Love these old things. The quad headlights look so much better on them than the so-called 'fishtanks'. Willson was a quality presenter too, always enjoyed watching his segments. Guy really knows his onions!

I second that Eric George well said sir! Yes back then in the early Nineties I always looked forward to watching Top Gear on BBC2 & presenters like Quentin Willson always offered good proper customer advice on buying certain second hand cars! I miss his dry wit & dead pan sense of humour I sure do & I bet you do too! Unlike Top Gear now which is just not good & not worth watching at all & is merely sandpit entertainment!

I would love to see a motoring programme for adults where cars are tested in cities and on motorways rather than driven round an airfield till its tyres explode and there is genuine advice for drivers.

For all those people who've never owned and driven one of these,let me tell you,yes some were badly built,especially in the seventies.I've owned a silver Series 2 and a Series 3 in Grey,both V12 Daimlers.They are not cheap to run,service and maintain.Buy a good one and run it as a second car on a classic insurance policy and keep on top of it and you'll have a wonderful weekend car.

We have had an XJ6 since 1998, it is more reliable than our 2009 Mercedes Benz GL320, and our 2001 ML320 (dead car practically). We have never had an issue with the car, except for a small crash, which was repaired nice and swiftly.

+PF ML of that era are all dead. But have you seen how E class of 1996 - 2002 look like now, you don't see them, they are piles of rust somewhere. Surprised about the newer GL tho
@venaautos

The new GL has surprised me too! It took my mum by surprise also. They tried to scam us of $6000 for power steering fluid, we went to a workshop, paid a way lower price, power steering fixed.

PF whoaaa! Unless there's warranty, no reason to go to dealer, used to be for some computer work you had to, now so many places have the Star system or whatever the disagnostics needs. I have SL55 from 2004, and SL600 1995. Maybe I've been lucky, knock on wood, but no major anything. And I kept reading on forums to stay away from v12 engines, service insanely expensive and so on.. all bullshit, never had engine issues, all that goes is ABC suspension, the rubber gaskets inside shocks, they just rot, and replacement in Europe are 2400 Eur each. But those caskets can be replaced in many places now. They take lots of gasoline tho lol, the 600 is unbelievable, gas just runs through it lol

A thing I have realized with reviews is that if people have a negative review, they share it, but if you have a positive review you don't. Which is pretty true. If you go to a tech store and buy a TV, and everything is nice and smooth you buy it and go back for more stuff. If the store dude is rude, treats you like garbage, you will go online and tell people to avoid. Our GL is a GL320 CDI, it's a diesel V8.

Had a '91 XJ6 that started failing the day after I bought it. About every 30 days something else would fail - sunroof, fuel pump, belt idler, trans computer (loved to shift from first to overdrive and lock up in OD until warmed up or engine restart). Sold as salvage. Not long after, bought a '95 XJ6 that had been sitting and after cleaning the fuel tank (water), it's been terrific for almost 20,000 miles now. They say '95-'97 are the best years.

XJ40s are pretty reliable - the six cylinder engine is especially long lasting and is one of the longest lasting engines fitted to any car. They don' t go wrong much in reality. They are no more expensive to run than any big car of their age. Early XJ40s with a digital dash had a lot of electrical problems, but later cars have less electrical problems than the average car. All XJ40 automatics are 4 speed: the 4 litre six uses the ZF4HP24; the litre V12 uses the GM4L80E transmission. Rust is the problem with the XJ40 - they can rust a lot. Other than rust, they are very robust. It is an odd thing, the belief in the unreliability of Jaguars of this era. It seems prevalent on KZbin - much more than it does on car forums. But I guess people here have only a passing interest on cars, so go more for the old stereotypes.

db db I bought a 88 xj40 3.6 in the 90's for $200 that suffered a timing chain failure at 120k miles. I bought an engine off a guy on a message board (pre-ebay days) and was driving it 2 days after I got it. I loved the car, it was beautiful fully loaded and even had the dayton wire wheels but the had terrible electrics. The climate control went out, the antilock brakes never worked the whole time I had the car and cruise worked when it felt like it. Parts at that time in the states were hard to find and expensive. I ended up selling the car soon after and made a good profit off it. I still miss that car, I never felt I could trust it 100% but damn was it pretty to look at. I have since gotten into Mercedes and as of now own a S600 Lorinser that is light years better than the Jag but it's not without it's problems either.

Just got a '90 Vanden Plas for free in August. 103K, metallic black exterior, light tan interior... needed brakes, headliner re-do, a passenger rear window (broken into in Seattle) a battery, and some small cosmetics. Glass? $17.99 + tax. Brakes? About $400. Headliner? $300. Did the grunt work myself. Needs a couple cosmetic things addressed, fluid change- I'll be in it less than $2K, give it to my dad in the Spring

This...makes me depressed. I had a 1991 XJ6 Sovereign 4.0. By far the best car I have ever owned. I however was st00p1d when I bought it and didn't do the research first. Had rampant electrical problems, oil pressure was nought when I accelerated, and the hydro-electric brake system failed and was extremely expensive to fix. Really wish I had seen this video before I got her. But, I still miss her. Really hard to find in the US.

HUH! That is why you can still see old Lexus models still running like a champ while you see old Jaguar models are either at the repair shop, or at the junkyard. Id rather have a vehicle that has a soul like a toaster and built to last forever than a car than can last only for a few years and go broke on repairs. You buy a car to drive it, not to stare at it. You have it in reverse you glib.

Interesting stuff. There are videos on YT documenting their extensive testing and development programme for the XJ40, and it took ten years to develop! - it looked so comprehensive! Surprised when they came out how many problems there were considering all that testing. A lot of it down to complex and crap Lucas electrics too no doubt. They took them everywhere, all over the world in hot climates, cold climates racking up thousands upon thousands of miles yet they still couldn't iron out all the issues that should have been picked up during testing.

@tomsmith9208
@tomsmith9208 3 жыл бұрын
Top gear (or whatever survives as and is passed off as ‘top gear’ now) would never do a review of any 8 or so year old second hand luxury barge of any make now, because if you were to sit next to an owner of one while driving, and ask genuine questions about the car as Quentin does here, they would all be tales of woe, “this packed up, that packed up, it cost me this much” etc etc. Cars were made properly back in the 80’s, before failure was built in to the design. People really do now just get sucked in by the ‘face value’ ‘quality’ of modern cars, and how quick and powerful they are, and by a brand name that ‘used to’ mean luxury, but no longer actually does, then suddenly find something tiny has gone wrong and they are gonna have to part with a grand or so to sort it out. Il sick with my Rover P6 and save my money... and my car turns more heads than any modern euro box in front or behind it 😁

I dont know if you have failed the reading test or not. But there are a couple of points. Everyone knows that when you buy a Lexus it is built to last. There are many Lexus models out there are still on the street with well over 230 thousand miles and running perfectly well. Plus you have made a big mistake by buying Alfa because they are a terrible resale value.Yes I do buy my cars as a transport vehicles because I have a job and like to travel. So yes I want a reliable car not to look at it

What are D plates?
@jammy_rex3038
@jammy_rex3038 3 жыл бұрын
It refers to our car registration system as it was back then. "D" registration in the UK means the car was registered new in 1986/87

@@jammy_rex3038 and why is that desirable? Or at least spoken of in that manner.
@jammy_rex3038
@jammy_rex3038 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sapp440 it's just the lettering system that the UK used back then. Every August would see the new registration "letter". For example, 1984 cars had a registration beginning with the letter A (pre-August) or a B (post-August), 1985 with a B or a C, 1986 with a C or a D. 1987 with a D or an E. And so on. So this Jag on a "D" plate is the 1986/87 model year. And perhaps this particular model year was deemed less desirable as it was the first year of production, and build quality issues might not have been ironed out for example. Although your comment mentions it being more desirable, but it's a while since I watched the video.

Better than the series 3 !!! this point needs closer inspection . The 40 or series 4 dont look as nice, square headlights sitting awkwardly on a body that tries to be like its elder brother but doesnt , interior electronics that were obscolete before they packed up and that handbrake lever constanty digging in to drivers thigh .. and the facelifted model with the weird shaped bonnet to try and emulate s 3 but that didnt work and all subsequent x300 varients just couldnt recapture the magic .. What a tradegy . Jaguar should have stuck with the proper series 3 to this day .

I prefer a v12 though. have owned a few. ( old jags. horrid bastards lol) if I were to go v8 the ls1 and t56 is a GREAT combination, or the 4.3 v8 from a Maserati gransport. but the wiring = damn lol. racing seats?, not sure. if they blend in to the interior, maybe. then change models to something other than xj40. as long as its a jag, im happy

When we moved to California in 1994 when I was ten years old my parents bought a mint condition private party 1988 XJ6 and it was the very top level Vanden Plas model which was the cream of the crop it was black on tan leather with that beautiful real hand carved English burled walnut wood and course supple leather throughout, it had the big inline six under the hood, and was such a beautiful luxurious car in perfect condition but man that thing had the WORST electrical system on the planet which is so common of old Jags and many other true British cars (that one was before Ford bought out Jag so it was a real imported British Jag) lol! When I was in high school just before my folks sold it I used to sneak the keys and take it to go pick up my girlfriends and take them out and I told them it was mine LMAO! When I would return home my parents gave me a much deserved ass whooping but it was worth it hahaha! Ahh to be 15 and stupid again lol. But despite it's horrible electrical system that was certainly the most fancy luxurious car in the world and being the Vanden Plas model there was nothing higher than that trim level it had every single option on the list and it was a black beauty!

Suspension,...bulb failure modules,...air con system,..hyd pump,..water pump,...door locks,...window lifts,..seat adjusters,...electrical problems,..and the price for adjusting the valve clearances!!!,...prop shaft /drive line vibrations.....rear end crapping it's self,....the list was virtually endless .....
