Dev Deepawali is a celebration of Lord Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura. The festival is especially significant in Varanasi, where devotees light thousands of oil lamps, or diyas, along the ghats, or steps, that lead to the Ganges River. The city's temples, including Kashi Vishwanath, are also a focal point of the festivities.
Other activities during Dev Deepawali include: Singing devotional hymns, performing aarti rituals, and decorating the city with rangolis.
Dev Deepawali is celebrated on the last day of Ganga Mahotsav, which begins on Prabodhini Ekadashi. It also coincides with Guru Nanak Jayanti and Jain Light Festival.
