Orson Welles has the most magnificent voice! I love this reading it's brilliant.

This is actually one of the most profound (though rather obvious) questions you can ask about the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. It happens in one short sentence with very little explanation attached to it. Yet it is the crux of the tale, kind of like Lord Jim's jump. it's in the very heart of the narrative. some make the splendid point that this has to happen as a plot point but there's more than that, inevitability of failure and human decadence. it as if it makes no difference why and when.

I was checking wikipedia to look at albatross, and it says that mariners sometimes killed and ate them, and yet sometimes it was considered bad luck because they were thought to be souls of lost sailors. It could explain why Coleridge chose the albatross, because it was an already established symbol for mariners. I don't know if it's true, because, you know, wikipedia, but it has references.

Either way, in the poem it is a sin and the sailor receives penitence and guilt
