Correction: In the episode, we said that photons are too small to get inside the Vantablack tubes, but photons don’t have a physical size. The reason Vantablack works is because the tubes are so long and closely spaced that any photons that fall in bounce around indefinitely, without being able to escape.

Nathaniel Brown they recently referenced this video in their latest, as they were researching production on the new video they probably referenced this one- and caught the error upon going back

@@nathanielbrown4904 True story: I saw the video in 2017 and thought the whole photon size thing was wierd, so i contacted Surrey Nano Systems (who makes Vantablack), and they told me the nano tubes are closed at both end, and there is nothing to do with the photon size. after the conversation with Surrey Nano Systems, i have sent an email to Scishow in 2018 (i think) regarding their mistake, but because they get tons of emails (assumably), it took them 2 years to reply. thats why this got corrected after so long.

He wouldnt even last one day. The same goes for people who are imprisoned in a complete white room. It was tested and they went insane.
@asherandai1000
@asherandai1000 7 жыл бұрын
+Reaper_V thats not entirely true. yes some people do go insane, but its due to isolation that they go insane, same thing that potentially could happen to astronauts which is why one of the principle tests for a would-be astronaut is how well they can handle isolation and sensory deprivation. if what you claimed was true then no one would ever be suitable as an astronaut. simply put some people could handle it, others could not.
@MonoReaper
@MonoReaper 7 жыл бұрын
The difference between astronauts and the white/black room is that your eyes cannot grasp what they see. So the information send to your brain makes for your brain no sense because you see no forms no nothing only the "room" you can only feel due your body parts. The reason why people go insane in such a room is because the cannot "see" anything therefore their imaginations goes wild so wild that they get panic attacks etc. or begin so see things because they see "nothing". Astronauts are not trapped in a room their "eyes" cannot "see". Such a thing was only tested with a white room and the people went badshit insane after a few hours they were scared and so on. The only guy who made it the longest was around 23:35hours & minutes. They black room with vantablack was never tested nor anything similar.
@muqarrab8736
@muqarrab8736 6 жыл бұрын
I can't understand how a vantablack room be different than a completely dark room (with no source of light). And i sleep that way, with not even a mobile charger LED on in the room. And i have not gone insane as far as i know, and i believe the same should go for a "white" room. But i also understand that many people can't stand a completely dark room alone, they get scared, so may be that's what you mean when you say that people will start to hallucinate.
@mushroomcube623
@mushroomcube623 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe our brains are simply used to complete darkness because we know we can't see when there's no light. A vantablack room would be different because there could be a light source, such as a lamp, but it would still look like complete darkness everywhere else. This sounds a lot like the ganzfeld effet (look it up).

I understand it, companies like Dupont spend hundreds of millions if not billions a year developing materials like this for commercial or industrial applications so they usually get some sort of copyright that usually has a time limit. Even basic things like nylon, rayon, and virtually all plastics started out as copyrighted products at first but after awhile they usually lose the copyright and other people get to make it. If you spend $50mil making a new extra bouncy rubber to make better tires, but all your competitors get the formula then what's your incentive for taking the risk? This is one of the reasons why in areas that dont protect intellectual properties or copyrights there's usually less innovation, and the innovation that is made is usually funded by the government... in which case the government retains sole ownership the same with that a private company would. If you dont want to produce it yourself and allow others to find uses for the new product then you can just allow them to produce it under license, you retain ownership but they have to pay you a prearranged amount. You actually see this alot then you'd expect, whenever you hear about a new vehicle or weapon produced in a country foreign to the one who designed it, they're allow it to be produced under license, this is often done to allow the other country to create jobs while still selling more of your vehicles then you could produce yourself.

I loved the idea! If it is used at night you can become invisible with this thing or scare many people! (They'll think you're a seeing a ghostly or a living shadow ) Can also be used as research material to create the perfect photovoltaic cell! And lastly, if this even absorbs all or almost all of the electromagnetic waves, and if it does not absorb can be perfected to absorb, it can leave a plane totally invisible!

I have not worked with Vantablack but have worked with other high absorbing surface treatments. The trick for high absorption materials is that they have a gradual change in refractive index as light penetrates the surface. If all the nanotubes were exactly the same length, it would be much more reflective. Instead, there is a nice even distribution of lengths so the light first hits the tallest nanotubes, then encounters more and more as it moves into the material. Light sees a gradual (smooth) refractive index change so it keeps on moving down deeper, never actually "seeing" an interface that would cause a reflection. Of course the nanotubes themselves interact directly with photons by absorbing and eventually converting the energy to heat.

Conducting heat and perceived temperature are two different things. The metal on your car on a sunny day is no hotter than a peace of wood, it just transfers the heat to your hand faster so it feels hotter. As far as the original comment, black already absorbs light and turns it to heat. And seeing as normal black paint absorbs like 95% of light and this absorbs 100, I imagine it would heat up about 5% faster than something painted a dark black.

By whitest you might mean the one who reflects the most light, then i'd say a mirror is the oposite of this :) A very very very very very very very very very polished mirror.

Covering yourself in vantablack would be a terrible way to hide. Even in the dead of night, you'd form a hard outline that would be easy to discern from your surroundings. Real ninjas didn't even wear black because it was too high contrast. They wore dark blue. Of course, if you just want to be anonymous, vantablack is perfect.

Ninjas didn't wear the costumes at all, they dressed like ordinary people, because their advantage was blending in, nothing stands out more than a dude in a dark costume.

Also, you'd probably be quite crunchy. ~400°C remember? Wearing clothing made of it? Would make you look surreal as hell, but not hide you very well. It's not really camouflage if you stand out because look like a hole in reality.

if we would make solar panels out of vantablack, would it be more efficient?

If it would transfer the absorbed energy to electricity instead of heat, then yes. But it doesn't.

Some use photoelectric chemistry to do the light-to-electricity trick. Others are thermoelectric, in which case this stuff would work vantastically well.

I don't think so. Maybe you could use its heat absorbing power to build some sort of steam engine. Like geothermal or nuclear energy.

Yeah my thoughts exactly. Not photovoltaic, the ones that heat water. Not sure if you have seen them dotted around on houses, they are the ones that look like a row of tubes.
@ShaunHusain
@ShaunHusain 8 жыл бұрын
there are solar collectors that focus light onto a dark liquid which is then used to boil water to turn a turbine so maybe useful in that way. there is also research in using similar nano tech in solar panels to absorb more wavelengths of light
@josephfox9221

CasMullac maybe water tubes could work. but would the transfer from light to heat to im guessing mechanical to electric be as cheap and as efficient as photo-voltaic? im sure in a few months we will see a study

why dont CNT's just burn away in such hot temperatures? do they do it in Argon, Nitrogen atmospheres or vacuum? if so wouldnt the blackness of the material vanish with time as it would oxidise as it heats up from the light.
@laimonassileika2285
@laimonassileika2285 6 жыл бұрын
CNT's is the answer you're looking for. The bond strength is hilariously high for this stuff, and in order to oxidise in any way the bonds have to be severed first. CNT's aren't Halagenoalkanes so Nucleophiles don't have any effect on them. So oxidisation can only occur via enthalpy change or ionization... hence the 705K temperature required to make it. Or the 1025K for NASA's version. But then, bonding with gasses would set the CNT's off like napalm. Probably not a fluorine fire, but close enough :)
