of clear rules and support system (like water and toilet emptying facilities) around it so it is well managed rather than just saying no - I mean people are going to do it anyway.

@MakingStuffGoingPlaces
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces 14 күн бұрын
@barbarabruce7648 hi Barbara. I would suggest the Bodalla rest area at Narooma. It's got walks straight from the campground, MTB Park across the road, toilets and water...plus a short drive to Narooma which is beautiful. When I stop in state forests, I just find a clearing and park. No amenities and usually not very picturesque. Just somewhere to sleep.

Hey Cameron, just remembered that my milk sometimes goes off....mainly in summer and only when I have it in the door. It doesn't get any airflow because of the veggie crisper and other bottles, so tends to not stay cold enough. You can turn the fridge down a bit more, but then my ice cream is too hard 😂

I also find the whole argument about stealing water ridiculous Jason. You are in the community and spend money on groceries and fuel etc in the area but they whine about 25-40c of water! I'm fairly certain that anyone taking council's water more than makes up for it by supporting local businesses through purchases like groceries and other essentials. It would be interesting to find out how to acquire a permit for sleeping in vehicles overnight. If a permit is required, surely it should be obtainable - or am I just being completely delusional?
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces

I'd imagine that it would be similar to getting a permit to fly a drone in a national park....by all accounts, they just won't grant one.

I noted the rubbish next to his van in that unnamed carpark. It’s OK for drivers to dump their rubbish in public places everywhere but heaven forbid if middle aged polite tidy community minded van dwellers spend a single night there.
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces 15 күн бұрын
I guess the problem is we are there for longer, so the only things people see in the park are vans....the grots that leave the rubbish eat their midnight Macca's then take off 🙄 leaving all their rubbish behind.

Your water argument is weak because water authorities make money from the connection and sewage changes. Water is cheap, the infrastructure is not. BTW in Victoria I note some councils are now charging for dump points.
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces 14 күн бұрын
Personally I wouldn't be against paying a reasonable amount for access to water and dump points, exactly for the reasons you mention. I guess in reality though, there would be so few people using that facility that it would never pay back.
